希望へ向う譚詩曲 [Ballade Leading to Hope]

The ending is... bittersweet. Not to give too much away, but it's a good thing Bravely Second happened, even if its music is largely inferior, though on the other hand the gameplay interface is noticeably improved to the extent that I find it difficult to go back to Bravely Default after getting used to it, but on the other hand Bravely Second needs follow up of its own now...

In any case, this track is arguably the most compelling composition in the entire game, and that duet...! And then at the end, the energy just keeps building and building, and just when it seems like it's settled down again...!

intro ~7 seconds (OST version; the Linked Horizon long version has an additional lead-in that lasts over a minute)
何処までもずっと続くと思ってた
日常は儚く崩れて消えた
退屈だとさえ感じて軽んじてた
幸せのその本当の意味に気付いた
doko made mo zutto tsudzuku to omotte ta
nichijou wa hakanaku kuzurete kieta
taikutsu da to sae kanjite karonjite ta
shiawase no sono hontou no imi ni kidzuita
We thought they would go on forever,
but our daily routines crumbled away like dust.
We realized the true meaning of the happiness
that we'd even scornfully thought of as tedium.
満ち足りてなかった 訳じゃなかったんだ
僕達はそれをもう一度
 取り戻そうとしたんだ
michitarite nakatta wake ja nakatta n da
boku-tachi wa sore wo mou ichido
 torimodosou to shita n da
It wasn't as though we hadn't been contented.
We were striving to retake it once again.
interlude ~22 seconds
上手くやれたと思ったことでさえ
誰かの悲しみを知れば無力で
幾度も困難にぶつかっては立ち止まり
目的のその本当の意味に気付いた
umaku yareta to omotta koto de sae
dare ka no kanashimi wo shireba muryoku de
ikudo mo konnan ni butsukatte wa tachidomari
mokuteki no sono hontou no imi ni kidzuita
Even when we think we've done well,
we find out about someone's sorrow and are powerless.
In running into so many difficulties and grinding to a halt,
we realized the true meaning of having a purpose.
諦める事に慣れた 訳じゃなかったんだ
僕達はそれにもう一度
 立ち向かおうとしたんだ
akirameru koto ni nareta wake ja nakatta n da
boku-tachi wa sore ni mou ichido
 tachimukaou to shita n da
It wasn't as though we were used to giving up.
We were striving to take a stand once again.
brief interlude, duet begins
鎖された暗闇の中 希望1を感じたんだ
君の瞳に 言葉に 後ろ姿に
喪う為だけに 生まれた訳じゃないと
思えたのは 信じられたのは
 そう 君がいたからさ
tozasareta yami no naka hikari1 wo kanjita n da
kimi no me ni kotoba ni ushiro sugata ni
ushinau tame dake ni umareta wake ja nai to
omoeta no wa shinjirareta no wa
sou kimi ga ita kara sa
Locked in darkness, I sensed a light of hope1,
in your eyes, in your words, in seeing you from behind.
We weren't born just so that we could face loss.
I was able to think that way, to believe it,
 yes, because you were there.
interlude ~41 seconds
凍りついた季節2の中 未来3を感じたんだ
君の手に 笑顔に 戦う姿に
嗚呼 別れる為だけに 出逢った訳じゃないと
思えたのは 信じられたのは
 そう 君がいたから
kooritsuita toki2 no naka ashita3 wo kanjita n da
kimi no te ni egao ni tatakau sugata ni
aa wakareru tame dake ni deatta wake ja nai to
omoeta no wa shinjirareta no wa
 sou kimi ga ita kara
In a frozen time2, I sensed a future3,
in your hands, in your smile, in seeing you fight.
Ah, we didn't meet just so that we could part ways.
I was able to think that way, to believe it,
 yes, because you were there.
何の為 誰の為 戦えばいい?
 遠過ぎて 近過ぎて 時に見失う
傷ついても 裏切られても
 世界を知る痛みを怖れないで
nan no tame, dare no tame, tatakaeba ii?
too sugite, chika sugite, toki ni miushinau
kizutsuite mo, uragirarete mo
sekai wo shiru itami wo osorenaide
For what, for whom, should we fight?
Sometimes it's too close or too far, and we lose sight of it.
Though it may mean hurt or betrayal,
don't fear the pain of knowing the world.
interlude ~25 seconds, with "bravely default" sung twice
真っ直ぐに 唯 真っ直ぐに 光へ向う
嗚呼 倒れても また 倒れても
 何度でも立ち上がる

KIMI to tsumuida BARADDO4——
We head straight, just head straight toward the light.
Aah, though we may fall and fall again,
we'll just keep getting back up every time.
Such is the ballade I have woven with you.

closing ~18 seconds, including a final orchestral blast after what seems to be the end

1 The kanji 希望 (hope) are given the reading ひかり (light).

2 The kanji 季節 (season) are given the reading とき (time).

3 The kanji 未来 (future) are given the reading あした (tomorrow).

4 The kanji 譚詩曲 (ballade) are given the reading バラッド (ballade). And no, that's not the same thing as a ballad. Yes, I had to look it up.
