Armors and attempted translations from...

聖剣伝説2

Here's the armor (headgear and armlets included) list, in the order the game stores them. Graphics found on the (now defunct) Japanese icon site 16x16 (previously found at http://finefeather.cool.ne.jp/1616), saving me the trouble of extracting them myself. A number of these armors are named after various enemies, leading to naming differences that really have nothing to do with the equipment itself.

The ochu of Final Fantasy and related games is likely named and modeled after the otyugh of Dungeons and Dragons, a three-legged tentacled underground aberration that prefers to feed on offal and other foul substances. Thanks to kahran042 for pointing this out. As with Moogles, the popularized term may not be quite accurate, but it's familiar enough as this point that I'd just as soon leave it as-is other than noting the probable reference.

Technical Stuff:

Armor attribute data is found in 10-byte records starting at offset 0x1040D0 in the Japanese ROM. Names are stored elsewhere.

Stat Bonuses (byte 0)

The known bits increase the corresponding character stats by 5 when equipped.

Defense (byte 1)

Total defense is defense from all armors worn plus Vitality. Defense reduces damage taken from physical attacks, so the more, the better.

Evasion (byte 2)

Total evasion is evasion from all armors worn plus Agility / 4. Though the code allows for each piece of equipment to have its own value, all headgear uses 23, all body armor uses 37, and all accessories use 15, so a fully equipped character will have 75 evasion from equipment, regardless of the equipment (note that, while each None is techically equipment as far as the game data is concerned, they don't count and unsurprisingly provide zero evasion).

In addition to increasing the chance to dodge, high evasion also reduces both the chance of defensive duds and the penalty for them.

This one's less obvious than dud hits, but it makes low evasion highly dangerous. According to a post by HHS on the TASVideos discussion board, a defensive dud occurs roughly (99 - evasion)% of the time and reduces effective defense power to evasion/80 of its actual value, with no random variation (normal defends use full defense plus an additional random bonus from 0% to 6.25%).

The good news is that with reasonable (around 80 to 85) evasion, both formulas are roughly equal. The bad news is that with low evasion, you're going to get pounded. With just body armor, plus a bit from agility, evasion starts somewhere around 40%, which means that around three hits out of five ignore half of your defense power. Adding a hat from there raises evasion to 63%, so that lets around 36% of hits bypass close to a quarter (21.25%) of your defense. While still not good, that's much improved. Adding an accessory to that boosts evasion to 78%, resulting in about a 21% chance that 2.5% of your defense is ignored, so at this point the difference is basically negligible. The lesson here is to always use a full set of equipment whenever possible.

Interestingly, these defensive "duds" actually get better than normal defense, though increasingly uncommon, if your evasion is high enough. For example, with 80 Agility and a full set of gear, evasion climbs to 95, leaving you with around a 4% chance of getting an effective 18.75% bonus to defense.

Magic Defense (byte 3)

Total magic defense is magic defense from all armors worn plus Spirit. Magic defense reduces damage taken from magical attacks, so the more, the better.

Magic Evade (byte 4)

It doesn't appear on the status screen, but total magic evade is magic evade from all armors worn plus Spirit / 4. Though the code allows for each piece of equipment to have its own value, all headgear uses 23, all body armor uses 15, and all accessories use 37, so a fully equipped character will have 75 magic evade from equipment, regardless of the equipment (note that, while each None is techically equipment as far as the game data is concerned, they don't count and unsurprisingly provide zero magic evade).

Magic attacks always seem to hit, but high magic evasion reduces both the chance of defensive duds and the penalty for them.

Again according to HHS, defensive duds against magic attacks work just like defensive duds against physical attacks, except that we're dealing with magic evade and magic defense instead of evasion and defense.

The notes about equipment also apply, except that body armor and accessories are switched. This means that characters with only body armor will tend to get torn to shreds by magic attacks. Take The Boy at low levels with just body armor. His low Spirit combined with the low magic evade of body armor mean he'll start with a mere 16% magic evade. As a result, 83% of magic attacks against him will ignore 80% of his magic defense... not that he's likely to have much to begin with. Once again, always use a full set of equipment whenever possible.

Who Can Equip (byte 5)

Each bit that is set allows the corresponding character to wear the equipment.

Unknown (byte 6)

Always 0x00.

Status Prevention (bytes 7 and 8)

Determines which status effects, if any, the equipment prevents.

Unknown (byte 9)

Always 0x00.

Presumably one of the unused bytes is meant for elemental affinities. As for the other... maybe racial bonuses like in FF4?
