Monster names and attempted translations from...

Chrono Trigger

These are dumped straight from the ROMs.

Warning: May contain spoilers

There are plenty of monster guides, so I doubt I'll ever include full information here, but I have yet to find one that gives details about what defenses each monster has. And so, this list now includes hit points, elemental affinities, physical and magical defense, certain special flags, and also level for good measure. Vulnerabilities (anything that makes the monster take more than typical damage) will be emphasized with bold green, while strengths (anything that lets the monster take relatively reduced damage) will be highlighted with italic red.

Names are listed, from top to bottom, in my usual ordering of Japanese name first, my translation attempt second, and the official English SNES version last. Elemental affinities indicate how damage from each trait will be scaled when applied to this monster (200% = double damage, -100% = full absorption, etc.), rounded to the nearest whole percentage (actual values are always either 0 or in the form 4/x, where x is an integer that is most often 4). 154 of 256 entries have the typical physical defense (pDef) of 127, out of a 255 maximum. 170 of 256 entries have the typical magic defense (mDef) of 50, out of a 100 maximum.

Note that magic damage reduction works on a scale of 0 to 102.4, so even enemies with the maximum of 100 magic defense are not completely immune.

Any enemy that is a magical creature takes extra damage from certain weapons. Any enemy that has physical immunity cannot be hit by purely physical attacks (but will still take damage according to physical defense from the physical portion of magical/physical combos that hit). Any enemy that is mechanical has a chance to receive Stop status from Lucca's Plasma Gun. Evade is noted only for enemies with an unusually high value (only nine enemies have enough to make much difference; the others all have 20 or less).

Nu is also an uncommon archaic reading of the kanji 寝 (sleep), as the base form of a verb equivalent to modern 寝る (neru). Maybe there's a connection, since they always seem to be dozing off.

If you visit the sewers as early as possible, magic attacks are limited to Crono's Wind Scythe (unlikely to be worthwhile due to his low Magic, especially since 150 physical defense isn't much higher than 127) and Lucca's Flamethrower. Their Blaze Wheel combo deals no more damage than Flamethrower and Crono's Whirlslash independently, so Crono almost might as well just attack normally. Of course, if you wait until late in the game to come here, it's a curbstomp.

Looks like a blue Gran and Leon. Appears when the party leader is at least level 40, but below level 99. Note that physical defense is now normal, while magic defense is elevated. Magic-based (so they hit) combos with a large physical component (to take advantage of his normal defense) are the way to go at this point.

Personally, I recommend Arc Impulse. It's effective, avoids Ayla and Robo (who may very well still have low enough magic defense to be liabilities), and uses a party (Crono + Marle + Frog) that has plenty of healing available.

Looks like a pink Nu. Appears when the party leader has reached the maximum level (99). Even more than before, his defenses call for using magic-based combos with large physical components, as his high magic defense cuts magic damage to about a third as compared to a typical opponent. Frog Flare inflicts more damage than anything else as long as Frog is badly hurt, but otherwise it's little more than an amplified ★Flare, making it mediocre at best. The top reliably effective choices are Gatling Kick, Final Kick, Triple Flame Kick, Glacier Throw, Figa Tackle, Ice Tackle, and Arc Impulse.

Unused shell mode. Has the same stats as Melfikk's core, except for the drastic Water weakness, but does nothing in combat. To speculate, this may have been created at a point during development when Melfikk was simply vulnerable to Water damage directly, instead of the torso and legs losing defense when wet as they do in the final version.
