Weapons and attempted translations from...

Final Fantasy IV

Here's the weapons portion of the item list. Everything appears in the order the game stores them internally. Items are briefly explained as needed.

At least some of the extended weapon flags seem to be bugged in that they do not clear after removing the weapon. Due to this, a character will always have a long-ranged attack after having used any long-ranged weapon. I can't say whether bit 1 (whips and a few other weapons), bit 2 (Hand Axe and Ogre Killer), bit 3 (all hammers), bit 4 (unused), or bit 5 (Thunder Arrow) are similarly bugged, largely because it's uncertain whether they do anything at all. Maybe if I tracked down where they're actually stored in the game's memory...

There's some speculation that the unknown bits may affect things like critical hit rate or enemy target selection. Anecdotally, at least, hammers seem to have an usually high critical hit rate (though Cid himself has an innately elevated rate, which may be entirely responsible for the result), and some players have noted that they feel like characters using the Ogre Killer seem to draw hits from Giant type monsters more often. I haven't been able to find anything that indicates anyone has tested any of these possibilities in any depth, though, much less confirmed how the code works.

Bit 1, long known as the "can't critical" flag, doesn't actually prevent critical hits. I could have sworn characters who used such weapons just stop getting critical hits later on, though... but "could have sworn" isn't hard data. It might reduce critical hit rate, but I'm not even sure of that anymore.

Whether an item can be equipped is handled by "class" rather than by character. While there are two different White Mage classes internally, they have identical equipment sets, so there's no need to distinguish between them here. And to keep things briefer, I'll be using these shorthands for common values:

Items tagged as "metal" inflict a Paralyze-like effect on characters if equipped during a certain part of the story. The flag has no other known effects.

Note that Draining weapons work in reverse on the Undead, so the strong against Undead flag many of these have means they steal more of your HP.

Items with attached spells define an MHitX value for these spells. I usually list both the MHitX and an equivalent intelligence value (White Magic uses spirit instead). Typically, these are weaker than when cast normally (unless the user has rather poor stats), but they cost nothing and have no casting time.

In the DS remake, item-cast spells depend on the user's stats, generally making them more useful for longer. However, for spells like Blizzard and Porky that normally allow a choice between single and multiple targets, the DS remake allows only single-targetting when using a weapon as an item.

Weapons

Unarmed

Attack: 1, 50% hit Used for empty hand with bow or arrow in the other? Used by: Any

Claws
Attack: 0 Flame, 80% hit   Used by: Monk, Ninja
Attack: 0 Ice, 80% hit   Used by: Monk, Ninja
Attack: 0 Thunder, 80% hit strong against Machines Used by: Monk, Ninja
Attack: 0, 50% hit +3 agi, inflicts Confusion, strong against Giants Used by: Monk, Ninja

(Tempting Claw) in the EasyType.

Attack: 0, 90% hit +3 str, inflicts Poison Used by: Monk, Ninja

(Poison Claw) in the EasyType.

(claw) ねこのつめ (claw) Cat Claw (claw) CatClaw
Attack: 0, 99% hit +5 str, +5 agi, inflicts Sleep Used by: Monk, Ninja

Yang's damage output uses a special formula that ignores weapon strength and grows with his level, and he should base his weapon selection on enemy weaknesses to add multipliers to his attack power. The Hell and Cat Claws work best when no weaknesses apply, for the strength bonus, superior hit rate, and chance to inflict status effects. Similarly, the Faerie Claw's Confusion effect may come in handy at times, though its low hit rate makes it less appealing.

Claws are typically less useful for Edge, since although he can use them, he doesn't have Yang's special formula and so depends on weapon strength for a large portion of his attack power. However, don't forget that any applicable damage bonuses affect his entire attack. Plenty of monsters are weak against one of the three main elements or the various racial bonuses, including a late-game dungeon full of Machines to use the Thunder Claw against.

Rods
(rod) ロッド (rod) Rod (rod) Rod
Attack: 3, 40% hit use to cast 1 MHitX Magic Arrow (0~3 int) Used by: Black Magic users

(Magic Rod) in the EasyType.

The spell damage is 28 to 42 against an enemy with no magic defense.

Attack: 5 Ice, 45% hit strong against Reptiles,
use to cast 2 MHitX Blizzard (4~7 int)
Used by: Black Magic users

Renamed to こおりのロッド (still "Ice Rod", just with a Japanese term for "ice") in the EasyType.

The spell damage is 32 to 48 against a single neutral enemy with no magic defense.

It's too bad that this is nearly worthless for attacking, since it's the only weapon in the game with a bonus against Reptiles.

Attack: 7 Flame, 45% hit +3 int, use to cast 3 MHitX Fire (8~11 int) Used by: Black Magic users

Renamed to ほのおのロッド (still "Flame Rod", just with a Japanese term for "flame") in the EasyType.

The spell damage is 48 to 72 against a single neutral enemy with no magic defense.

Attack: 10 Thunder, 50% hit +3 int, use to cast 4 MHitX Thunder (12~15 int) Used by: Black Magic users

Renamed to いかづちのロッド (still "Thunder Rod", just with a Japanese term for "thunder") in the EasyType.

The spell damage is 64 to 96 against a single neutral enemy with no magic defense.

Attack: 15, 50% hit +5 int, use to cast Porky Used by: Black Magic users

Found hidden deep in a fireplace in Mist. That seems to be the only one in the game.

The Transformation Rod's item effect never seems to fail unless the target is entirely immune. Take advantage of it.

Attack: 30, 55% hit +10 int, use to cast Confuse Used by: Black Magic users

(Tempting Rod) in the EasyType.

The Faerie Rod's item effect seems to have the same uncanny success rate of the Transformation Rod, making it handy against certain enemies. The downsides are that it can only target one enemy at a time, and that the status effect wears off upon taking a hit.

Attack: 45, 60% hit +15 int, use to cast 7 MHitX Minimeteor (24~27 int) Used by: Black Magic users

The spell damage is 560 to 840 against enemies with no magic defense.

Attack: 13 Draining, 10% hit +5 int, strong against Undead,
use to cast 8 MHitX Aspir (28~31 int)
Used by: Black Magic users

(Witch's Rod) in the EasyType.

That's an instant Aspir with a decent number of hits, strong enough to drain 128 to 192 MP from an enemy with no magic defense. Since Aspir normally takes fairly long to cast, even mages with high int can get a lot of use out of this.

Staves
(staff) つえ (staff) Staff (staff) Staff
Attack: 4, 45% hit use to cast Poisona (removes Poison from one target) Used by: White Magic users

(Detoxifying Staff) in the EasyType.

Attack: 8, 50% hit use to cast 2 MHitX Heal (all allies recover 24~36 HP) Used by: White Magic users

Mainly useful early in the game. The healing isn't much, but it's free and reliable.

Attack: 12, 55% hit, metal +3 spr, strong against Undead, use to cast Basuna (removes Berserk, Confusion, Sleep, and Paralysis from one target) Used by: White Magic users

The Mithril Staff is something of an oddity in that every other piece of mithril equipment is effective against Spirits, not the Undead.

Attack: 30, 99% hit +10 str, inflicts Berserk Used by: White Magic users except Paladin
Attack: 36, 60% hit +10 spr, use to cast Dispel (removed in English version) Used by: White Magic users except Paladin
(staff) けんじゃのつえ (staff) Sage's Staff (staff) Life
Attack: 48, 65% hit +15 spr, use to cast Raise Used by: White Magic users except Paladin
Attack: 52, 60% hit +10 spr, inflicts Silence, strong against Mages,
use to cast Silence, {bit 1}
Used by: White Magic users except Paladin

Found as a semi-rare drop from the Marionetter, Sorcerer, and Summoner enemies.

Renamed to まふうじのつえ ("Magic-Sealing Staff" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Dark Swords
(dark sword) あんこくのつるぎ (dark sword) Sword of Darkness (dark sword) Shadow
Attack: 10 Dark, 80% hit, metal   Used by: Dark Knight
(dark sword) シャドーブレイド (dark sword) Shadow Blade (dark sword) Darkness
Attack: 20 Dark, 85% hit, metal   Used by: Dark Knight

Renamed to やみのつるぎ (roughly "Sword of the Dark" with purely Japanese terms, as opposed to "shadow" transliterated from English) in the EasyType.

(dark sword) デスブリンガー (dark sword) Deathbringer (dark sword) Black
Attack: 30 Dark, 90% hit, metal inflicts Incapacitated, -10 spr, +5 all other stats Used by: Dark Knight

Light Swords
(light sword) でんせつのつるぎ (light sword) Sword of Legend (light sword) Legend
Attack: 40 Holy, 99% hit, metal +3 spr Used by: Paladin
(light sword) ひかりのつるぎ (light sword) Sword of Light (light sword) Light
Attack: 99 Holy, 99% hit, metal, throwable +3 str, +3 spr Used by: Paladin
(light sword) エクスカリバー (light sword) Excalibur (light sword) Excalbur
Attack: 160 Holy, 99% hit, metal, throwable +10 str Used by: Paladin

Swords
Attack: 65 Flame, 80% hit, metal   Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Renamed to ほのおのけん (still "Flame Sword", just with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Attack: 75 Ice, 80% hit, metal   Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Renamed to こおりのけん ("Ice Sword" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Attack: 105, 90% hit, metal, throwable +15 stm, use to cast Protect (removed in English version) Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Renamed to まもりのけん ("Sword of Protection" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Attack: 45 Draining, 50% hit, metal, throwable -5 all stats, strong against Giants, Slimes, and Undead Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Renamed to ちにうえたのけん ("Bloodthirsty Sword" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType, which also removes the racial modifiers and raises the attack to 77 and hit to 80%.

Attack: 35, 77% hit, metal, throwable inflicts Curse, strong against Spirits Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Found in a secret passage in the Ancient Waterway under Baron.

Replaced with the さんごのけん (Coral Sword) in the EasyType. The Coral Sword has 45 attack, 99% hit, is metal and throwable, has Thunder damage, is strong against Spirits, and can be used by the Wyrmknight and Paladin (but doesn't inflict Curse).

(sword) ねむりのけん (sword) Sword of Slumber (sword) Slumber
Attack: 55, 77% hit, metal, throwable inflicts Sleep, use to cast Sleepel Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Found in a chest in Eblana Castle, guarded by monsters.

The Sword of Slumber's item effect reportedly depends on agility to determine success. Weird.

Attack: 77, 66% hit, metal, throwable inflicts Gradual Petrification (2/3) Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Found as a rare drop from the Black Lizard, Medusa, and Gorgon enemies.

Renamed to せきかのけん ("Petrifying Sword" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Be careful with this... there are reports that giving monsters the Gradual Petrification status effect may cause freezes on all SFC/SNES versions...

Spears
(spear) スピア (spear) Spear (spear) Spear
Attack: 9 Projectile, 99% hit, metal   Used by: Wyrmknight

Renamed to やり (still "Spear", but purely Japanese) in the EasyType.

Attack: 55 Projectile, 80% hit, metal   Used by: Wyrmknight

Equipped on Cain the second time he joins the party, but that seems to be the only one in the game.

Renamed to かぜのやり (still "Wind Spear", just with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Attack: 66 Flame Projectile, 80% hit, metal use to cast 4 MHitX Fira (12~15 int) Used by: Wyrmknight

The spell damage is 256 to 384 against a single neutral enemy with no magic defense.

Attack: 77 Ice Projectile, 80% hit, metal use to cast 4 MHitX Blizzara (12~15 int) Used by: Wyrmknight

The spell damage is 256 to 384 against a single neutral enemy with no magic defense.

Attack: 99 Projectile, 80% hit, metal, throwable strong against Dragons Used by: Wyrmknight

Found as a semi-rare drop from Red Dragons and a rare drop from Blue Dragons. Though weaker than the Holy Lance, the bonus against dragons makes it substantially more effective in some situations.

Attack: 109 Holy Projectile, 80% hit, metal, throwable strong against Spirits, use to cast 2 MHitX Holy (4~7 int) Used by: Wyrmknight

Renamed to せいなるやり (still "Holy Lance", just with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

The spell damage is 680 to 1020 against a neutral enemy with no magic defense.

Holy is often an advantage in this game, and hardly ever a drawback. Blue Dragons are a rare exception (except in the EasyType).

Attack: 88 Draining, 22% hit, metal, throwable -10 all stats, strong against Giants, Slimes, and Undead Used by: Wyrmknight

Found in a chest in Eblana Castle, guarded by monsters.

Renamed to ちにうえたのやり ("Bloodthirsty Lance" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType, which also removes the racial modifiers and drops the attack to 64, but raises the hit rate to 90%.

Attack: 92 Projectile, 80% hit, metal, throwable +15 stm Used by: Wyrmknight

Equipped on Cain the third time he joins the party, but that seems to be the only one in the game.

Renamed to えいゆうのやり ("Hero's Spear" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Norse mythology names Odin's spear as Gungnir.

Ninja Swords
(ninja sword) くない (ninja sword) Kunai (ninja sword) Short
Attack: 25, 90% hit, metal, throwable   Used by: Ninja

Renamed to かたな (Katana) in the EasyType for no apparent reason.

The kunai, a roughly leaf-shaped ninja-style knife, can be thrown or used in close-quarters combat.

(ninja sword) あしゅら (ninja sword) Asura (ninja sword) Middle
Attack: 32, 90% hit, metal   Used by: Ninja

(Shinobi Katana) in the EasyType for no apparent reason. The EasyType also makes it throwable.

(Asura) is a battle demon (or god, depending) from Hindu mythology.

(ninja sword) こてつ (ninja sword) Kotetsu (ninja sword) Long
Attack: 40, 90% hit, metal   Used by: Ninja

The EasyType also makes this throwable.

(Kotetsu) was a famous swordsmith.

(ninja sword) きくいちもんじ (ninja sword) Kikuichimonji (ninja sword) Ninja
Attack: 48, 90% hit, metal, throwable +5 str Used by: Ninja

As far as I can make out, the 菊一文字 (kikuichimonji) was both an imperial crest with a 16-petaled chrysanthemum and a specially crafted sword engraved with it.

(ninja sword) ムラサメ (ninja sword) Murasame (ninja sword) Murasame
Attack: 55, 90% hit, metal, throwable +5 str, -5 agi, +5 stm, +5 int, -5 spr,
use to cast Protect (removed in English version)
Used by: Ninja

The EasyType adds ようとう (youtou, roughly Eldrich Blade) at the beginning of the name for no apparent reason.

(Murasame) was a swordsmith of moderate renown.

(ninja sword) マサムネ (ninja sword) Masamune (ninja sword) Masamune
Attack: 65, 99% hit, metal, throwable +3 agi, use to cast Haste Used by: Ninja

The EasyType adds まけん (maken, roughly Demon Sword) at the beginning of the name for no apparent reason.

(Masamune) was a legendary swordsmith whose blades are (to overly summarize) said to actively avoid meaningless destruction.

Knives
Attack: 29, 55% hit, metal, throwable +5 str, +5 agi, +5 stm, -10 int, -10 spr, inflicts Incapacitated Used by: Wyrmknight, Summoner (child or adult), Royalty, Black Mage, Paladin, Ninja

(Combat Knife) in the EasyType for no apparent reason.

There is no known legitimate way to get this weapon. Which really makes you wonder why they bothered to change the name for the EasyType...

Attack: 35, 75% hit, metal, throwable +5 int, inflicts Silence, strong against Mages Used by: Wyrmknight, Summoner (child or adult), Royalty, Black Mage, Paladin, Ninja

Renamed to まふうじのナイフ ("Magic-Sealing Knife" with more pure Japanese) in the EasyType.

This can be very useful for Edge. Though weaker than most of his usual weapons, its racial bonus quadruples his total attack damage against the right enemies.

Whips
(whip) むち (whip) Whip (whip) Whip
Attack: 20, 50% hit, ranged Inflicts Paralyze, {bit 1} Used by: Summoner (child or adult)
Attack: 30, 55% hit, metal, ranged Inflicts Paralyze, {bit 1} Used by: Summoner (child or adult)

Renamed to くさりのむち (still "Chain Whip", just with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Attack: 40 Thunder, 60% hit, ranged inflicts Paralyze, {bit 1} Used by: Summoner (child or adult)
Attack: 50 Flame, 65% hit, ranged +5 str, +5 agi, +5 stm, -5 int, -5 spr,
inflicts Paralyze, {bit 1}
Used by: Summoner (child or adult)

Renamed to ほのおのむち ("Flame Whip" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

(whip) りゅうのひげ (whip) Dragon's Whisker (whip) Dragon
Attack: 55, 75% hit, ranged +5 str, +5 agi, +5 stm, -5 int, -5 spr,
inflicts Paralyze, strong against Dragons, {bit 1}
Used by: Summoner (child or adult)

Found as a semi-rare drop from Blue Dragons.

One-Handed Axes
Attack: 35, 50% hit, metal, throwable +3 str, {bit 2} Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer

This item appears to be unused, but is renamed to おの ("Axe" in pure Japanese) in the EasyType anyway.

Attack: 62, 69% hit, metal, ranged +5 str, -5 agi, +5 stm, -5 int, -5 spr, {bit 1} Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer

The EasyType raises attack to 70 and hit to 90%, and also adds strong against Mages.

Attack: 80, 69% hit (85% in NA), metal strong against Giants, {bit 1}, {bit 2} Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer

Renamed to おにごろし (still "Ogre Killer", just with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType, which also raises attack to 96 and hit to 90%, and adds +5 str.

Assorted Blades
Attack: 20, 99% hit, metal, throwable strong against Spirits Used by: Wyrmknight, Summoner (child or adult), Royalty, Black Mage, Paladin, Ninja
Attack: 28, 94% hit, metal, throwable use to cast 8 MHitX Dancing Dagger (28~31 int) Used by: Wyrmknight, Summoner (child or adult), Royalty, Black Mage, Paladin, Ninja

Renamed to おどるたんけん (still "Dancing Dagger", just with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

The spell damage is 320 to 480 against an enemy with no magic defense.

Attack: 50, 80% hit, metal strong against Spirits Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Replaced with the こぶたのしない (Piglet's Bamboo Sword) in the EasyType. The Piglet's Bamboo Sword has 51 attack, 99% hit, inflicts Pig, is used by the Wyrmknight and Paladin, and, perhaps most importantly, is NOT metal (though it also lacks the bonus damage to Spirits). It isn't sold in the Mithril Town, but instead appears in a pot in the eastern tower of Baron Castle. It's also the rarest drop from Mithril Golems, as the Mithril Sword is in other versions.

(knife) ほうちょう (knife) Carving Knife (knife) Spoon
Attack: 255, 99% hit, metal, throwable   Used by: None (thrown only)
(light sword) ラグナロク (light sword) Ragnarök (light sword) Crystal
Attack: 200 Holy, 99% hit, metal +15 str, +15 stm, +15 spr, strong against Undead, {bit 1} Used by: Paladin

Renamed to かみがみのけん ("Sword of the Gods" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Throwing Stars
(throwing star) しゅりけん (throwing star) Shuriken (throwing star) Shuriken
Attack: 40 Projectile, 99% hit, metal, throwable, ranged   Used by: None (thrown only)

The EasyType raises the attack to 60.

(throwing star) ふうましゅりけん (throwing star) Fuuma Shuriken (throwing star) Ninja
Attack: 80 Projectile, 99% hit, metal, throwable, ranged {bit 1} Used by: None (thrown only)

The EasyType raises the attack to 100.

風魔手裏剣 (fuuma shuriken) are popular in ninja anime and so forth, though I can't say whether they ever really existed. Basically, they're oversized throwing stars, measuring several feet across. 風魔 (fuuma) approximately translates to "wind demon".

Throwing Weapons
Attack: 20 Projectile, 80% hit, ranged   Used by: Ninja

The EasyType raises the hit to 90%.

Attack: 40 Projectile, 85% hit, ranged   Used by: Ninja

The EasyType raises the hit to 95%.

Harps

As if harps weren't bad enough to begin with, they aren't even long-ranged except in the English version.

Attack: 8, 85% hit, 2-handed,
(ranged in English version only)
inflicts Sleep Used by: Royalty

The EasyType raises the hit to 90.

Attack: 18, 90% hit, 2-handed,
(ranged in English version only)
inflicts Confusion Used by: Royalty

Renamed to あやしのたてごと (roughly "Uncanny Harp") in the EasyType, which also raises the hit to 95.

Unused
 よび        spare  Dummy
Attack: 200 Holy, 99% hit, metal, 2-handed +15 str, +15 stm, +15 spr,
strong against Undead, {bit 1}
Used by: None

Same stats as the Ragnarok, except for the two-handedness and the fact that it's unusable. It's also valued at 125,000 gil, for what it's worth.

Two-Handed Axes
Attack: 95, 60% hit, metal, 2-handed Inflicts Poison, strong against Giants, use to cast 8 MHitX Poison (28~31 int) Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer

Renamed to どくのおの (still "Poison Axe", just with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType, which also raises attack to 105 and hit to 90% and makes it throwable.

Attack: 100, 60% hit, metal, 2-handed strong against Mages Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer

Found as a rare drop from the Giant Soldier and Daemon Soldier enemies.

Renamed to まふうじのおの ("Magic-Sealing Axe" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType, which also raises attack to 120 and hit to 90% and makes it throwable.

use to cast 1 MHitX Quake (0~3 int)
Used by: Engineer

The EasyType raises the hit to 85%.

The spell damage is 200 to 300 against enemies with no magic defense.

(tool) きづち (tool) Wooden Hammer (tool) Wooden
Attack: 45, 75% hit, 2-handed strong against Machines, {bit 3} Used by: Engineer

The EasyType raises the hit to 85%.

Random Sword
Attack: 80, 95% hit, metal, throwable, 2-handed +10 str, +10 agi, +10 stm, -10 int, -10 spr,
user is constantly Berserk
Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin

Renamed to いかりのけん ("Rage Sword" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType, which also raises attack to 100.

Bows

Bow effects are only applied when arrows are also equipped.

(bow) ゆみ (bow) Bow (bow) ShortBow
Attack: 10 Projectile, 30% hit, ranged   Used by: Archers

The EasyType raises the hit to 40%.

Renamed to おおゆみ ("Greatbow" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType, which also raises hit to 45%.

Attack: 30 Projectile, 40% hit, ranged +3 str Used by: Archers

Renamed to ちからのゆみ ("Power Bow" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType, which also raises hit to 50%.
