Breath of Fire II

Here's the magic list, sorted by the game's internal order, which has no discernable pattern to it. Extra information is wherever I think it belongs. I use the following shorthand throughout the page:


Effect Types

Breath of Fire II has the following damage traits:

(none) The default, especially for physical attacks. Inflicts half damage against Spirit enemies unless undefendable.
Fire Inflicts double damage against Undead and Icy enemies, but half damage against Spirit, Fiery, and Aquatic enemies.
Ice Inflicts double damage against Fiery enemies, but half damage against Spirit and Icy enemies.
Thunder Inflicts double damage against Aquatic enemies, but half damage against Spirit enemies.
Wind Inflicts double damage against Flying enemies, but half damage against Spirit enemies.
Holy Inflicts double damage against Spirit and Undead enemies.
Earth Inflicts no damage against Flying enemies, and half damage against Spirit enemies.

Note that only Spirit enemies (which resist nearly everything) resist Thunder or Wind damage, and that nothing resists Holy.

Player characters can resist Fire, Ice, Thunder, and/or Holy (even though no enemies use Holy attacks) by wearing appropriate equipment. The reduction is roughly 3/16 for one piece of equipment with resistance, 5/16 for two, and 7/16 for three.

The Breath of Fire series spell names aren't typically real words in any language, but most tend to resemble something meaningful, and related spells nearly always have similar names. Please refer to my Breath of Fire magic page for comments on possible name origins for spells that exist in both games.

Note that while the English version includes the codes for emphasizing parts of the descriptions, the parser ignores them in combat, so you'll only see the emphasis in the field menu. Combined with a shortage of proper spacing, this tends to make these particularly unsightly. At least this game has descriptions...

Also, for whatever reason, characters don't always learn spells at exactly the expected level, especially when multiple spells are set to the same level for the same character (only one can be learned per level up). This especially affects Dís, whose data has her gaining four spells in only two levels.

Spell damage

Any spell that inflicts standard magic damage has a base damage approximately equal to its listed power, with slight random variation. Target Wisdom can increase or decrease the damage somewhat (+16% to -24% against player characters and +16% to -12% against monsters). Caster statistics do not affect damage directly, but do affect the chance for player characters to get spell criticals (see below). Defending can further reduce defendable spell damage by 5%, 15%, 25%, or 35%, with higher Wisdom apparently increasing the chance of a better reduction, in addition to the usual Wisdom modifier.

According to Ben Siron's handbook, the exact damage modifiers based on target Wisdom are as shown below. The handbook also describes monster Wisdom indirectly using a derived value it calls "magic susceptibility" ("Ms" for short), equal to 4 - (Wisdom/32 rounded down). The table includes this for reference.

Physical skills use standard physical damage calculation.

Undefendable skills ignore all stats and just hurt, using any applicable elemental modifiers.

Spell accuracy

Most spells always hit, but many status-related spells may fail depending on monster Wisdom. This means, in short, that monsters with high Wisdom are both more resistant to their effects and more successful when casting them, while monsters with low Wisdom are both more vulnerable to their effects and less successful when casting them. Monsters with sufficiently high Wisdom become completely immune to these spells and will never fail when casting them, while monsters with sufficiently low Wisdom have little or no chance to either avoid them when targeted or get them to work when casting. Player character Wisdom has no effect.

Using the magic susceptibility notation explained above, Ben Siron's handbook notes specifically that Worss (Death) works invariably against Ms +3 or +4 enemies, occasionally against Ms -2 enemies, and never against Ms -3 enemies. Similarly, an Ms -3 enemy casting Worss always succeeds unless the target is outright immune.

Spell criticals

When a player character casts a normal offensive spell, it has a chance to inflict 50% bonus damage (Ben Siron's handbook calls this a "well cast" spell). Whether a spell criticals or not seems to be a function of Wisdom, Guts, and Condition (higher is better, naturally). Terrain and whether any enemy is weak against the damage type may also influence the probability. Wearing a Skull Bracelet (SkullBR) sets the chance to 50%, which is also the maximum possible rate.

When invoking a spell from an item, the spell will either always critical or never critical, depending on the item.

Immunity

Some enemies have magic immunity, which causes normal offensive spells to inflict zero damage to them. This does not protect them from spells with effects other than damage, or from special spells like dragon transformations or the Shred (Chopchop) skill. It additionally does not work against spells invoked from items.

Certain pieces of equipment give player characters an imperfect version of this, popularly known as "partial immunity". Whenever an enemy uses a spell that immunity can affect, it randomly either will have its normal effect, or will fail to inflict damage against all player characters who have partial immunity.

All dragon transformation spells consume all of Ryu's remaining AP and inflict undefendable damage proportional to (current AP / max AP) squared. This means their effectiveness drops off sharply when Ryu does not cast from full AP. Here's a chart to summarize:

Though all dragon transformation spells use the same unhelpful generic description, they also have proper descriptions lurking in the game text. It's anyone's guess why these go unused. A simple oversight? Length restrictions?

Technical Information

Basic magic data is found starting at offset 0x0586F0 in the English ROM, and offset 0x0584F0 in the Japanese ROM. Extended data such as the specific effects of each spell are not stored here and are presumably scripted elsewhere. The data is organized as follows:

Name (bytes 0 to 7)

The spell's displayed name, using the same character encoding as the rest of the game. This is the name that appears in menus, not necessarily the text that appears when casting.

AP Cost (bytes 8 and 9)

The casting cost of this spell. Nothing comes anywhere close to needing the second byte, though.

Description Reference (byte 10)

Acts as a pointer to the description that appears in the menus.

Flags (byte 11)

Element (byte 12)

The type of damage this spell causes. The values in use are:

I would assume that anything with no recognized bits set (such as 0x00 and 0x20) would also function as non-elemental, and that the use of 0x80 is arbitrary. I'm not sure what would happen if you set multiple bits for the same spell. I ought to test that...

It's also possible for something to override these, since the Fire, Ice, and Thunder Dragon spells are all flagged as the appropriate element, yet inflict damage as non-elemental attacks.

When byte 14 bit 7 is set, characters must have at least this much Mood to use the spell. This is 0x00 for nearly everything, but it's 0xAF for Valhalla and Domega, 0xC8 for Leefrest, and 0xFA for Revalra. This byte appears to have no effect when byte 14 bit 7 is not set.

Spell learning tables

Which spells are learned at what levels are determined by a table starting at offset 0x05AC12 in the English ROM, and offset 0x05AA12 in the Japanese ROM. This data is formatted as simple two-byte pairs representing level and spell ID, with 0x00 delimiters between the data for each character.
