Character classes, commands, and attempted translations from...

Final Fantasy IV

Commands renamed to "Dummy" in the English release retain their original names in the EasyType, though most were removed from both versions.

Character attributes (other than HP and MP) follow a set progression from starting level up to level 70. After level 70, the change in attributes with each level (again, except for HP and MP) selects randomly for each level from a list of eight possible class-specific outcomes. While they still tend to increase on average, for any given level, a character's attributes may stay exactly the same or even decrease.

You can force desired results above level 70 by saving before a character levels and loading if you don't like the change. Much patience may be required.

In the DS remake, gains after level 70 are instead determined by which abilities are set, which means that maxing stats depends far more on planning and on an effective distribution of augments. Entire guides have been written about this.

For the level 99 tables, "Average stats" refers to the character's most average stats at level 99 (based on each outcome happening with equal frequency). "Best stat total" shows one possible level 99 outcome, chosen to maximize the quantity (str + agi + stm + int + spr), and may not necessarily be the most desirable in practice depending on personal preference. "Worst stat total" shows another possible level 99 outcome, this one chosen to minimize the same sum. Where multiple possible outcomes have the same totals, I picked an average one.

Common Commands
たたかう Battle Fight

Attack with equipped weapon or weapons, if any. All classes have this as their first command.

アイテム Items Item

Use an item. Also used to activate spells on weapons that have them. All classes have this as their last command.

チェンジ Change Change

Off the left side of the battle menu. Use to reverse the party's rows. The back row is a more defensive position.

ぼうぎょ Defend Parry

Off the right side of the battle menu. Defend until next command input.

Defending characters have doubled defense power. This usually reduces damage taken by more than half.

あんこくきし Dark Knight DKnight

暗黒騎士 (ankoku kishi) in kanji.

Characters
セシル Cecil Cecil

Pronounced with a short 'e' and soft 'c's. Pretend it's spelled more like "Sessil" if that helps. And they got this right in the DS remake. Huh.

Command List
あんこく Darkness Dummy

Sacrifice HP equal to 1/8 of maximum (rounded down) to deal defense-ignoring damage all enemies. This CAN incapacitate Cecil, so be careful.

Damage = [Attack * HitX * 1/2], plus a random factor from 0 to either 255 or half the calculated quantity, whichever is less. The net result roughly equals half attack damage, except that it ignores defense and evade. Although this damage is non-elemental, it includes racial checks that reduce the damage to 25% against Undead targets and none at all against Slimes. Cecil must have a weapon equipped to use Darkness, and cannot use it when under Toad, Minikin, or Pig status.

This command is removed in the English version, but unlike every other such command, Darkness remains present in the EasyType.

In the DS remake, Darkness instead activates a temporarily buff that doubles attack strength (by adding enough Dark damage to match the basic attack), at the cost of sacrificing HP equal to 1/10 of maximum per attack.

He's a mediocre fighter and nothing else, and his stats reflect that. His HP in particualr is poor for someone who isn't a mage, and while he has some good potential for other physical stats at high levels, you'll never realistically see them. The Darkness command and Deathbringer sword are really the only things that make Dark Knight Cecil in any way interesting.

りゅうきし Wyrmknight Dragoon

竜騎士 (ryuu kishi) in kanji. A Wyrmknight (adapted from the plain literal translation "dragon knight") has nothing whatsoever to do with dragoons except that dragoons happen to be named after a firearm with a French name meaning "dragon". Going by Wikipedia, a dragoon originally referred to a soldier intended to deploy by horse and fight on foot, but the modern usage refers to mounted regiments, usually ceremonial rather than functional in nature.

Characters
カイン Cain Kain

Though the Japanese indicates a hard 'c' sound and English long 'i', perhaps as if spelled "Kyne", there are numerous indications (including a Lance of Abel in some remakes) that the name is intended as a reference to the Cain of the Book of Genesis. As such, it ought to be pronounced like "cane" (hard 'c' and English long 'a') in English, per the standard pronunciation of the name.

Command List
ジャンプ Jump Jump

Leap into the air to land on one enemy after a delay for bonus damage.

Acts as a normal attack with doubled attack power that ignores row, and also adds (level / 4) to hit rate, but can't get critical hits. The jump completes more quickly with higher agility. Cain counts as not present when in the air—he can't be targeted, physical attacks that were targeting him hit someone else instead, single-target spells that were targeting him miss, and multi-target spells act as though he was never there to begin with. Cain cannot Jump when under Toad or Minikin status.

Jump feels like it takes considerably longer to land in the DS remake.

Solid growth, with decent intelligence and remarkably high spirit for someone who doesn't have the least bit of magic. While they don't do him any good on offense or for healing, they're still good for a solid edge in magic defense compared to characters like Yang and Cid, and the spirit also cuts down the duration of certain status effects.

The game data includes an unused and empty White Magic list that, based on its position, should belong to Cain. He also has an unused chanting animation, and furthermore, an early screenshot outright shows him with a White Magic command. While he never got any spells in an official release until the After Years, I think it's safe to say that the idea of it played a large part in giving him a spirit stat nearly as high as Paladin Cecil's.

しょうかんし Summoner Caller

召喚士 (shoukanshi) in kanji. The game has two Summoner classes internally, one for child Rydia and one for adult Rydia. This is the child version.

Characters
リディア Rydia Rydia

"Lydia" may have been the intended spelling, after an ancient kingdom in modern-day Turkey, but "Rydia" works remarkably well as a name.

Command List
しろまほう White Magic White

Use White Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Young Rydia learns the following spells at the indicated levels:

03  ● Cure 04  ● Sightro 07  ● Hold

White Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad and Pig status also disable the command during battle and all spells except Esuna in the field.

In the DS remake, Rydia also learns Confuse, Esuna, Cura, and Raise.

くろまほう Black Magic Black

Use Black Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Rydia learns the following spells at the indicated levels:

02  ○ Blizzard 13  ○ Toad 26  ○ Bio (44) 47  ○ Quake
*  ○ Fire 15  ○ Stop (31) 32  ○ Aspir (46) 49  ○ Break
05  ○ Thunder 20  ○ Porky (35) 36  ○ Drain (48) 51  ○ Tornado
08  ○ Sleepel **  ○ Blizzara (38) 39  ○ Blizzaga (49) 52  ○ Death
10  ○ Poison **  ○ Fira (40) 42  ○ Figa (50) 55  ○ Flare
12  ○ Dejon **  ○ Thundara (42) 45  ○ Thundaga 60  ○ Meteor

Levels in parentheses apply to the English and EasyType versions.

* Learned in an event at Hobs Mountain.

** Learned automatically as an adult, listed here only for completeness.

Black Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad status also disables all spells except Toad, and Pig status disables all spells except Porky.

In the DS remake, Rydia reportedly cannot learn any further Black Magic after Bio as a child.

しょうかん Summon Call

Use Summon magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Rydia learns the following summons in the indicated ways:

adult  ◎ Shiva beat  ◎ Leviathan item  ◎ Goblin
always  ◎ Chocobo adult  ◎ Ifrit beat  ◎ Asura item  ◎ Bomb
adult  ◎ Ramuh beat  ◎ Odin * item  ◎ Cockatrice
quest  ◎ Sylph adult  ◎ Dragon beat  ◎ Bahamut item  ◎ Mindflayer
adult  ◎ Titan

Always: Already learned when she joins the party.

Adult: Learned automatically as an adult, listed here only for completeness.

Beat: To learn this Summon, you must find, challenge, and defeat the creature summoned.

Quest: Involves a sidequest.

Item: Learned by using the corresponding item, rarely won in battle from certain monsters of its type.

* Nothing drops the Cockatrice item in the English and EasyType versions, though the summon still technically exists.

In the DS remake, Rydia can also summon Whyt (called ポーチカ in Japan, apparently from Russian почка (pochka), meaning "flower bud") to fight in her place for several turns.

Rydia cannot use Summon when under Toad, Pig, or Silence status.

Rydia's good growth potential beyond level 70 makes it possible for her to max out four of her five stats, something few characters can manage. Stamina lags somewhat, but she'll usually be in the back row anyway, attacking with whips or spells so the range penalty doesn't affect her.

けんじゃ Sage Sage

賢者 (kenja) in kanji. Functionally similar to the recurring Red Mage (not found in this game), except for the complete lack of any physical prowess.

Characters
テラ Tella Tellah

The original spelling has no 'h'. Possibly it was added to make the name look less feminine.

Command List
しろまほう White Magic White

Use White Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Tella begins with a few and learns more in an event at Ordeal Mountain later:

always  ● Cura event  ● Cure event  ● Silence event  ● Haste
always  ● Confuse event  ● Sightro event  ● Berserk event  ● Levitate
always  ● Blink event  ● Hold * event  ● Shell event  ● Reflect

always  ● Raise event  ● Slow event  ● Minimum event  ● Araise
always  ● Teleport * event  ● Protect * event  ● Dispel

* Only learned in the original version, not in the English or EasyType.

Tella never learns Holy.

White Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad and Pig status also disable the command during battle and all spells except Esuna in the field.

In the DS remake, Tella also starts with Silence.

くろまほう Black Magic Black

Use Black Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Tella begins with a few and learns more in an event at Ordeal Mountain later:

always  ○ Fire event  ○ Sleepel event  ○ Fira event  ○ Thundaga
always  ○ Blizzard event  ○ Poison event  ○ Thundara event  ○ Break
always  ○ Thunder event  ○ Dejon event  ○ Bio event  ○ Tornado
always  ○ Stop event  ○ Toad event  ○ Drain event  ○ Meteor
always  ○ Aspir event  ○ Porky event  ○ Blizzaga
event  ○ Blizzara event  ○ Figa

Tella never learns Quake, Death, or Flare.

Although Tella learns Meteor, he can't normally use it since it costs 99 MP and his maximum of 90 never increases no matter how high his level goes.

Black Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad status also disables all spells except Toad, and Pig status disables all spells except Porky.

In the DS remake, Tella also starts with Sleepel and Poison; however, he never learns Stop, for whatever reason.

おもいだす Remember Dummy

Casts a randomly-selected spell against all enemies, consuming the normal MP cost. The spell will fail if, at the time he attempts to cast it, Tella has Silence status or lacks sufficient MP. He also has a one in five chance of failing to remember any spell at all.

Tella cannot use the Remember command when under Toad, Pig, or Silence status.

According to Deathlike2's Algorithm FAQ, the odds are as follows: Break 5%, Bio 5%, Tornado 5%, Death 5%, Fire 15%, Blizzard 15%, Thunder 15%, Toad 15%, and a 20% chance to fail outright. The outcome functions like casting the spell normally, except for targeting (but enemies don't react to it as magic).

Note that even when Tornado or Death is selected, this still targets all enemies, normally impossible for these spells! This is also the only way for Tella to cast Death, since he never actually learns it... which makes you wonder how he manages to cast it here at all, let alone defy the normal targeting rules.

The event that gives Tella the majority of his final spell list also permanently removes this command.

This command is removed entirely in the English and EasyType versions.

The DS remake reportedly changes the spell list to Bubble 3%, Faith 3%, Bravery 3%, Figa 4%, Blizzaga 4%, Thundaga 4%, Fira 6%, Blizzara 6%, Thundara 6%, Fire 10%, Blizzard 10%, Thunder 10%, and Toad 31%. Bubble, Faith, and Bravery are new spells and otherwise only available through Pair Cast. Presumably because of these special spells that can't be learned normally, he keeps this command even after the event in the DS remake.

There are some lines in the combat messages that seem related to this command, but they appear to go unused.

おもいだした! I've remembered! D
ちがう これじゃない No, this isn't it. D
むー なにもおもいだせん Mh, can't remember anything. D

Curiously, the EasyType modifies two of them, removing the exclamation point from the first but adding !? after ちがう in the second.

In case it wasn't obvious, Tella's stat growth is simply awful. He seems fairly strong only because he starts out quite a few levels ahead of the other characters, then learns most spells long before anyone else. Despite that, he still gets less impressive the longer you have him. It's even possible for all his stats to drop to 1 by level 99!

In the DS remake, there are a few ways to legitimately increase Tella's MP over 90. Aside from raising him past level 70 with an ability set that causes MP growth, it's also possible to give him Soma Drops or an MP +50% augment carried across playthroughs. None of these are likely to happen if not done deliberately. More importantly, though, he's given much better stats, so his spells have more oomph behind them than merely being available sooner than usual.

おうぞく Royalty Bard

王族 (ouzoku) in kanji. While he may act as a minstrel in combat, he's still a prince, not just a spoony bard.

Characters
ギルバート Gilbert Edward

Various Japanese source materials support both "Gilbert" and "Gilbart" as spellings, and I've chosen the one that looks less unnatural to me. I'll admit that "Gilbert" isn't the most common name, but then, he's not a commoner. How did that turn into "Edward"?

There's more, though. The novel Anne of Green Gables includes, besides the title character Anne Shirley, a rival and later friend by the name of Gilbert Blythe. The Anna of FF4, who is Gilbert's lover, is the only significant character in the game that I can recall having red hair, which is a distinctive trait of Anne Shirley—the novel is even called 「赤毛のアン」, literally "Anne the Redhead", in Japan. It seems likely that there's a connection, even if her name isn't quite the same.

Command List
うたう Sing Sing

Sings a song. Requires a 2-handed weapon equipped (i.e., a harp). Each result (other than failure) mimics a normal spell.

Normally, this has a 25% chance each of ちんもくのうた (Silence Song = ●Silence), ゆうわくのうた (Alluring Song = ●Confuse), こもりうた (Lullaby = ○Sleepel), or doing nothing at all. When the user is under Toad status, it will instead always result in かえるのうた (Toad Song = ○Toad). Success rate is calculated as for the spells.

When the song that does nothing is selected, the following message displays:

こうかが なかった It had no effect. Nothing happened.

Another line in the combat messages looks like it was meant for trying to Sing when under Silence status. However, the command is unselectable in this situation, and no special message appears if the status is applied after entering the command but before it executes.

こえが でない Lost voice. Miss!

In the DS remake, Sing (Bardsong) works more like in FFV, being selectable from a menu. More songs are learned with additional levels, and every one that I've seen targets all enemies (or allies, for healing or enhancement songs). The one that regenerates health until he gets hit seems almost unfairly effective.

くすり Medicine Dummy

Uses one Potion to heal each party member 12~19 HP. Fails with no Potions available. And no, substituting a stronger type of potion is not an option.

There seems to be an off-by-one error in the coding of this command. If you have exactly one Potion, the command fails, but the Potion is consumed anyway. Apparently, the game consumes the Potion first, and only after that checks whether you have any for the effect to work.

Stranger still, the empty slot left by removing this command can cause another peculiar bug in the English version (and likely also in the EasyType). Use Hide and then Show, and the blank slot will be selectable as a command, but since it isn't actually one, inputting it leaves him stuck doing nothing until combat ends.

When the command fails, the following message appears:

くすりが たりない Not enough medicine. D

This dubious command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

In the DS remake, Medicine (Salve) takes your choice of item and uses several at once, one per character, at full strength.

かくれる Hide Hide

Activates Hiding. Gilbert is invulnerable while Hiding, but cannot take any actions except Defend, Change, and Appear (and running away).

Like when Cain is in the middle of a Jump, Hiding Gilbert can't be targeted, physical attacks that were targeting him hit someone else instead, single-target spells that were targeting him miss, and multi-targeted spells act as though he was never there to begin with.

Gilbert will automatically use Hide when his HP drops to critical levels (25% or below), unless he is uncontrollable (Sleep, Berserk, etc.), any opponent is flagged as a boss, or he's the only surviving character. However, any queued command will take place first.

Automatic Hiding has some oddities. You can still use Appear, but Gilbert will just automatically Hide again as soon as he can. More unusual, though, is his behavior when all other party members are dead. This will cancel Hiding (by automatically Appearing), but only if Gilbert's HP is critical. As long as he has high HP, he can keep on Hiding forever. Quite odd, but it's a good opportunity to flee combat, assuming the battle doesn't forbid it.

あらわれる Appear Show

Replaces the Hide command while Hiding. Cancels Hiding status.

Though he lacks useful abilities, Gilbert at least crushes Tella when it comes to stats. Exceptionally high growth potential after level 70 gives him the highest possible totals of any character, even maxing out up to four of his five stats, though you'd need to sacrifice two agility for that extra one stamina.

Use White Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Rosa learns the following spells at the indicated levels:

always  ● Cure (*) 12  ● Protect 23  ● Blink (30) 33  ● Haste
always  ● Hold 13  ● Cura 24  ● Confuse (32) 35  ● Levitate
always  ● Library 15  ● Silence (*) 29  ● Shell (34) 36  ● Reflect
always  ● Slow 18  ● Esuna (28) 30  ● Cureda 38  ● Curega
always  ● Sightro 20  ● Berserk (29) 30  ● Minimum (42) 45  ● Araise
11  ● Raise **  ● Teleport (*) 31  ● Dispel (48) 55  ● Holy

Levels in parentheses apply to the English and EasyType versions.

* Only learned in the original version, not in the English or EasyType.

** Automatically learned upon rejoining the party in the Tower of Zot.

White Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad and Pig status also disable the command during battle and all spells except Esuna in the field.

いのり Prayer Dummy

50-50 chance of either casting ●Cure on all allies at no MP cost or doing nothing. This can be Reflected, and the spell fails when under Silence status.

Note that Rosa can still use Prayer when under Silence status, it just won't do anything except waste her turn unless she's cured before taking action.

The following message appears when the command decides to do nothing:

いのりは てんに とどかなかった The prayer didn't reach the heavens. D

This command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

In the DS remake, Prayer (Pray) fails far less often. It also heals HP as a percentage of maximum instead of as a set amount, meaning that it scales up as the party grows stronger, and it additionally recovers a small percentage of maximum MP, which almost feels like cheating.

ねらう Aim Aim

A slightly slower normal attack that treats the user's hit rate as 255 and the target's evasion as 0. Only usable when equipped with a bow and arrows.

Monsters don't react to this as a physical attack, oddly enough. In any case, Rosa can't use Aim when under Toad, Minikin, or Pig status.

Unfortunately, Rosa lacks any really good level-up possibilities past level 70, so that limits her potential. On the other hand, even her bad ones aren't very bad, so at least she gets a solid average. Even at the very worst, she'll never lose any agility or spirit, probably her two most important stats.

モンクそう Monk Karate

モンク僧 (MONKU sou) with kanji. The class, of course, references the fighter-monk skilled in martial arts, not the cloistered scholarly type.

Characters
ヤン Yang Yang
Command List
ためる Charge Dummy

Builds up energy to strike one enemy after a delay for bonus damage.

Acts as a normal attack with doubled attack power, and also adds (level / 4) to hit rate. The charge completes more quickly with higher agility. While charging, physical and magical defense are halved. Charge is comparable to Jump except that the user is vulnerable while preparing to strike. However, it can get critical hits, which Jump cannot. Yang cannot use Charge when under Toad, Minikin, Pig, or Poison status.

When Yang begins charging up, the following message displays:

ちからをためて こうげきりょく 2ばい! Charging strength; attack power doubles! D

This command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

In the DS remake, Charge (Focus) instead activates a buff that boosts the user's next attack, and up to three uses stack for increasing bonus damage.

けり Kick Kick

Damages all enemies at reduced power.

Damage = [(attack / 2) - defense] * HitX, plus a random factor up to either 255 or half the calculated quantity, whichever is less. The net result is roughly equivalent to attacking each enemy with halved attack power. Slimes take no damage. Yang cannot use Kick when under Toad, Minikin, Pig, or Levitate status.

In the DS remake, Kick feels far stronger, though that's at least partly because it doesn't get a penalty against enemies in the back row. It also takes on any damage traits and status effects from weapons, instead of always inflicting non-elemental damage, and can benefit from Charge (Focus).

がまん Endure Dummy

Casts ●Protect on the user at no MP cost (+5 defense until end of combat). This can miss or be Reflected, and will fail under Silence status.

When Yang uses Endure, the following message displays, even when the skill has no effect:

ぼうぎょりょく アップ Defense power up. D

Only when the animation displays does the skill actually work. With Yang's low spirit, it has approximately a 1 in 3 chance to fail. Additionally, Yang cannot use Endure when under Toad, Minikin, or Pig status, and although he can use it under Silence status, as noted above it won't have any effect then.

This command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

In the DS remake, Endure (Brace) essentially functions as an enhanced Defend command, reducing all damage taken by 75% until the user's next action.

In an apparent oversight, Yang simply stops gaining HP after level 60. If it kept increasing, he would invariably reach 9999 maximum HP before level 90, even using pessimistic estimates. His strength and stamina excel even before level 70, averaging more than a full point of gain per level, and tend to keep soaring after it as well.

Black Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad status also disables all spells except Toad, and Pig status disables all spells except Porky.

ふたりがけ Pair Cast Twin

This doesn't translate cleanly. ふたり (futari, 二人 in kanji) means two people, so that much is simple enough. がけ (gake), though, comes from the verb かける (kakeru), which has such a wide range of meanings that it's hardly any help at all. With no context, ふたりがけ might be an adjective for something that seats two people, but that makes no sense here. However, one possible sense of かける is to cast a spell, as in the phrase 魔法をかける, and that seems to fit perfectly.

Synchronizes with Porom to cast Minimeteor (64/256 chance) or Miniflare (191/256 chance) against all enemies. Slight (1/256) chance to fail.

Miniflare is 50% stronger and costs 10 MP, while Minimeteor (20 MP) inflicts full damage against multiple targets and also ignores Reflect. Casting takes less time the more agility the twins have {in total?}. Effectiveness depends on the intelligence score of whichever twin is closer to the first character slot (the one that appears first on saved games—from top to bottom on the menu and battle screen, the slots are numbered 2, 4, 1, 5, 3), so always put Palom ahead of Porom.

If either twin is rendered unable to cast while the joint spell is charging, the spell fails.

There's a line in the combat messages that seems intended for this, but it appears to go unused.

シンクロが みだれた Synchronization disrupted. Failed.

In the DS remake, both characters must select the command, presumably because the augment system means any two characters can cast spells together. Otherwise, it seems to work similarly, except that certain pairings can reportedly cast additional spells not previously available.

つよがる Bravado Dummy

Although つよがる is gramatically a verb, "bravado" fits the meaning too well to pass up.

Adds 16 to the user's effective intelligence for the remainder of the battle, repeatable up to 99 total intelligence. Great against bosses.

Palom cannot use Bravado when under Toad, Minikin, or Pig status.

When used, the following message displays:

まほうのちから アップ! Magic power up! D

This uncommonly useful command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

Curiously, despite removing the command, the EasyType changes the displayed message to へへーんだ, a cocky laughing sound.

In the DS remake, this instead doubles intelligence for the next spell only, making it sort of a magical equivalent to Yang's Charge (Focus).

White Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad and Pig status also disable the command during battle and all spells except Esuna in the field.

ふたりがけ Pair Cast Twin

Synchronizes with Palom to cast Minimeteor (64/256 chance) or Miniflare (191/256 chance) against all enemies. Slight (1/256) chance to fail.

Same as Palom's command, above. Refer to the notes there for details.

うそなき Feigned Tears Dummy

Lowers a certain enemy stat that was long believed to affect the difficulty of running away (largely because that's what the game manual says the command does!). However, more recent research indicates that it's actually related to how difficult enemies are to steal from (especially strange since you never have both commands available at the same time), and doesn't seem to have anything to do with running away at all. Shingo Endo, creator of the ff_analyzer program, agrees. It also has some influence over how often Poison status inflicts damage and affects the timers for Sleep, Paralysis, and Gradual Petrification, apparently? Weird. Anyway, thanks to S34n 4e for calling my attention to this!

The base value of the affected stat for enemies is monster level + 10, so presumably the idea was to lower the enemy's effective level, possibly with the intent of making it easier to run away. However, level only rarely has any direct impact on anything in this game, unlike FFV and FFVI, so it's only Steal success and a few oddball status-related timers that are affected. Incidentally, the reduction is half the user's value for the same stat, which for player characters is their initial level, so Porom using Feigned Tears lowers this stat for all enemies by 10/2=5. Also, this reduction is stackable to a minimum value of 1, for what it's worth.

Porom cannot use Feigned Tears when under Toad, Minikin, or Pig status.

When used, the following message displays:

まものを あわてさせた Flustered the monsters. D

This largely useless command is removed in the English and EasyType versions.

Curiously, despite removing the command, the EasyType changes the displayed message to びええええーん, an exaggerated blubbering sound.

In the DS remake, this instead lowers the defense of all enemies, making it drastically more useful.

パラディン Paladin Paladin

Characters
セシル Cecil Cecil
Command List
しろまほう White Magic White

Use White Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Paladin Cecil learns the following spells at the indicated levels:

01  ● Cure 03  ● Sightro 08  ● Library
15  ● Cura 19  ● Teleport 24  ● Esuna

In the DS remake, Cecil also learns Protect, Shell, and Raise.

White Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad and Pig status also disable the command during battle and all spells except Esuna in the field.

かばう Cover Cover

Cecil will intercept physical attacks directed at the selected ally and take the damage himself.

Cecil's row, stats, and status are used to determine damage, not the target's. He will not intercept damage while Defending, uncontrollable (due to status effects such as Sleep, Confusion, etc.), or in critical condition (25% HP or less). Characters being attacked by themselves or other characters are also exempt.

Cecil will also automatically intercept physical attacks directed against any characters who are in critical condition (25% HP or less), unless one of the above conditions prevents him from doing so.

Cecil cannot use the Cover command when under Toad or Minikin status. However, these do not stop him from intercepting enemy attacks, either automatically due to an ally at low health or because he already activated Cover earlier in the battle. Be careful, since he'll take vastly increased damage then.

かばわない Don't Cover Off

Replaces the Cover command when it is active. Cancels a previously activated Cover. Has no effect on automatic Covering.

Sluggish growth in Paladin Cecil's early levels may be an intentional effort to offset how quickly he gains these levels. Other than a roughly equal agility, Paladin Cecil's stats easily exceed Dark Knight Cecil's, especially HP and spirit. High level 70 stats plus decent growth potential beyond 70 let him max out every stat but intelligence, which is the least useful one for him anyway.

On the other hand, boosting Cecil's agility isn't necessarily the best thing. Speedrunners have found that the battle timing uses Cecil's agility as a basis (or the agility of the character closest to the lead slot if Cecil isn't in the party), so the higher it is, the more quickly things happen—enemy actions in particular.

Actually, I seem to have misread whatever my source for that was—experimentation suggests that the faster Cecil is, the slower combat moves. Effectively, the game appears to treat his agility as a baseline, so that his turn takes the same amount of time to come up regardless, and then scales everything else relative to that. In other words, doubling his speed doesn't halve the time between his turns, but instead doubles the time between everyone else's turns. Although that's probably worse from a speedrunning perspective, it shouldn't be a problem for anyone less concerned about minimizing total play time.

ぎし Engineer Chief

技師 (gishi) in kanji.

Characters
シド Cid Cid
Command List
しらべる Examine Peep

Works like the Library spell, minus the MP cost. Shows the current/maximum HP and weaknesses of a non-boss enemy.

Cid cannot use Examine when under the Toad, Minikin, or Pig status effect.

In the DS remake, this command scans all enemies at once. Since only one enemy of each type needs to be scanned to reveal their data for the rest of the game, it would be much less useful otherwise. Also, both spell and command can now scan most bosses, though HP won't normally display for them.

ひくうてい Airship Dummy

Unused in any version, but the name appears with the other commands, and the command itself is configured to target all enemies. Presumably meant to be an airstrike. Hacking it into a command list works fine, as long as you never try to use it... doing so crashes the game.

The DS remake instead gives Cid a command called Upgrade (in Japanese, かいぞう (kaizou), which roughly translates to "remodel"). This consumes an attack item (such as a Bomb Fragment or an Arctic Wind) to imbue the user's weapon with the item's element for the current battle.

Thanks to Yang's HP growth oddity, Cid is the only character who can reach 9999 HP without help from items that boost max HP. Other than that, he's an unremarkable fighter type statwise.

しょうかんし Summoner Caller

召喚士 (shoukanshi) in kanji. The game has two Summoner classes, one for child Rydia and one for adult Rydia. This is the adult version. The practical differences are that the adult version lacks the White Magic command and can't use White Mage equipment, but can use the Power Wrist and Giant's Bracer.

Characters
リディア Rydia Rydia
Command List
くろまほう Black Magic Black

Use Black Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Rydia learns the following spells at the indicated levels:

02  ○ Blizzard 13  ○ Toad 26  ○ Bio (44) 47  ○ Quake
*  ○ Fire 15  ○ Stop (31) 32  ○ Aspir (46) 49  ○ Break
05  ○ Thunder 20  ○ Porky (35) 36  ○ Drain (48) 51  ○ Tornado
08  ○ Sleepel **  ○ Blizzara (38) 39  ○ Blizzaga (49) 52  ○ Death
10  ○ Poison **  ○ Fira (40) 42  ○ Figa (50) 55  ○ Flare
12  ○ Dejon **  ○ Thundara (42) 45  ○ Thundaga 60  ○ Meteor

Levels in parentheses apply to the English and EasyType versions.

* Learned in an event as a child.

** Already learned when she joins as an adult.

Rydia also has Cura learned when she joins as an adult, but with her White Magic command removed, it doesn't do her any good.

Black Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad status also disables all spells except Toad, and Pig status disables all spells except Porky.

しょうかん Summon Call

Use Summon magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Rydia learns the following summons in the indicated ways:

adult  ◎ Shiva beat  ◎ Leviathan item  ◎ Goblin
always  ◎ Chocobo adult  ◎ Ifrit beat  ◎ Asura item  ◎ Bomb
adult  ◎ Ramuh beat  ◎ Odin * item  ◎ Cockatrice
quest  ◎ Sylph adult  ◎ Dragon beat  ◎ Bahamut item  ◎ Mindflayer
adult  ◎ Titan

Always: Already learned when she joins the party.

Adult: Already learned when she joins as an adult.

Beat: To learn this Summon, you must find, challenge, and defeat the creature summoned.

Quest: Involves a sidequest.

Item: Learned by using the corresponding item, rarely won in battle from certain monsters of its type.

* Nothing drops the Cockatrice item in the English or EasyType versions, though the summon still technically exists.

Rydia cannot use Summon when under Toad, Pig, or Silence status.

Attributes Summary

Identical to child Rydia. She even inherits all experience and optional Summon Magic.

にんじゃ Ninja Ninja

忍者 (ninja) in kanji.

Characters
エッジ Edge Edge
Command List

Different versions order the Ninja's command list differently. The original version has them in the order below (Ninjutsu, Throw, Steal). The English version uses the order Dart, Sneak, Ninja. Apparently following the English version, the EasyType also uses the order Throw, Steal, Ninjutsu.

にんじゅつ Ninjutsu Ninja

Use Ninja skills. Refer to the Magic page for details. Edge learns the following skills at the indicated levels:

always  Katon event  Suiton event  Raijin
27  Kage Shibari 33  Smoke Ball 38  Bunshin

Edge cannot use Ninjutsu when under Toad, Pig, or Silence status.

なげる Throw Dart

That's a particularly curious translation. While darts can of course be used as thrown weapons, as a verb, it normally means sudden rapid movement. I don't think I've ever heard the word used in a way that could refer to the act of throwing itself, particularly not involving objects like knives, spears, and shuriken.

Throws a weapon at an enemy for boosted damage. The weapon must be throwable.

Edge cannot use Throw when under Toad or Minikin status.

Damage = (level * weapon's attack power) + (0~98). Ignores row and enemy defense.

For reference, normal attack damage for most characters is hit count, which maxes out at 19 when strength and agility are both at least 96, multiplied by (weapon attack) + (str / 4) + (level / 4), which maxes out at (weapon attack) + 48 and is then reduced by target defense.

ぬすむ Steal Sneak

Another curious translation. This word is about as unambiguous as they come. My best guess is that someone was thinking of the idiom 目を盗む (me wo nusumu), which refers to doing something stealthily in an effort to avoid notice, and literally means to steal someone's eyes.

Attempts to steal from an enemy. The item stolen is always the most common drop. Multiple steals are possible. The success message is straightforward:

{item}を ぬすんだ Stole {item}. Found {item}.

...or maybe the English version was just intent on avoiding any form of the word "steal", perhaps wary of NoA's draconian content policies.

Failure may result in taking some damage, with the following message:

モンスターにみつかった Noticed by the monster. Failed.

On the other hand, that message does seem to imply there is some sneaking going on.

I could have sworn there was a different English version message for this, something about finding a monster? On second thought, that might have been from a fan translation. Confusing みつかる (to be found) with みつける (to find) and misreading or ignoring the particles certainly has that sort of feel to it.

Simple failure gives this message instead:

ぬすみそこなった Failed to steal. Failed.

The steal rate depends on the user's level (UL hereafter) and the target's level (TL hereafter). Based on disassembly of the routine, success rate is essentially (40 + UL - TL)%, with a minimum of 1%. (More precisely, it compares 50 + UL - (enemy stat that's always level + 10 unless lowered by Feign Tears) to a random number from 0 to 98.)

When Steal fails, Edge then has roughly a (90 - TL)% chance to be caught and take damage (yes, the chance decreases the higher the target's level is; it also actually uses the abovementioned stat again, not level itself directly). Damage taken if caught is typically 2. If Edge's max HP is at least 4,096, that increases to 258, then to 514 if max HP reachs 8,192. This behavior appears to come from a janky implementation of the formula 2 + (max HP / 16) that ignores most of the lower bits of the value (note that 4,096 and 8,192 in decimal are 0x1000 and 0x2000 in hexadecimal). Possibly it was meant to steadily scale up with his max HP; possibly they decided they liked the inconsequential flat 2 and forgot that the actual behavior was more complicated. Such things have been known to happen.

In any case, Steal never gets any items when used against allies or against opponents with a 100% drop rate (only used for Lugae to drop his key and in the Development Room, so generally not an issue). Additionally, Edge cannot use the Steal command at all when under Toad status.

If a character has the item menu already open when stealing adds a new item to the inventory, the game forgets to check whether that character is allowed to equip it. As a result, any character (except Edge himself) can equip any weapon or shield Edge can steal. Follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you don't have any of the item in your inventory (equipped is fine).
  2. Command Edge to steal from an appropriate monster.
  3. Before he does, open the item menu on another character.
  4. If Edge succeeds, the weapon or shield will appear in the item menu.
  5. Equip the item as usual (select it and scroll up off the top of the list to access the character's right and left hand).

Handedness is still applied, so even with this trick, you can't equip a weapon in a character's off hand or use a shield alongside a two-handed weapon, for instance. The main practical application is giving Rydia a shield, since her left hand is typically empty and she could really use the extra protection.

In the DS remake, Edge can only steal one item per enemy, and the above glitch no longer exists. I don't think I've ever seen him take damage on an attempt, either. Otherwise, there aren't any obvious changes to how Steal works. In particular, it still seems limited to the most commonly dropped item.

Edge is the only character other than Dark Knight Cecil who has any attributes locked after level 70. It's even the same attribute. Overall, he fits the general ninja archetype, with high speed, good but unexceptional strength, mediocre durability, and enough intelligence to power his skills.

つきのたみ Lunarian Lunar

月の民 (tsuki no tami) in kanji, literally "person of the moon".

Characters
フースーヤ Fusuya FuSoYa

Such an odd name. I've attempted a phonetic approximation. As far as I can tell, it has no particular meaning. Speculation on the Final Fantasy Wiki suggests it may be meant to sound Chinese, possibly 福寿阿 (good fortune + long life + a generic character found in some names). His name is reportedly 福索亞 in the Chinese translation, though, so who knows?

Command List
しろまほう White Magic White

Use White Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Fusuya has all White Magic available (minus Protect, Shell, and Dispel in the English and EasyType).

White Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad and Pig status also disable the command during battle and all spells except Esuna in the field.

くろまほう Black Magic Black

Use Black Magic. Refer to the Magic page for details. Fusuya has all Black Magic available.

Black Magic is unusable when under Silence status. Toad status also disables all spells except Toad, and Pig status disables all spells except Porky.

せいしんは Spirit Wave Dummy

Periodically heals each party member 10 HP. Fusuya can take no other action while the effect continues. Lasts longer with lower agility.

Could that have been intended to be 10 percent of max HP? Or maybe even 10 MP? As it is, this does so little that it barely would have helped even at the beginning of the game, let alone when he actually joins the party. In any case, Fusuya can't use Spirit Wave when under Toad, Minikin, or Pig status.

The following message appears when Fusuya uses Spirit Wave:

HPが じょじょに かいふく HP gradually recovers. D

This command is removed in the English and EasyType versions. Good riddance.

Like Tella, Fusuya has terrible stat growth. In fact, the only one of his attributes that increases, or even changes, at all before level 70 is max HP, and that not by much. Beyond 70, his stat growth is just as lazy as Tella's, though at least his stats can't all drop to 1 even in the worst possible case.
