ふたりのバースディ (Our Birthday)

A Mion and Shion character song! Potential spoilers! Avoid until after Meakashi-hen (chapter 5)!

Higurashi character songs have a tendency toward lyrical dissonance. We've got that in spades here, particularly during the interlude that isn't listed in the lyrics booklet, though there's plenty of that already in the rest of the song. The music is so cheerful and energetic, but the lyrics are going on about being broken and losing what matters and more and more sadness and trouble. A number of lines are fairly direct references to disturbing story events, so watch for those too. As noted above, this song is heavy on spoilers for Meakashi-hen.

The lyrics booklet doesn't specify, but ■ = Mion and □ = Shion. It's really not that difficult to tell when listening to it, even though it's the same person singing both parts. In the interest of saving space and because I just don't like the way it looks with them, I'm omitting the parentheses the booklet puts around the symbols.

1 ...it makes a whole lot more sense if you know that Mion and Shion switched places so many times as children that when the time came to give Mion the tattoo marking her as the Sonozaki heir, they got the wrong sister. As a result, the Mion we know, who lives in Hinamizawa and has a thing for Keiichi, is the one who was born Shion, and the Shion we know, who lives in Okinomiya and fell for Satoshi, is the one who was born Mion. No one else seems to know, though, and the two of them have stepped into each other's roles permanently (except when one of them pretends to be the other again). As if they weren't confusing enough already. However, for all practical purposes, the one whom everyone knows as Mion is Mion, the one whom everyone knows as Shion is Shion, and this is how the names are used. Besides, it's more appropriate that way, since, although it's uncertain whether Mion has much in the way of M tendencies, Shion has a definite S streak even when she doesn't go crazy. And if you don't know what that means, well... suffice it to say that she can be very unpleasant.

2 ...the sources I Googled up either left it unspecified whose lines are whose in the spoken parts, or had Mion and Shion backwards except in the first exchange. I can't say whether it was an attempt to avoid spoilers or a case of just not knowing any better, but despite what Wataganshi-hen (chapter 2) makes it look like, Meakashi-hen (chapter 5) reveals the truth that it's Shion who's the deranged torturer, Mion who's locked in a cell and tormented by having to witness it all, and Shion who makes the comment about the doll to Keiichi. So why does Mion call Shion お姉さま (o-nee-sama, "big sister" with a groveling sort of tone) when Mion is the older one, and Shion normally calls Mion お姉 (o-nee, "big sister" with a more friendly and casual tone)? Aside from the obvious reasons for groveling, of course. Though only the two of them know this and normally pretend otherwise, the truth is that Shion, as explained in note 1 above, was born Mion and is in fact the older sister. So you could argue that they didn't really have Mion and Shion backwards after all, except that then it would mean they're backwards on every other line, unless you want to argue that it's because they revert to their original roles and names after everything goes to hell, but that just makes everything even more unnecessarily confusing.
