  Prologue

The game wastes no time introducing its darker and edgier flavor as compared to the relatively lighthearted first in the series. We're treated to dramatically ominous music and a monstrous vertical eye, and then the thing speaks.

「.........not enough power.
 .........sacrifice to your god!
..................power!
Pray to your god! Worship your god!
Be your god's power.........
「‥‥‥, I don't have
enough strength
 ‥‥‥, Give yourself
to God
 Pray to God! Praise God!
You must become God's
strength ‥‥‥

Fortunately, that soon fades, to be replaced with a more customary, though monochrome, scene in a fairly ordinary church.

Though after that opening, maybe we should be suspicious of churches.

Regardless, a girl runs down the stairs and outside, followed by an aging man.

 Ganner
「Ah! Hey! Yua, wait!!
 Ganer
「Ah! Hey! Wait Yua!!

It seems a more likely name with two Ns, at least to me. The doubled consonant also fits the phonetics better, since it can't be read as "gainer".

 Ganner
「Yua! Take your nap!
.........oh dear, she's run off on me.
 Ganer
「Yua! Nap time!
 ‥‥‥ Oh, she got
away from me.

He calls up the stairs.

 Ganner
「Hey, {kidRyu}!
 Ganer
「Hey, {kidRyu}!

The text uses a different variable for Ryu's name during the prologue, perhaps due to referencing a different character slot, but it's the same name.

 Ganner
「{kidRyu}, come here a minute.
 Ganer
「{kidRyu}, come here for
a minute.

The scene changes to upstairs, where the player now controls the boy Ryu. Let's head downstairs before Ganner calls again.

At this point, I find that the GBA version has added some convenient features, including the always-welcome ability to dash so it doesn't take as long to get around, and the Quick Save function that has become fairly standard and especially helps when using a device that has to deal with limited battery life but doesn't have much risk of a sudden power outage. The menu and interface seem otherwise unchanged so far beyond necessary button remapping. Character portraits (and the title screen, for that matter) have been redrawn in a style similar to Breath of Fire IV's artwork. And the music quality is distinctly worse than in the SFC original, but you'd expect that from this generation of handheld systems, so I suppose I shouldn't complain too much.

 Ganner
「Yua's gone off somewhere again...
Does she not like to nap?
 {kidRyu}, go and find
Yua for me.
Yes / No
 Ganer
「Yua disappeared again‥
 I don't think she likes
naps.
 {kidRyu}
Please go find Yua.
Yes        No

Choose "Yes".

「よし、じゃあ頼んだぞ 「Good, I'm counting on you. 「Good.
I'm counting on you.

Choose "No".

「Fool! What if Yua is in danger!?
What good is a boy who
won't protect girls!?
「You fool!! What are you
going to do if Yua is in
danger!!?
 You should protect your
sister!!

Either way, Ryu has to go look for Yua.

「Is Yua going through a rebellious phase...?
Maybe it's because her mother's gone...
「I wonder if Yua is going
through a rebellious‥.
 phase, or if it's
because her mother
is gone‥

The usual RPG looting mindset applies perfectly well here. Search every dresser and set of shelves in every building in every town to find all sorts of things throughout the course of the game. For instance, Ryu has a Wood Rod for fishing stored in his room.

This is a small town, with only a few houses besides the church. A dragon statue, like the ones the first game used as save points, stands in the corner of town, but in addition to standing out in the open instead of being enshrined, the statue seems to be inert. Everyone knows Ryu, and both their words and the typically yellowish color of the Dragon's Tear (though everything else except occassional emphasized text remains greyscale) indicate that they're reasonably fond of him, even the elderly person he can interrupt in a private restroom.

「Hey! {kidRyu}! You little rascal!!
Don't go in other people's bathrooms!
「Hey! {kidRyu}!
You rascal!!
 You mustn't go into
other people's
bathrooms!

The game seems to have something of an obsession with toilets, perhaps as a reaction to how often games leave them out entirely.

Other villagers have more pertinent information to share.

「Ah, {kidRyu}.
Hm? Yua's gone?
Surely she hasn't left the village.
「Oh, {kidRyu}!
What? Yua disappeared?
 I hope she hasn't gone
outside of the village.
「Father Ganner... your dad, that is...
he's amazingly skilled with magic!
He really did a lot for us when our
village was attacked by monsters.
「Father Ganer‥ about
your father‥
He is a great magician!
 When this village was
attacked by the monster,
he was incredible!
「When this village was attacked by
monsters a few years ago, a large
dragon appeared and saved us...
 That dragon sleeps at the
mountain out back even now.
「Several years ago when a
monster attacked this
village,
 a huge dragon appeared
and saved the people‥
 That dragon is still
here, sleeping in the
back mountains.
2 「{kid
「{kidRyu}!
Aren't you lonely with your mother gone?
 .........oh, it's already been three
years since she passed on......
I guess you can't stay lonely forever!
You're a big brother, after all!!
「{kidRyu}!
You're not lonely
without your mother?
 ‥‥‥ Is that right?
 It's been three years
already since your
mother died‥‥
 I guess you can't cry
forever!
You're a big boy!!
4

(The Dragon's Tear turns greener with a positive sound at the end of the "can't stay lonely forever" line.)

「Isn't Yua always playing
by the mountain out back?
「Isn't Yua always playing
at the back mountain?

Searching the back of the village after hearing about Yua's likely destination reveals an overgrown field past a tuft of grass. The scene suddenly changes to full color as Ryu finds Yua in a clearing at the bottom of a cliff with an unmoving dragon draped over it. Judging by what looks like moss growing on it, the dragon has been here for quite some time, and its head and claws appear to cover openings in the cliff. However, the monster that jumps out and attacks Ryu proves a more urgent concern. He fights bravely, but is ultimately no match for it...

「{char1} look out

...so it's fortunate that Ganner followed him here and has no difficultly obliterating the monster with magic.

The combat system awards the experience points and money to Ryu. Both values are boosted in the GBA version. It turns out that most enemies in this version give double or even triple experience and Zeny. I'm sure some people won't like it, but with only so much time in the day, I, for one, don't mind less grinding. Unfortunately, drop rates don't seem to be any higher, so rare equipment could still take forever to get...

「あぶなかったな、{kidリュウ}
 Ganner
「That was a close one, {kidRyu}.
 Ganer
「That was dangerous,
wasn't it {kidRyu}?
 Ganner
「I see you fought to protect Yua.
That's commendable.
 Ganer
「You fought to protect
Yua. You are brave.
 Ganner
「Hey! Yua, you know you can't do this!
Why did you come to such a place!?
 Ganer
「You're a bad girl Yua!
Why did you come to a
place like this?!
 Yua
「'Spite 'cause I wanted to see mom!
 Ganner
「Your mother!?
 Yua
「'Spite yeah!
'Spite I can dream of mom
when I take a nap here!!
 Yua
「Because,I wanted to
see Mom!
 Ganer
「Your Mother!?
 Yua
「That's right!
If I take a nap here,
Mom comes into my
dreams!!

Yua consistently ends her sentences with an exaggerated のに (no ni), a particle combination that normally indicates constrast between two phrases, similar to "even though" or "despite". However, the way she draws out the sound and wildly overuses it suggests that she's latched onto it in a childish sort of way and simply likes the way it sounds, either not fully understanding the meaning or just not caring. While it does occassionally apply properly for some of her sentences (for instance, in the first line above it could express the opposition between his chiding her for coming here and her wanting to see her mother), more often than not it makes no grammatical sense. Given that, I thought it made sense to translate it as a mindless addition to the sentence (" 'spite ") that carries a hint of meaning but serves no real purpose. Also, remember this particular verbal tic for much later...

 Ganner
「.........your mother...
 Ganer
「‥‥‥ your Mother, huh

 Ganner
「But, Yua...
 Yua
「'Spite I know!!
'Spite mom's... dead!
 Ganer
「But Yua‥
 Yua
「I know!!
Mom ‥ is dead!

The GBA version switches the background to a picture of their mother at this point. She's quite pretty, with long blue hair and what look like angelic wings, but they're probably just an embellishment... or are they?

Ganner turns to Ryu as they leave.

Choose "No", and nothing happens. Choose "Yes", and Ryu sees a glimpse of the foreboding eye shown earlier. Either way, when Ryu returns to the village, things have changed dramatically. Ganner and Yua are nowhere to be found, and as for the other villagers...

The Evaist god won't forsake you.
「Are you‥ an orphan?
If you have nowhere to

 St. Eva will not turn

Unsurprisingly, going in the occupied bathroom is now met with open hostility.

「What are you thinking, going in

「How can you go into
someone else's bathroom.
What were you thinking!!
-3

(The Dragon's Tear turns a shade darker with an unpleasant sound at the end of the above line.)

The rest of the town is much the same. Let's try the church, then.

 Father Hulke
「Welcome to the house of the Evaist god...
Child, are you also without relatives?
You need not worry, however...
The church will not forsake pitiable
children such as yourself.........
Even if they may be pilferers...
Now, think of this as your own home
and rest as long as you like.........
 Father Hulk
「Young child, welcome to
the house of St. Eva
 You also have no family?
But, you have nothing
to fear‥
 The church will never
turn away a poor child
like you ‥‥‥
 Even if you were a
thief‥
 There, think of this as
your own home and rest
‥‥‥

...well, considering it IS his own home...

Having little choice, Ryu accepts the hospitality, such as it is. Later that night, another child resting there hops out of bed.

「Up and at 'em! 「Heave ho!

He has dog-like features, and proceeds to rummage through everything.

「Bah, what a lousy haul.
Might as well nab this candle.
「What a cheap place
I guess I'll take
the candles

Ryu confronts him.

You're like me, aren't you?
Playing the pitiful little kid so you
can get yourself into the church...
to help yourself to anything of value, right?
 But this place is broke...
guess only bigger towns are any good.
 I'm heading to another town.
You gonna stay here?
Yes / No
「‥Hi!
 You don't have to say

 You act like a poor

valuables you can find,
right?
 But this place is
worthless‥ We have to
go to a bigger village
 I'm going to another

 Are you going to stay
here?
Yes No

Choose "Yes".

「What... you're trying to say
pilfering's wrong?
「What‥. are you saying
that stealing is bad?

Orphans like us can't go on living
if we don't do something, right?
 .........even a god would
let taking a few things slide...
But if you don't wanna go, that's that.
Have fun with your boring life out in the
sticks praying to god or whatever! See ya!
 Orphans like us have to
do anything we can
to survive.
 ‥‥‥ God will forgive
us for such a small
thing like stealing‥
 But, if you don't want
to come,
I'm not going to insist.
 You can live in this
little village quietly
 and pray to God!
I'll see you around!

The kid leaves, but nothing else happens until Ryu approaches the stairs, at which point the other kid reappears.

「Ha ha!  I thought
you would!
 You don't want to stay

 Besides, bad guys like

a church, right

 My name is {kidBow}!
Nice to meet you, buddy!
 {kidBow} has joined our

Like Ryu, Bosch has a different variable for his name during the introduction, presumably for the same reason.

Either way, they leave together. The priest is dozing off downstairs.

「Zzz... zzz...
O god......... mumble mumble
「umm‥ umm‥
Dear God ‥‥‥ zzz

No one stops them as they leave the village, but Bosch halts not far outside.

 {kidボッシュ}

 {kidBosch}
「.........hm? Sniff, sniff. Uh-oh.
 Smells like rain.
 {kidBow}
「...... hum? sniff
sniff Oh no,
 it looks like rain

I know it's more an idiom than not, but seeing "looks" like rain after he's clearly scenting the air just doesn't feel right.

Sure enough, it starts pouring soon after.

 {kidボッシュ}
 {kidBosch}
「Whoa! Damn, it's here! A downpour!!
Can't we take shelter anywhere?
 {kidBow}
「Wow! Here comes the
rain! It's pouring!!
Can we find a place to
get out of the rain?

But he refuses to turn back...

 {kidボッシュ}
 {kidBosch}
「What use is going back to the village now!?
 {kidBow}
「What's the sense in
going back to
 the village!

I'm not really satisfied with this line. 今さら (ima sara) is one of those phrases that's difficult to translate cleanly. It does mean "now", but with a sense that things woul have been different before and it's too late to turn back at this point. In this case, I think, the idea isn't that they couldn't physically turn back and take shelter in the village, but that having already stolen a candle, snuck out, and made up their minds to go elsewhere, it doesn't feel like a viable option any more.

...so the uninviting cave up ahead will have to do.

 {kidボッシュ}
 {kidBosch}
「Hey, it's pitch-black...
 Oh! I know!
The candle from before... there!
 {kidBow}
「Hey, it's pitch black in
here..
 Oh! The candle!
I can use that candle..

Naturally, leaving is not an option...

 {kidボッシュ}
 {kidBosch}
「Hey, hey, where're you going?
It's pouring out there!
 {kidBow}
「Hey hey, where are you
going?
 It's pouring outside!

...so they continue inside by the faint light of the candle. Something resembling a huge scorpion tail slithers away ahead of them.

 {kidボッシュ}
 {kidBosch}
「.........what was that?
Let's go after it!
 {kidBow}
「...... What was that?
Let's follow it!

And he won't accept any other course of action...

 {kidボッシュ}
 {kidBosch}
「No, no! Not that way!
 {kidBow}
「No no!
That's not the way

...so really, he has no one but himself to blame when it stops and they come face-to-face with a large monster.

 {kidボッシュ}
 {kidBosch}
「A-ah! M-monster!!
 {kidBow}
「Oh
it's a monster!!

The monster swats Bosch aside with its tail. Ryu rushes forward, looks over in the direction Bosch was flung, then turns to face the beast. It speaks.

「......you mean you're it?
 You're the chosen one!?
...very well, then you can show me!!
「...... Are you saying
you are the one?
 You say that you are
the child
for the mission!?
 ..All right then prove
it to me!!

"Child for the mission" is also fine, and "child with a calling" or something similar would be, too... Meanwhile, I've decided to just go ahead and call him The Chosen One. In any case, highlighting just "child" and not the entire phrase completely misses the point.

Ryu and the monster バルバロイ enter combat.

Japanese Wikipedia tells me that バルバロイ is a rendition of the Greek word that Latin's "barbarus" and English's "barbarous" come from, so...

Barbarous levels Ryu in a single unfairly overpowered attack before he can even act (dodging is a rare possibility but only delays the inevitable).

「Go... {kidRyu}!
Open the gate... child of destiny...
And then... then you will know
the power of our god!!
「Go ahead.. {kidRyu}!
Let me see you open the
gate .. destined child
  and.. that is when you
will know the strength
of God!!

...and then we see the textover scenes that I started this page for in the first place...

The official English version of the following lines, though grammatical, has serious problems with getting the meaning right. The Japanese version displays the exact same English text, perhaps for flavor, along with the Japanese text, but accuracy was clearly not a priority, since they weren't writing for a fluent audience. It should never have appeared unedited in an English release, but Capcom bungled the localization rather badly overall, and this is just one of many issues. Honestly, it reads as though they gave a very rough translation to a native English speaker, who then rewrote it to sound good without knowing what it originally meant.

The English is also, in both the Japanese and English versions, displayed in a special all-caps font with a script look. The Japanese text, in the Japanese version, scrolls along the bottom of the screen and doesn't have line breaks as usual, so I've added some for readability.

The boy had dreamt a long dream.
His father and little sister were gone, and there were
none who remembered the boy.
IT WAS LIKE WAKING FROM A
LONG DREAM...
BUT, NOW HIS FATHER AND
SISTER HAVE DISAPPEARED AND
NO ONE ELSE RECOGNIZES
HIM...
And then . . . . .
a demon with a repulsive figure and evil powers
that rent the boy's mind asunder.
. . . . . all of it seemed like a long dream.
HE DREAMT OF A HORRIFIC
DEMON WHO RIPPED HIS HEART
AND BODY APART...
BUT IT REMAINS JUST A DREAM.

No, actually, it doesn't remain just a dream. It was just so unreal that it seemed like one. But it all happened, and that's kind of important.

We now see what appears to be a tall tower in a very dark region. Underground?

Before long, darkness falls upon him.
The boy drifting through the darkness in his heart saw
there another world once he came to awareness.
A world of silence, where stillness rules.
A world of deep night, where light falls not.
The boy sensed something terrible there,
and also something nostalgic.
YET, THE VISION REMAINS
STRONG.
DEEP WITHIN THE CORNERS OF
HIS MIND, HE HEARS IT
CALLING.
A DIFFERENT WORLD...
A WORLD OF SILENCE...
A WORLD OF DARKNESS.
HE MOVES TOWARD IT, FEELING
BOTH FEAR AND EXHILARATION.
HE SUCCUMBS AND THE DARKNESS
WELCOMES HIM.
"The chosen one"
Those words alone, words the demon had spoken,
lingered in the boy's mind ever after.
Those words alone told him that all of it had really
happened . . .
“ YOU ARE THE ONE ”
THE DEMON SCREECHES.
REACHING DEEP WITHIN HIS OWN
HEART,HE REALIZES THAT IT
IS TRUE.
THEN, IN THAT MOMENT,
REALITY WASHES AWAY AND THE
DREAM BEGINS TO TAKE
SHAPE...

Cut to title card. And then continue.

10 years later TEN YEARS LATER

The GBA version adds here a brief image of kid Ryu that fades out and is replaced by an image of grown Ryu.
