Factory Ruins in Wonderland | The Factory Ruins

不思議の国 is the standard translation of "wonderland", such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland becoming 不思議の国のアリス. |
|||
A.D. 2300 Factory Ruins | Factory
The factory is in surprisingly good condition. Everything is clean and intact, and it even seems to be operational. (Factory Ruins) plays inside. Robo disables the perimiter security, allowing entry to the main facility. |
|||
Robo: Security system 00 unlocked. | Robo: Override Security System 00.
This removes a laser barrier blocking entry, but also causes an Acid to drop from the ceiling and attack. Monsters here include the Bug already seen, Acid, Alkali (Alkaline), Debugger, and Version 3.0 (Proto 3). Version 3.0 has a slight Dark weakness, while Debugger has a slight Aether weakness but resists Fire. Alkali and especially Acid have very high defenses, but their health is so low it hardly matters. Just don't let an Acid and an Alkali meet if you can help it. Each of the two is also weak against Aether, but strongly resists the other three elements. Crono's Wind Scythe, though relatively weak, should kill them dead. In combat, Robo uses various robotic arms as weapons. He starts with two skills, but unlike anyone else so far, doesn't stop there, instead learning a third very quickly and continuing to learn more after that. He also learns combo moves with the others, as usual. Though he has no element symbol on his status screen, he does have a 20% innate resistance to Dark attacks. As far as stats go, Robo has the highest hit points and stamina of any character, while his power is the highest after level 30 and a close second before that. However, he also has the lowest magic points, evasion, and magic defense, and his magic power is almost as low as Crono's. Furthermore, he's tied with Lucca as the slowest character, though, also like her, his hit rate is comparatively high. A note on the wall indicates the factory layout in general terms. |

Left - Lab area Right - Factory area Caution! Do not turn off the conveyor belt in the factory. The security system will activate and you'll be in danger. |
|
We'll start with the factory area. Search the undisplayed area behind a door to find a Middle Ether, climb down one ladder to find Robin's Bow, and then get ready to face the conveyor belt. The party must run against the flow of the belt, but contacting any of the robots on it will prompt a crane to dump them on a different belt and into a series of battles. Fortunately, after the battles, they end up where they needed to reach anyway. If attempting to avoid the crane, note that the robots come in two repeating sets of pairs, and that the distance between the sets is different. Only the largest gap leaves enough time to reach some of the exit points. That's what the memo means about interrupting the flow of the conveyor belt. You can't turn it off at all, making the English version a red herring. Beyond the conveyor belt, one room has a terminal with codes for the crane... |
|||
Crane activation codes: Pattern 00 ...... X A Pattern 01 ...... B B |
Crane control code: Code 00... ...X A Code 01... ...B B |
|
...though checking the display wakes the robots in the wall, perhaps unsurprisingly. Through another room are the crane controls. |
|||
Activating the crane. Combine two from the four buttons A, B, X, Y, and press them in turn. Please input after the chime. |
To use the crane, enter any two of these letters, A B X Y, after the beep. |
|
Each of the two combinations, which may be entered in either order, removes a barrel that was blocking the way. With them removed, the party can access another room, containing a Thunderclap Sword and another informational display. |
|||
ホンヤク X A B Y …… |
TOP PRIORITY GUARD DOOR LOCK CODE ...... Z A B I E ZABIE...... TRANSLATION X A B Y ...... |
Last defense lock code named "ZABIE."
Translation...XABY. That's X A B Y. |
|
Urk. The door lock code is (phonetically) ザ ビ ィ, and then the next page of text explains that ザビィ translates to X A B Y in actual buttons. The English version would have done better to have put spaces in the first "XABY" and left the rest off, instead of coming across as condescending by the needless repetition. With that information acquired, it's time to head to the research area. Beating a mixed Acid and Alkali group past a save point activates the display, which... |
|||
Hatch open. | Open hatch.
...opens a hatch leading down. The elevator can also go further down, but security lasers block off everything interesting from that direction. A control room contains a Hammer Arm and Titanium Vest, along with yet another display. Robo fiddles with it. |
|||
Robo: Power systems... |
Robo: All systems down. |
|
Perhaps predictably, that triggers a swarm of Acid and Alkali to drop from the ceiling. However, turning the lasers off allows access to more areas, including another display near a chest with a Plasma Gun. |
|||
: The Zabie door lock system is active. |
Door lock system "Zabie" operational. Enter password. |
|
Using the password from the factory area opens the door. However, unlike the code for the passages in Arris Dome, you don't need to have read the message explaining the code before you can open the door. Passing through, the party reaches a large pillar. Crono flips the rather prominent switch on it. "Critical Moment" starts playing, and alarms go off everywhere. |
|||
Robo: Emergency situation! |
Robo: Emergency! |
|
The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x3F. As they run out, several massive partitions start closing. Robo runs forward to hold the last one open. |
|||
Robo: HURRY! |
Robo: Hurry! |
|
The barrier slams shut as they get through, throwing Robo across the room, but, after venting excess heat, he's fine. Unfortunately, the elevator doesn't work now. |
|||
EMERGENCY. ELEVATOR NOT OPERABLE. |
Emergency elevator shut off.
It's not an emergency elevator. They're meant to be two separate thoughts. There is an emergency, and (therefore) the elevator isn't running. Oddly, the elevator message on the next floor pulls its message from a different memory location, and this one has a different, more correct, translation: |
|||
EMERGENCY. ELEVATOR NOT OPERABLE. |
Emergency! Elevators disabled. |
|
It's a mystery why both instances don't just reference the same text. Using the manual access hatches, the party continues until they meet six robots that look like Robo in blue. The music and alarms stop. |
|||

Robo: Th...these are my friends!
He runs up to greet, and bow to, them. |

Robo: R-64Y, R-67Y, R-69Y! |
Robo: R-64Y, R-67Y, and R-69Y! |
|
As he's continuing to bow and greet, the apparent leader punches him across the room. |
|||
| Robo: Wh-what... | Robo: Wh, what are you doing?!

"At the Bottom of Night" fades in. |

R-64Y: BE GONE, ACCURSED |
R-64Y: You shame us! |

They toss him into their midst and beat up on him. |

Marle and Lucca each have lines during this scene. |
|||
Marle: Robo! |
Marle: Robo! |
|
| Lucca: W-why you...! | Lucca: Wh, what are you doing!
If Crono tries interfering, he just gets knocked back, and Robo protests... |
|||
Robo: P-please stop... |
Robo: No, stop! |
|
Eventually, Robo staggers to the side, but the other robots keep beating him up. |
|||
Robo: PLEASE stop. |
Robo: Please stop. |
|
Marle: Saying that's not helping! |
Marle: You'll break down!
| Lucca: You'll die! | Lucca: But they'll destroy you!
Eventually, Robo stops moving completely. The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x40. One of the other robots tosses him into a duct in the wall. Whichever character is with Crono runs over to look. The music stops. |
|||
| : Robo! | Robo! | |

Marle: You cocky boxes of bolts! |
|
Lucca: The ones to be disposed of... |
Lucca: No! |
|
And the fight starts. They're helpfully lined up so that Whirlslash works very well, but avoid Blaze Wheel since they resist Fire. The slight weakness to Aether doesn't make Wind Scythe worthwhile. Also be aware that they fight meaner once they're weakened up. The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x42. |
|||
| : Robo! | Robo! | |
| : He's stuck!! | They trashed him!
Marle or Lucca drags Robo out of the duct. He still isn't moving. |
|||
| Marle: Waah! What'll we do? |
Marle: Wahh...! |
|
| Lucca: How awful... |
Lucca: He's in bad shape... |
|
So they start dragging, as Robo is a bit heavy to carry. |
|||
A.D. 2300 Promethe Dome | Proto Dome
The door is now open. Lucca gets to work on Robo right away. Marle and Crono can't really do anything, so they rest. "At the Bottom of Night" plays. |

Screen and music fade out. When the scene fades back in, everyone is standing, and "Robo's Theme" plays. |
|||
| Robo: Good MORNING. | Robo: Good morning.

Robo: There is nothing left for me |

Lucca: Let's go! |
Lucca: Then let's go! |

The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x45. They walk into the back room. It's a bit cleaner, and there's the now-familiar sight of a dormant Gate. "Fanfare 1" plays. |
|||
| Lucca: Now! Here we go!! | Lucca: Hang on to your shorts!
The Gate opens and they step inside, but it sparks, flashes, and makes stranger noises than usual as it closes. |
|||
Unknown | |||
The party lands in one of three pillars of light in an odd sort of room that seems to have nothingness beyond it. 2-13 時の最果て (The Farthest Reaches of Time), a rather dreamlike tune, plays here. |
|||
| Robo: Where is THIS? | Robo: Where are we?
The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x48. Robo moves particularly awkwardly here, no doubt because the game only knows how to handle a party size of up to three properly. Check the menu; only Crono, Marle, and Lucca are active members. As a result, Robo functions as an NPC and doesn't follow along as smoothly as usual. They walk to a second room, connected by a walkway. This one has a door on one side, a staircase to nowhere on another, healing and save points, a strange object in the corner, and an old man with a cane and trench coat dozing against an old-style streetlamp in the middle of the room. The party tries talking to him. |
|||
| Old Man: Dear me, visitors again... | OLD MAN: Ah, more guests...!

I never quite understood how that makes sense. Can't they all travel together as long as no more than three use the same Gate at once? Just have a few people go through at a time and regroup on the other side...? Regardless, that's the in-universe excuse for limiting the party size. |

The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x49, starting the next chapter. |

Even leaving aside the fact that the party is trying to avert this future entirely, their raid on the factory is unlikely to have any long-reaching effects anyway. The security may be compromised, but it can be fixed, and with the humans native to this time staying huddled fearfully in their domes, it's doubtful that anyone would attempt to intrude even if the security were shut down entirely. Robo's decision to join the party will aid in their quest, but has yet to affect anything directly. Similarly, the Farthest Reaches of Time is a useful place, if that's the right word for it, but doesn't affect anything directly. There's still no historical impact. |
