METHOD_IMPLANTA/.

Couldn't resist doing a METHOD song. I was thinking of METHOD_REPLEKIA/. first, but that one is surprisingly long and has no pure Japanese portions to change things up. I did get to it eventually, though.

After starting on the song, searching the web, and cross-referencing with the other songs, I found that a number of songs relating specifically to Infel Phira and Metafalica contain parts of the tale of a girl named Rhaplanca. Neither she nor the great tree Implanta she attempts to grow nor her companion Maoh nor even the tale itself are mentioned anywhere in the game text that I'm aware of, yet the pieces of her story are highly relevant both to the songs they appear in and to the points in the plot at which these songs are sung. The part in this song appears to be the third of five, with the previous (and most closely related, yet also most different) portion in EXEC_HAIBANATION/. and the next portion in METHOD_METAFALICA/.

Anyhow, Implanta demonstrates that you can tell a good deal about the intent of a song just by listening to it, even if you can't understand a word. In contrast to the slow and rather depressing EXEC_HAIBANATION/. that caused the damage Implanta reverses, this song is upbeat and hopeful. You'll find that the lyrics reflect the same concept. Whereas in Hibernation, Rhaplanca loses hope, in Implanta, Maoh helps her rekindle it and try anew to achieve her goals.

Another way of looking at the story is that the original Metafalica, along with Hibernation, represent the initial attempt at land creation. While well-intentioned, both the efforts to create land and Rhaplanca's efforts to grow the tree are doomed to failure. There simply isn't enough energy to be had for the creaton to work, just as Rhaplanca can't do enough on her own to make the tree grow. And so Rhaplanca was given a supporting companion in Maoh, as Metafalica was given a supporting complement through Infel Phira.

Sections with Hymmnos lyrics are listed with the Hymmnos lyrics in the center column (which I always use for pronunciation) and the given Japanese equivalents in the left column in this color to indicate that the Japanese phrases are not the actual lyrics.

Note that I'm using "man" and the corresponding pronoun "he" to mean "humankind", not a specific person or gender.

The game version now loops back to "xN rre harr f.s. tes maoh..." (the beginning of the above Hymmnos section, after the first Japanese "verse").

The next two lines are sung with the two that follow. "xN herra.... enw h.r.n.t./." is in the dominant voice, while "xN rre... maen olo/." is in the softer, higher voice.

The Hymmnos

Keep in mind that I'm working from a Japanese description of how the language works and Japanese descriptions of the terms. Translations of translations always tend to suffer somewhat in quality.... Also note that I'm not entirely certain of how to write the pronunciations of emotive sound verbs with emotive vowels added for certain combinations that are neither natural in Japanese nor shown in examples on the Hymmno Server.

Refer to my brief Hymmnos reference for general information on how the language works. This song specifically uses the Neopact Pastalie variant.

If you have the Hymmnos font installed, the headings below should appear in the script used in the game. Hey, why not? The font is available from the Hymmno Server, where most of my information on Hymmnos comes from. The site is mostly in Japanese, but the download link itself is in English. If you don't have the font, the headings will simply appear as large Latin text.

"exali" isn't in the dictionary, but based on the given translation and the similarity to words such as "excel" we can guess that it means something similar to "brilliant". "Brilliant sunlight" is then the subject, and the rest is fairly simple.

My best guess at a literal translation is, "Brilliant sunlight lights the world for all to prosper (and I feel focused or eager)."

The dictionary doesn't list "sorr", but by extrapolation it must be the subject version of "sor" (much as "yor" is an object and "yorr" is a subject). The pronuncation of the same word is also a conclusion drawn from the pronunciation of similar words. The rest of the sentence is a bit messy, but not too complicated as such things go.

My best guess at a literal translation is, "As though it is a blessing upon the new morning, for all to prosper (and I feel focused or eager)."

Wow, that's a lot of verbs. Still, the sentence structure isn't really very complicated. Certain words are of particular interest though. Specifically, "rhaplanca", who is the protagonist of the tale that this song tells a portion of; "Implanta", which is the great tree she is attemping to grow as well as the name of this song; and "1001", because the pronunciation doesn't match anything I can come up with that it ought to sound like. Also of some interest is that the Hymmnos is inconsistent as to whether proper nouns (such as people's names) are to be capitalized. The heroine's name is all lower-case here, yet "Implanta" is capitalized, and several lines later both "Rhaplanca" and "Maoh" have initial capitals.

On the matter of "1001", information on what has become my favorite reference site for dealing with practical (or at least in-game) Hymmnos suggests that Neopact Pastalie has an alternate system for pronouncing numbers than the one normally used. The suggested pronunciation (which sounds close enough to be possibly correct) is ノイ・フェフラ・ノイ (noi fefura noi). Not only does it sound like what is actually sung, but it makes some logical sense as a shorthand for numbers with many zeroes as well. ノイ is the usual reading for 1, and フェフ (with no ラ) is the usual reading for 4. Putting that together, you have 1, a variation on 4, and another 1. Note that the thousands place, where the first 1 occurs, is the fourth position from the right. Supporting this theory is another note indicating that 5100 (used elsewhere in the game) sounds like ヴィラ・フェフラ・ノイ・トレル. 5 is ヴィラ, there's that フェフラ again, and 3 is ドリ. If we assume that トリル is a mishearing of ドリラ, then we have a clear pattern: Add ラ to a number n to mean the nth digit from the right. Assuming this holds up, 1,000,000 could be read ノイ・ヘプトラ (since ヘプト = 7), and so on. It's comparable to writing 14z1 for 1001, 17z for 1,000,000, and so on. Or 1x104 + 1 and 1x107, to use an actual standard.

My best guess at a literal translation is, "Rhaplanca sings (wishing prosperity to all, for the sake of the Implanta, earnestly, and sadly) while crying and wishing (wishing prosperity to all, earnestly, and sadly), and entrusting (wishing prosperity to all, and earnestly) atonement and hope unto the thousand-and-first Implanta (and I feel sad or uneasy)."

xN rre harr f.s. tes maoh ess ouvyu sechel/.

"xN rre harr f.s. tes maoh ess ouvyu sechel/.", glossed as 刻を忘却せし廃墟の街に立ち 少女ラプランカはマオへと囁いた ("Standing in a ruined town that time forgot, the girl Rhaplanca muttered unto Maoh"). Here's the name of the other major character in the story, Maoh. Also of note is that the verb "f.s." lacks any emotive vowels. This normally happens when a verb is being used as a noun, but that doesn't appear to be the case here. Perhaps her action is devoid of emotion?

My best guess at a literal translation is, "In the ruins of a city, she whispered to Maoh (and I am calm about it)."

Nothing too remarkable here, but since it's now a quotation, the speaker is now Rhaplanca. The anger that "O" normally represents is probably more specifically bitterness here.

Why is it that "Rhaplanca" and "Maoh" are capitalized here but not in various other lines? Anyway, there are some compound actions here, but nothing too unusual, unless you count the almost complete lack of emotive vowels.

This one is particularly tricky because a significant portion of the sentence doesn't appear in the dictionary. If I had to guess, I'd say based on the given translation that "j.d.r." means roughly "pass judgment". And "za"...? Based on how it's used both here and a few lines later, I'm guessing it indicates a causative verb (meaning "allows to happen" or "makes happen").

My best guess at a literal translation is, "Please stop letting yourself (=Rhaplanca) judge only by human malice, I (=Maoh) ask this with concern for you."

After the messy previous line, this one is refreshingly simple.

The only potentially tricky things here are who's feeling what and which way the verb is pointed. Well, those and the pronunciation of "1000". ノイ・フェフラ seems most likely given that 1001 was (probably) ノイ・フェフラ・ノイ.
