A.D. 1000 Bosch's Hut | Melchior's Hut
The music fades as Bosch begins to speak. |
|||
Bosch: Hey, it's you guys. |
MELCHIOR: You're back again? |
|
Lucca interrogates him if present, otherwise Marle does. |
|||
Lucca: Why would your name be |
Lucca: Why would your name be |
|
| Marle: Why's your name on this sword? |
Marle: Why would YOUR name be on |
|
Bosch turns away. (Corridors of Time) begins to play. |
|||
Bosch: ...... |
MELCHIOR: ... |
|
He turns back to face them again. |
|||
Bosch: But you didn't come visit |
MELCHIOR: You do want to hear this |
|
The same character continues. |
|||
Lucca: Oh, right! The Grandleon! |
Lucca: Of course! |
|
Marle: Oh, right! The Grandleon! |
Marle: Yes! |
|
The above exchange never made sense to me until I saw it in Japanese. In the NA version, he asks if they want to hear the story, they apparently agree that they want him to tell it, and then he says nothing more on the topic and no one seems to care. However, in the original, he's actually changing the subject by asking whether they had another reason for coming in the first place. Marle and Lucca aren't so much agreeing (like "Of course!" and "Yes!" in the NA version) as they are exclaiming "Oh, that's right, I almost forgot we came here to get this thing fixed!" in mild shock. |
|||
Bosch: If I could even now get the |
MELCHIOR: Hmmmm... |
|
ドリストーンっちゅう原石 would be a slurring of ドリストーンという原石, which just means "an ore called Dreamstone". The music begins to fade out. |
|||
Robo responds if present, otherwise Marle does. |
|||
Robo: Dreamstone... |
Robo: Dreamstone...? |
|
Marle: Dreamstone? |
Marle: Dreamstone? |
|
Bosch: I doubt it's around any more. |
MELCHIOR: You can't find it anymore. |
|
"Memories of Greenery" resumes playing. |
|||
Bosch: Well, I don't expect it's possible, but if |
MELCHIOR: I doubt that you'll ever find |

Since time seems to be the biggest problem, Crono and the others try going where time doesn't matter... |

The Farthest Reaches of Time | The End of Time
The old man is still here, leaning on the streetlamp, as usual. Crono tries talking to him. |

OLD MAN: Dreamstone?... |

That 65 million B.C. gate is suddenly looking useful... |
|||
65 million B.C. Mystery Mountain | Mystic Mts
It's about what you'd except from a prehistoric mountain, with rocky cliffs, overgrown unidentifiable foliage, and so on. 2-18 原始の山 (Primeval Mountain) plays. Just to make things interesting, the Gate opens on the side of a sheer cliff. Crono and the others fall to the ground, where a bunch of anthropomorphic lizards, or possibly dinosaurs, are running around. "Critical Moment" starts playing. While you can go through the Gate before this, nothing of interest happens. These creatures never appear, the village chief is nowhere to be found, and the trading hut won't do business without the chief's approval. It's still possible to go fight things for experience, though. |
|||
Both non-Crono characters speak, in the order listed. |
|||
| Lucca: Gr-green scaley skin! | Lucca: They're all green and scaly!
| Marle: Wh-what are these things!? | Marle: Wh...what are those?
Robo: Midway between human and dinosaur... |
Robo: Half human, half dinosaur... |
|
The Dinomen surround the party and attack, moving like they've had waaay too much sugar and can't sit still. They have tough skins, but don't take magic well. Furthermore, any Aether attack except Wind Slash will stun them and lower their defense, though they have no particular weakness to the damage itself. The type of Dinoman that appears here is monster ID 1. Physical attacks against them inflict less than half of typical damage unless they're stunned, while magic attacks inflict over a third more than usual. Another, larger group closes in after the first is beaten. |
|||
Lucca and Marle each react if present, in that order if both are. |
|||
| Lucca: There's too many! | Lucca: We're outnumbered!
| Marle: What'll we do, Crono!? | Marle: What should we do, |
|
Suddenly, a cavewoman with curly blonde hair and wearing very little except for a... scarf-like... something... that almost looks like a tail... shows up and plows through the pack of Dinomen, killing about half of them. (Ayla's Theme) plays. |
|||
Everyone watching, except of course Crono, says something about her. |
|||
| Marle: Whoa, so strong! | Marle: Goodness! |
|
| Lucca: Wh-what's WITH that woman? | Lucca: Who IS that woman?!
Robo: Her combat prowess far |
Robo: Her fighting capabilities far |
|
Several surviving Dinomen turn back toward Crono as the woman leaves. |
|||
Marle reacts if present, otherwise Robo does. |
|||
| Marle: The rest are coming this way! | Marle: Uh oh...they're coming our |
|
Robo: It APPEARS they have changed |
Robo: Now they're after us!
Then the survivors attack, but they're no worse than last time. Soon after they fall, the woman comes back. She still seems ready for a fight. |
|||
Marle speaks if present, otherwise Lucca does. Robo follows up either way, if present. |
|||
| Marle: Wh-what... | Marle: Wh...what do you want?
| Lucca: Wh-what...! | Lucca: What the...!
Robo: We MUST not EXCITE her. |
Robo: Do not upset her. |
|
The woman changes stance, and looks ready to attack. |
|||
Marle reacts if present, otherwise Lucca does. |
|||
| Marle: Eeek! | Marle: Ack!
| Lucca: Y-you wanna fight!? | Lucca: We're not looking for a |
|
The woman suddenly charges Crono, pinning him against the cliff with apparent ease. |
|||
| : Crono! | Crono! | |
Robo has a line in the game data that fits here, but I can't get him to actually say it in-game: |
|||
Robo: Her capacity for abrupt movement |
Robo: Her...expressive abilities are |
|
The woman steps back and fluffs her hair. She seems to have calmed down. "Primeval Mountain" resumes playing. |
|||
Woman: You strong. |
Woman: You strong. |
|
あたい is not a common word, but is a first-person pronoun, equivalent to "I", "me", etc. From what I've been able to find out, it's feminine, but tough. In the JP version, the cavemen all refer to Crono by the first two kana in whatever name the player chose for him back at the beginning of the game. Unfortunately, the NA version doesn't use a nickname at all, even though the text in the ROM is still set up to handle it. Time to name that cavewoman... which of course means she joins the party later. |
|||
Ayla: Called Ayla. |
Ayla: Me Ayla. |
|
That's an English long 'a' sound like in "eight", not a long 'i' like in "eye". Just so you know. |
|||
Marle and Lucca each speak if present, in that order if both are here. |
|||
| Marle: G-get away from her, Crono! | Marle: Get away from her, |
|
Lucca: You've been found worthy |
Lucca: I think she likes you, |
|
This is messier than I thought... 気に入る means (approximately) to be pleased with, but it's in passive form, and on top of that it's エイラのに and not エイラに, which is what I'd expect. The only way the エイラのに works grammatically is with the …のものとして (in a role as something of...) variant of のに, so it's something like "as Ayla's". In short, she means Ayla has decided Crono's worth having. |
|||
Ayla: Yous strong too. |
Ayla: You strong too. |
|
If present, Marle giggles. |
|||
| Marle: Oh, is THAT how it is? | Marle: Oh, brother...
If present, Lucca looks embarrased, or something. |
|||
| Lucca: I d-don't swing that way! | Lucca: Where have they been |
|
If the game had been translated more recently, the censors might have let this joke live. Maybe. |
|||
If Robo is present, Ayla takes several good looks at him. |
|||
| Robo: Wh-what MIGHT it BE? | Robo: Y, yes?
Due to an oddity in how it's scripted, the above line will only appear if Lucca is also present. |
|||
Ayla: You weird guy. |
Ayla: You different, but strong |
|
Robo: It is BECAUSE I AM a robot, |
Robo: It's because I'm a robot.
Ayla: Robot? What that? |
Ayla: "Rawboot?" What that? |
|
"Rawboot"? She's prehistoric, not deaf. There's no way she could muck up the pronunciation that badly. Try "row bought" if you must play with it. |
|||
Robo: It IS a humanoid machine |
Robo: It's a machine that looks like |
|
Ayla: What you say? |
Ayla: What you say?! |
|
Ayla: What you say!! CATS: You have no chance to survive make your time. ...what? |
|||
| Ayla: Where Cros come from? | Ayla: Crono, where from?
Ayla's primitive speech gives me an excuse to translate 達 as something short and simple for a change. Basically, it's a way to refer to a group by a representative member. I think the closest English comes to matching it is "and the other(s)", and that's not nearly as concise. It's a pluralizer that's more versatile than adding 's'! Stupid English. |
|||
Marle speaks if present, and Robo speaks if present, in that order if both are. |
|||
Marle: U-umm, I wonder how we |
Marle: Uh, how can we explain?
Robo: It IS impossible to explain it so |
Robo: It is beyond her grasp.
Robo's probably right, but even so, Lucca tries explaining if present, otherwise Marle does. |
|||
Lucca: We came from tomorrow's tomorrow's |
Lucca: We're from way after the |
|
Marle: We came from a waaay, waaay, |
Marle: We're from many days |
|
Ayla: Ha ha ha! You funny. |
Ayla: Ha ha, you funny. |
|
If present, Lucca admits defeat. |
|||
| Lucca: This's hopeless. | Lucca: It's no use...
Ayla: Yous come village! |
Ayla: Come to village! |
|
If present, Lucca tries to politely decline, otherwise Marle does. |
|||
Lucca: We would really love to |
Lucca: We'd love to go, but we've |
|
Marle: I appreciate the sentiment, |
Marle: Thank you but we can't. |
|
Ayla: Stone? Lots of stone. |
Ayla: Stone? |
|
Ayla: Come, Ioka Village this way. |
Ayla: Crono come, Ioka Village this way.
The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x6F. Disabling graphics layer 1 in an emulator shows a treasure chest tile near the stream, but it's completely non-interactive. Possibly the unused Darkness Katana was meant to have gone here, though given its strength, probably not. Ayla runs off, and Crono has little choice but to follow. She takes to the heights, where the others can't reach, as "Ayla's Theme" starts playing again. Crono tries to keep up, but the gorge they have to run though is full of monsters, and she's out of sight before long. The Marmo (Kilwala) and Tatta (Runner) appear here. As turns out to be typical of this era, the mammalian Marmo resists magic but has no more physical defense than is typical, while the reptilian Tatta has elevated physical defense but inferior magic defense. If Crono and the others take out the group of monsters nearest the exit, Ayla comes back to see what's taking so long. |
|||
| Ayla: Cro slow slow! | Ayla: Crono too slow!
Ayla: Come, Ioka Village this way. |
Ayla: Crono come, Ioka Village this way.
Crono follows Ayla off the mountain. |
|||
65 million B.C. Ioka Village | Ioka Village
(Rhythm of Wind, Sky, and Earth), which is entirely basic but fairly intricate percussion, plays on the 65 million B.C. world map. Crono and the others find several tents and a large gathering area not far from the mountain. Ayla is alone inside the chieftain's tent, which is decorated with bear pelts, antlers, clay jars, and similar things. |
|||
Ayla: Cro here? |
Ayla: Good, Crono come. |
|
Night comes. Ayla and Crono's group stand in front of a group of villagers in the gathering area. Torches and a large fire provide light. There is a variety of fish and less identifiable food, large amounts of some kind of drink, and musicians and dancers. The alternate ending "The Unknown Past" is no longer available after this, since the end boss won't be accessible for a while. |
|||
Ayla: Everyone listen! |
Ayla: Listen all! |
|
{char2} and {char3} above stand for the names of the second and third party members. |
|||
| All: Uhohohhhh!! | All: Unngaaa!
| Ayla: Now! We dance Bobonga!! | Ayla: Now, we dance!
The villagers start dancing and playing music: 2-21 燃えよ! Bobonga!). Crono and the others roam around the party. |
|||
Ayla: Come on, Cro too, drink, eat, |
Ayla: Crono, eat, sing, dance!
Ayla uses a rude word for "eat" here. I guess that's not really surprising. |
|||
Crono can talk to whichever characters are here, and apparently needs to at several points during the party for events to advance. |
|||
Marle: They've gone to all this trouble, |
Marle: C'mon Crono, let's party!
| Lucca: I give up... | Lucca: They're twisting my arm!
Robo: I do not feel that this IS a situation |
Robo: This is no time to celebrate!
One villager stands off to the side by himself, away from the festivities. |
|||
Kino: Yous strangers... |
Kino: You outsiders... |
|
A bit later... Marle (if present) is chatting with Ayla, and everyone (even Robo) seems to be a bit drunk... |
|||
Marle: I'm kinda starting to feel |
Marle: This is fantastic!
| Lucca: *hic*... | Lucca: Bur...rrp!
Robo: Th-this fluid... |
Robo: What an unpleasant |
|
Ayla: Drinking? Cro! |
Ayla: Crono you try?! |
|
Ayla: Aylas fighting Dinomen. |
Ayla: Ayla fight Reptites. |
|
Ayla: Ioka village everyone fight. |
Ayla: All in Ioka village fight. |
|
Ayla: Well, enough. |
Ayla: Enough. |
|
A bit later... Marle has moved over by the dancers and Lucca seems more unstable, while Robo just says the same thing as before. |
|||
Marle: I'm gunna dansh too |
Marle: I want to dance, too! |
|
Yes, you can actually dance with her, though it's predictably awkward. |
|||
Lucca: Ahh! |
Lucca: Yumm. |
|
They're getting too drunk to talk clearly, Lucca especially... |
|||
Eventually, Ayla will pull out a chunk of stone that glows red... |
|||
Ayla: Oh yeah, Cro. |
Ayla: Crono, you look for red |
|
Ayla: Bring much much sake! |
Ayla: Bring plenty soup! |
|
Crono and Ayla sit by large dishes of sake (or "soup" for the squeamish). Villagers stand nearby to keep score and, presumably, refill the bowls. |
|||
Ayla: Then we start. |
Ayla: We start now. |
|
Crono and Ayla drink. And drink. And drink. If Crono does well enough, Ayla eventually gives in. |
|||
Ayla: *bwaaah*...! |
Ayla: Burp! |
|
"Kanpai!" is a toast, or something you say when drinking, sort of like "Cheers!" The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x72. The scene fades out... Crono wakes in the village square the next morning to find that the villagers have gone home, but there are odd footprints everywhere. |
|||
Crono wakes the other two up, in this order... |
|||
Robo: G-good MORNING... |
Robo: G...good morning. |
|
Lucca: Unngh... ow ow ow... |
Lucca: Phew... |
|
Marle: Morning, Crono. |
Marle: Morning Crono! |
|
Crono looks around at the footprints. Lucca reacts if present, otherwise Marle does... |
|||
Lucca: H-hold on, what the! |
Lucca: Hey! |
|
| Lucca: It-it's gone! |
Lucca: It's gone! |
|
Lucca: Th-th-the Gate Holder |
Lucca: The Gate Key's been taken! |
|
| Marle: Wh-what? These footprints! |
Marle: Wh...who made these |
|
| Marle: It-it's not here! |
Marle: It, it's gone! |
|
Marle: This is awful! The Gate Holder |
Marle: Oh no! |
|
Lucca, if present, expands on the problem, otherwise Robo does. |
|||
Lucca: Whoever made these |
Lucca: These prints were left by |
|
Robo: We can be FAIRLY certain that |
Robo: Whomever left these prints |
|
...and finally, whoever noticed the missing item suggests a plan of action. |
|||
Lucca: Th-this is no laughing matter! |
Lucca: This isn't funny! |
|
Marle: Let's try talking it over with |
Marle: Crono! |
|
The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x75. Crono and the others go to Ayla's tent. She's still asleep, and... |
|||
| Ayla: *snooore*, *snkkkkh*! | Ayla: Snort...zzzz...zzzz...
...snoring loudly. Crono manages to get her up, and "Ayla's Theme" starts playing. |
|||
Ayla: Nh... |
Ayla: Huh... |
|
Lucca makes the request if she's around, otherwise Marle does. |
|||
Lucca: Sorry to bother you when you're hung |
Lucca: Sorry to wake you, but |

Marle: Sorry to bother you when you're |
Marle: We'd let you sleep, but a |

Ayla: Wh-what? Dino... |
Ayla: Wh, what? |
|
Ayla joins the group here, and the player picks the third party member. You can now use the furs in Ayla's hut for a free rest at any time. The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0x78, starting the next chapter. |
|||
Befriending Ayla will come in handy, but history doesn't seem to have been meaningfully impacted at this point. That missing Gate Holder could be a problem, though... |
