Items and attempted translations from...

Final Fantasy VI

Here's the armors portion of the item list. Everything appears in the order the game stores them internally. Items are briefly explained as needed.

And by the way... due to a bug, evade is useless, and is listed here only for completeness. Someone apparently fouled up a reference, and MEvd is used for dodging even physical attacks. It's really too bad, given the amount of equipment with evade bonuses. On the other hand, nearly all monsters have 0% MEvd, so you'll almost never have any trouble hitting them...

Shields

Keep in mind that the evade bug makes evade worthless, reducing the usefulness of shields. However, each shield that gives an evade bonus (all but the Ensanguined Shield and the Force Shield) also has a flag that enables a shield block animation. Some shields with MEvd also enable a magic blocking animation.

Defense: 16, 10 MDef, +10 evd   Used by: Everyone but Umaro

 Sometimes evades enemy magic attacks
(shield) Aegis Shld
 Randomly evades magic attack
Defense: 46, 52 MDef, +20 evd, +40 MEvd Magic blocking animation Used by: Everyone but Umaro

Aegis is Zeus's shield in Greek mythology and bears the head of Medusa (probably, depending on which myth you ask), which is why it often negates petrification in other games. It won't prevent petrification in this one, but the high MEvd makes it extremely useful.

(shield) ダイアのたて (shield) Diamond Shield (shield) Diamond Shld
Defense: 40, 27 MDef, +10 evd   Used by: Tina, Cayenne, Edgar, Celes, Setzer
(shield) Flame Shield
 Absorbs Flame trait attacks
(shield) Flame Shld
 Absorbs Fire-elemental attack
Defense: 41, 28 MDef, +20 evd, +10 MEvd Absorbs Flame, negates Ice, weak to Water,
teaches ○ Fira x5, break for ○ Figa
Used by: Everyone but Umaro

When used as an item, this shield casts ○ Figa as cast by the user, with the following exceptions: always inflicts maximum damage (i.e., no damage variation), ignores target's MDef, ignores 'shell' and 'transform' status on target, ignores penalty for players attacking players, unreflectable.

(shield) Ice Shield
 Absorbs Ice trait attacks
(shield) Ice Shld
 Absorbs Ice-elemental attack
Defense: 42, 28 MDef, +20 evd, +10 MEvd Absorbs Ice, negates Flame, weak to Wind,
teaches ○ Blizzara x5, break for ○ Blizzaga
Used by: Everyone but Umaro

When used as an item, this shield casts ○ Blizzaga as cast by the user, with the following exceptions: always inflicts maximum damage (i.e., no damage variation), ignores target's MDef, ignores 'shell' and 'transform' status on target, ignores penalty for players attacking players, unreflectable.

(shield) Thundergod's Shield
 Absorbs Thunder trait attacks

 Absorbs Thunder-elemental
 attack
Defense: 43, 28 MDef, +20 evd, +10 MEvd Absorbs Thunder, negates Wind, halves Flame and Ice,
teaches ○ Thundara x5, break for ○ Thundaga
Used by: Everyone but Umaro

When used as an item, this shield casts ○ Thundaga as cast by the user, with the following exceptions: always inflicts maximum damage (i.e., no damage variation), ignores target's MDef, ignores 'shell' and 'transform' status on target, ignores penalty for players attacking players, unreflectable.

Unlike the Flame and Ice Shields, the Thundergod's Shield has no weakness, making it more useful as general-purpose equipment.

Defense: 50, 34 MDef, +10 evd   Used by: Tina, Cayenne, Edgar, Celes, Setzer
(shield) げんじのたて (shield) Genji's Shield (shield) Genji Shld
Defense: 54, 50 MDef, +20 evd, +20 MEvd Magic blocking animation Used by: Everyone but Umaro

(Genji) is the title character of a famous early Japanese novel, commonly referred to as "The Tale of Genji".

(shield) Carapace Shield
If you equip it during kappa status...
(shield) TortoiseShld
??? if equipped while an Imp
Defense: 66, MDef 66, +30 evd, +30 MEvd Absorbs Water, teaches ◎ Kappa x1 Used by: Everyone but Umaro

The listed defense power only applies in 'kappa' status. Otherwise, the shield gives only 1 defense, though all other effects (including MDef) apply normally.

(shield) Ensanguined Shield
 Cursed
(shield) Cursed Shld
 Is cursed
Defense: 0, -7 str, -7 agi, -7 stm, -7 mag Weak to Flame, Ice, Thunder, Water, Earth, and Poison,
inflicts 'silence', 'berserk', 'confusion', 'slip', and 'death sentence' on wearer
Used by: Everyone but Umaro

Though this shield is worse than useless, put up with it for 256 battles (the wearer must be alive at the end of each battle) and it becomes the mighty Hero's Shield. Gogo cannot uncurse it, apparently because the counter is linked to earning LP, which Gogo does not do.

I got the name "ensanguined" from the NA version of Final Fantasy XII and claim no credit for coming up with it. It means "bloodstained" or "coated with blood", as does the Japanese name.

(shield) Hero's Shield
A hero's soul dwells in the shield
(shield) Paladin Shld
 Houses a hero's soul
Defense: 59, 59 MDef, +40 evd, +40 MEvd Absorbs Flame, Ice, Thunder, and Holy,
negates Water, Wind, Earth, and Poison,
teaches ○ Ultima x1, magic blocking animation
Used by: Everyone but Umaro

It should go without saying, but this is the game's best shield in all but a few limited cases where the Force Shield or Carapace Shield might be preferable.

(shield) Force Shield
A shield that protects against magic only
(shield) Force Shld
 Protects against magic attack
Defense: 0, 70 MDef, +50 MEvd Halves Flame, Ice, Thunder, Water, Wind, and Earth, gives 'shell' status, teaches ◎ Shell x5, magic blocking animation Used by: Everyone but Umaro

Though lacking any physical defense, the Force Shield provides superior magic resistance, especially when combined with something like the Minerva Bustier.

Defense: 24, 25 MDef, +1 agi, +3 mag, +10 MEvd   Used by: Tina, Celes, Relm

Typically the best headgear for Tina and Celes thanks to the bonuses, despite its relatively early availability.

Defense: 25, 19 MDef, +2 str, +1 agi, +3 stm, +4 mag   Used by: Everyone but Umaro

Personally, I tend to favor the Circlet over the various other headgears with higher defense but no stat bonuses.

Defense: 28, 23 MDef, +1 str, +1 agi, +1 stm, +1 mag   Used by: Edgar, Mash

+10 evd, +10 MEvd
Halves Flame, Ice, Thunder, Wind, Earth, and Holy,
doubles gil earned from battles
Used by: Relm

The best headgear in the game, in my opinion, with high defense and some very nice bonuses, but only Relm can use it, even with a Medal.

(helm) げんじのかぶと (helm) Genji's Helmet (helm) Genji Helmet
Defense: 36, 38 MDef   Used by: Everyone but Umaro

(Genji) is the title character of a famous early Japanese novel, commonly referred to as "The Tale of Genji".

(helm) Crown of Thorns
 Thorns stick in head, ouch
(helm) Thornlet
 Thorns inflict pain
Defense: 38, no MDef Inflicts 'slip' status on wearer Used by: Everyone but Umaro
(helm) Dish
If you equip it during kappa status...
(helm) Titanium
??? if equipped while an Imp
Defense: 42, 42 MDef Absorbs Water, teaches ◎ Kappa x1 Used by: Everyone but Umaro

"Titanium"? It's just a plate, like what you put food on. Kappa supposedly use them to cover the water-filled depressions atop their heads.

The listed defense power only applies in 'kappa' status. Otherwise, the headgear gives only 1 defense, though all other effects (including MDef) apply normally.

(armor) ちからだすき (armor) Empowering Suit (armor) Power Sash
Defense: 52, 35 MDef, +5 str, +1 agi, +5 stm   Used by: Lock, Cayenne, Shadow, Mash, Gau

If I'm right about the kanji, that's 力出す着: 力 (chikara, power), 出す (dasu, bring/take/draw out), 着 (ki, clothes).

(armor) ひかりのローブ (armor) Robe of Light (armor) Light Robe
Defense: 60, 43 MDef, +2 mag   Used by: Stragus, Relm, Gogo

(armor) Force Armor
 Mag Def up
Defense: 69, 68 MDef, +30 MEvd Halves Flame, Ice, Thunder, Wind, and Earth Used by: Tina, Lock, Cayenne, Edgar, Celes, Setzer

The physical defense isn't half bad either, unlike the Force Shield. Factor in the MEvd, and this is among the game's best armor.

Defense: 70, 47 MDef   Used by: Tina, Cayenne, Edgar, Celes, Setzer
Defense: 68, 46 MDef, +6 agi   Used by: Lock, Shadow, Mash, Setzer, Gau, Gogo
Defense: 68, 50 MDef, +5 mag, +10 MEvd Used by: Stragus, Relm, Gogo

It's probably Taoist, especially if the kanji (not given in-game) are 道士, but several Japanese websites give the kanji as 導士. That's the same as what I translate to "sorcerer", minus the 魔, so I'm not sure what to think.

Defense: 72, MDef 49   Used by: Tina, Lock, Cayenne, Edgar, Celes, Setzer
Defense: 70, 64 MDef, +1 str, +2 agi, +3 stm, +3 mag   Used by: Relm

Not bad, but the Behemoth Suit utterly outclasses it, and you're likely to have one before you get a chance to use this.

(armor) げんじのよろい (armor) Genji's Armor (armor) Genji Armor
Defense: 90, 80 MDef, +5 str, +3 agi, +2 stm, +3 mag   Used by: Tina, Lock, Cayenne, Shadow, Edgar, Celes, Setzer

(armor) Armor Kappa
If you equip it during kappa status...
(armor) Imp's Armor
??? if equipped while an Imp
Defense: 100, 100 MDef Absorbs Water, teaches ◎ Kappa x1 Used by: Everyone but Umaro

The listed defense power only applies in 'kappa' status. Otherwise, the armor gives only 1 defense, though all other effects (including MDef) apply normally.

(armor) Minerva Bustier
 MP increases 25%
(armor) Minerva
 Raises MP by 1/4
Defense: 80, 70 MDef, +1 str, +2 agi, +1 stm, +4 mag,
+10 MEvd
Negates Flame, Ice, Thunder, and Wind,
halves Water, Earth, Poison, and Holy,
+25% max MP
Used by: Tina, Celes

Note the full name. Not for no reason is Relm, female or not, unable to use it. The Japanese definition of the term is a waist-length strapless bra, or outerwear of a similar design. I can just picture Edgar drooling, and if you think Celes made an impression on Lock in the opera scene...

(armor) Sleepy Cat Suit
A costume that imitates a tabby cat
(armor) Tabby Suit
 Resembles a tabby cat
Defense: 54, 36 MDef, +2 str, +2 agi, +2 stm, +2 mag Negates Poison Used by: Stragus, Relm

(GORONEKO) blends gorone (napping) with neko (cat), but goro could also be the sound of purring or of something fat rolling, which still fits cats.

(armor) Chocobo Suit
 Feel like a chocobo
(armor) Chocobo Suit
 Feel like a chocobo!
Defense: 56, 38 MDef, +3 str, +6 agi, +2 stm Negates Poison Used by: Stragus, Relm

(armor) Moogle Suit
Look just like a moogle, kupo
(armor) Moogle Suit
 Be a moogle! Kupo!!
Defense: 58, 52 MDef, +5 mag Negates Poison Used by: Stragus, Relm

Wearers of the Moogle Suit look like moogles in combat. Too bad the other suits don't do something similar.

(armor) Nutsin Suit
 A big squirrel costume
(armor) Nutkin Suit
 A squirrel costume
Defense: 86, 67 MDef, +7 agi, +3 mag   Used by: Stragus, Relm

The fluffy soft fur is warm
(armor) Snow Muffler
 How cozy!
Defense: 128, 90 MDef, +10 evd, +10 MEvd Absorbs Ice, halves Flame Used by: Mog, Gau, Umaro

The incredibly high physical defense lets Mog and Gau reach a total of 255, at which point all defendable physical attacks inflict 1 damage at most.
