Armors and attempted translations from...

Final Fantasy IV

Here's the armor portion of the item list. Everything appears in the order the game stores them internally. Items are briefly explained as needed.

Whether an item can be equipped is handled by "class" rather than by character. While there are two different White Mage classes internally, they have identical equipment sets, so there's no need to distinguish between them here. And to keep things briefer, I'll be using these shorthands for common values:

Items tagged as "metal" inflict a Paralysis-like effect on characters if equipped during a certain part of the story. The flag has no other known effects.

Warning: May contain spoilers

Armors

Empty

Defense: 0, 10% evade Used for nothing equipped? Used by: Any

Note also that wearing any shield provides the wearer with a (level / 16) bonus to EvdX in addition to the effects listed here.

Unlike the helmets and armors, no shield bears the name Hades.

Defense: 2, 24% evade, 0 MDef, 1% MEvd, metal   Used by: Dark Knight

Renamed to やみのたて ("Shield of the Dark" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType. (Demon's Shield)? Beats me.

The English and EasyType versions also make this strong against Undead.

Defense: 1, 5% evade, 1 MDef, 1% MEvd   Used by: All but Dark Knight

Renamed to ぼうし (just "Hat") in the EasyType for no apparent reason.

Defense: 2, 6% evade, 3 MDef, 3% MEvd   Used by: All but Dark Knight
Defense: 3, 7% evade, 5 MDef, 5% MEvd +3 int, +3 spr Used by: Magic users

While this Japanese term can refer to the tricorn, it more often means a hat that looks triangluar from the front, such as a pointy witch hat.

(Magic Hat) in the EasyType for no apparent reason.

Defense: 5, 8% evade, 7 MDef, 7% MEvd +5 spr, strong against Undead Used by: Magic users

(Mage's Hat) in the EasyType for no apparent reason.

Defense: 9, 12% evade, 12 MDef, 12% MEvd strong against Mages, immune to Poison, Darkness, Silence, Pig, Minikin, Toad, Stone, Incapacitated, Gradual Petrification, and Curse. Used by: All but Dark Knight

In addition to the two found in chests late in the game, Ribbons can also be found as the rare drop of the Toady Witch and Dark Magician monsters.

As usual, the Ribbon provides immunity to a wide variety of status ailments. The EasyType makes it incredible by adding Flame, Ice, and Thunder absorption.

Defense: 1, 10% evade, 1 MDef, 1% MEvd +5 str, immune to Confusion Used by: All but Dark Knight
Defense: 3, 12% evade, 1 MDef, 1% MEvd +5 str, +5 stm Used by: All but Dark Knight
(helm) くろずきん (helm) Black Hood (helm) Ninja
Defense: 5, 14% evade, 1 MDef, 1% MEvd +3 str, +3 agi, +3 stm, immune to Sleep Used by: All but Dark Knight

(Ninja's Hood) in the EasyType. As if no one would have figured out the connection otherwise.

Defense: 30 "immune" flag Used by: All but Dark Knight

Found as a rare drop from the Faze monster.

It is believed that the "immune" flag is meant to turn elemental resistances from other equipment into immunities. It's glitched, though, and not only does it not do that, it also sets base evasion to 99%. Weird, but at least it's useful.

Body
Defense: 4, 1 MDef, metal   Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer

Renamed to てつよろい (still "Iron Armor", but with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Renamed to こおりのよろい (still "Ice Armor", but with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Defense: 19, 4 MDef, 2% MEvd resists Thunder Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer

Renamed to ダイヤのよろい (still "Diamond Armor", but with more pure Japanese) in the EasyType.

Defense: 21, 7 MDef, 4% MEvd   Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer, Ninja
Defense: 23, 8 MDef, 5% MEvd resists Flame, Ice, and Thunder, strong against Dragons Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer
Defense: 25, 10 MDef, 6% MEvd +3 spr, strong against Undead, immune to Darkness, Silence, Pig, Minikin, Toad, and Berserk Used by: Paladin

For better or worse, the Crystal Mail is the only equipment in the game that provides Berserk immunity.

The tunic icon used for many of the following items does not exist in the Japanese version of the game. It was added in the English version by using one of the character codes freed up by not having to support the Japanese character set, and helps compensate for how short item names were forced to be.

(armor) ふく (tunic) Clothing (tunic) Cloth
Defense: 1, 10% evade   Used by: All but Dark Knight
(armor) かわのふく (tunic) Leather Clothes (tunic) Leather
Defense: 2, 10% evade, 1 MDef, 1% MEvd   Used by: All but Dark Knight
Defense: 3, 10% evade, 3 MDef, 3% MEvd immune to Gradual Petrification Used by: Magic users

(Magic Robe) in the EasyType for no apparent reason.

Defense: 5, 10% evade, 5 MDef, 5% MEvd +5 spr Used by: Magic users

(Mage's Robe) in the EasyType for no apparent reason.

Defense: 8, 10% evade, 7 MDef, 7% MEvd +5 int (+5 spr instead in English and EasyType) Used by: Black Magic users

What a bizarre change. Those who use Black Magic need the intelligence more than the spirit!

(armor) ひかりのローブ (tunic) Robe of Light (tunic) Sorcerer
Defense: 12, 10% evade, 9 MDef, 9% MEvd +5 int, +5 spr, resists Thunder, strong against Undead Used by: Magic users
Defense: 18, 10% evade, 10 MDef, 6% MEvd +15 spr, immune Darkness,
strong against Spirits and Undead
Used by: White Magic users
Defense: 5, 10% evade +15 str Used by: All but Dark Knight
Defense: 20, 40% evade, 5 MDef, 5% MEvd +15 str, +15 agi, +15 stm, -15 int, -15 spr,
immune to Paralysis
Used by: Summoner (child or adult), White Mage

Minerva is the Roman goddess of war (among other things). (Heroine's Dress) in the EasyType, which also lowers the stat bonuses to +10 but more than makes up for it by removing those annoying penalties.

Defense: 1, 10% evade, 1 MDef immune to Sleep Used by: All but Dark Knight

Renamed to しゅうじんふく (still "Prison Clothes") in the EasyType for no apparent reason.

(armor) しじんのふく (tunic) Bard's Clothes (tunic) Bard
Defense: 2, 10% evade, 1 MDef immune to Silence Used by: All but Dark Knight
(armor) けんぽうぎ (tunic) Kung Fu Suit (tunic) Karate
Defense: 5, 20% evade, 2 MDef, 1% MEvd +3 str Used by: All but Dark Knight
Belt
Defense: 10, 30% evade, 3 MDef, 2% MEvd +5 str, +5 stm Used by: All but Dark Knight
Defense: 100, 10% evade, 20 MDef, 12% MEvd +15 all stats, immune to Flame, Ice, and Thunder, immune to Poison, Darkness, Silence, Pig, Minikin, Toad, Stone, Incapacitated, Gradual Petrification, Confusion, Sleep, Paralysis, Levitation, and Curse, "immune" flag Used by: All but Dark Knight

The "immune" flag actually does turn elemental resistances into (near) immunities here, but it's still glitched and also sets base evasion rate to 99%.

Worse, the Adaman Armor apparently plays around with some extended flags, and removing it after having it equipped once makes that character very weak (4x damage taken) to both Flame and Ice (and supposedly weak to Thunder as well, but my testing doesn't support that). In short, if you manage to get one of these, equip it to someone and don't ever remove it. But why would you want to remove it?

Defense: 24, 70% evade, 15 MDef, 8% MEvd +3 agl Used by: Ninja

The EasyType renames this the にんじゃふく (Ninja Clothes) and raises the agility bonus to +5.

Other
(gauntlet) てつのこて (gauntlet) Iron Bracer (gauntlet) Iron
Defense: 2, metal   Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer, Ninja
(gauntlet) あんこくのこて (gauntlet) Bracer of Darkness (gauntlet) Shadow
Defense: 2, metal   Used by: Dark Knight
Defense: 3, metal   Used by: Dark Knight

Renamed to やみのこて ("Bracer of the Dark" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

(gauntlet) あくまのこて (gauntlet) Demon's Bracer (gauntlet) Black
Defense: 4, metal   Used by: Dark Knight
Defense: 5, 1 MDef, 1% MEvd, metal +3 spr, strong against Undead Used by: Paladin

Renamed to はがねのこて ("Steel Bracer" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Defense: 6, 2 MDef, 2% MEvd, metal strong against Spirits Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer, Ninja

Defense: 7, 3 MDef, 3% MEvd resists Thunder Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer
Defense: 10 +10 str, +10 stm, strong against Giants, immune Minikin Used by: Wyrmknight, Monk, Paladin, Engineer,
 Summoner (adult only), Ninja

Found as a rare drop from the Ogre and Berserk Ogre, and much more readily as a semi-common and semi-rare drop from the Steel Golem.

(gauntlet) げんじのこて (gauntlet) Genji's Bracer (gauntlet) Samurai
Defense: 8, 5 MDef, 3% MEvd   Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer, Ninja
Defense: 9, 6 MDef, 3% MEvd resists Flame, Ice, and Thunder, strong against Dragons Used by: Wyrmknight, Paladin, Engineer

Additional Dragon Bracers can be found as a semi-common drop from the Red Dragon monster. While Cain obviously needs only one, and Cid is long gone, Cecil might benefit from some variety in his defenses, even if the stats aren't quite as high as on the Crystal Bracer.

Defense: 10, 7 MDef, 4% MEvd +3 spr, strong against Undead Used by: Paladin

The ring icon used for the following items does not exist in the Japanese version of the game. It was added in the English version by using one of the character codes freed up by not having to support the Japanese character set, and helps compensate for how short item names were forced to be.

Defense: 2, 10% evade, 2 MDef, 1% MEvd, metal   Used by: Summoner (child or adult), Sage, Royalty,
White Mage, Monk, Black Mage, Ninja, Lunarian

In an odd reversal of its tendency to give things more Japanese names, the EasyType renames this with the borrowed English term ブレスレット ("Bracelet").

Defense: 0, 10% evade, 3 MDef, 2% MEvd immune to Pig Used by: All but Dark Knight
Defense: 4, 10% evade, 4 MDef, 4% MEvd, metal strong against Spirits Used by: Summoner (child or adult), Sage, Royalty,
White Mage, Monk, Black Mage, Ninja, Lunarian
Defense: 2, 10% evade, 2 MDef, 2% MEvd, metal +5 str Used by: Wyrmknight, Monk, Paladin, Engineer,
 Summoner (adult only), Ninja
Defense: 5, 10% evade, 8 MDef, 8% MEvd +3 int, +3 spr, strong against Mages, immune to Silence Used by: Summoner (child or adult), Sage, Royalty,
White Mage, Monk, Black Mage, Ninja, Lunarian

Renamed to まほうのうでわ ("Magic Bracelet" with purely Japanese terms) in the EasyType.

Defense: 20, 15% evade, 12 MDef, 10% MEvd +5 agl, strong against Dragons,
immune to Confusion, Sleep, and Paralysis
Used by: All but Dark Knight

Found as a rare drop from the Red Dragon monster. Especially good for Cecil and Cain, since they already have elemental resistances from their other endgame equipment; Rosa, Rydia, and Edge may prefer the Protective Ring unless they're lucky enough to have Adaman Armor.

Defense: 6, 10% evade, 8 MDef, 6% MEvd resists Thunder Used by: Summoner (child or adult), Sage, Royalty,
White Mage, Monk, Black Mage, Ninja, Lunarian
Defense: 10, 15% evade, 12 MDef, 10% MEvd +15 stm, resists Flame, Ice, and Thunder Used by: All but Dark Knight

In addition to the two in chests late in the game, more can be found as a rare drop from the Ahriman monster.

(gauntlet) のろいのゆびわ (ring) Ring of Curses (ring) Cursed
Defense: 0 -15 all stats, "absorb" flag Used by: All

When worn together with any equipment that resists any attack element, this upgrades the resistance to absorption. Useless for the Dark Knight, since although you can get one with him in your party and he can even wear it, none of his equipment has any elemental resistance.

Summary of Potential Defensive Bonuses

Keep in mind that resistance to Flame automatically brings weakness to Ice, and vice versa. When possible, it's preferable to pair both, resulting in a resistance to both types of magic (and a weakness to both in physical form, but no enemy uses elemental physical attacks; just watch out for Confused characters).

Flame: Ice Shield, Dragon Shield, Dragon Helm, Crystal Helm, (Ribbon in EasyType only), Ice Armor, Dragon Mail, Adaman Armor, Dragon Bracer, Protective Ring

Ice: Flame Shield, Dragon Shield, Dragon Helm, Crystal Helm, (Ribbon in EasyType only), Flame Mail, Dragon Mail, Adaman Armor, Dragon Bracer, Protective Ring

Thunder: Diamond Shield, Dragon Shield, Diamond Helmet, Dragon Helm, Crystal Helm, (Ribbon in EasyType only), Diamond Armor, Dragon Mail, Robe of Light, Adaman Armor, Diamond Bracer, Dragon Bracer, Diamond Bracelet, Protective Ring

Holy: (None. Since only a handful of enemies can cast Holy or Meteor, this is rarely an issue.)

Dark: (None. Since nothing except a Dark Knight sword inflicts damage of this type, resistance would be largely useless anyway.)

Projectile: (None. Since only weapons have this attack trait, this seldom makes any difference.)

Racial bonuses on armors halve attack power when a monster of that type attacks, which reduces damage by more than half.

vs. Dragons: Dragon Shield, Dragon Helm, Gold Headdress, Dragon Mail, Dragon Bracer, Crystal Ring

vs. Machines: (none)

vs. Reptiles: (none)

vs. Spirits: Mithril Shield, Mithril Helm, Mithril Armor, White Robe, Mithril Bracer, Silver Bracelet

vs. Giants: Giant's Bracer

vs. Slimes: (none)

vs. Mages: Aegis Shield, Ribbon, Rune Bracelet

vs. Undead: Shield of Light, Crystal Shield, Helmet of Light, (Crystal Helm in English and EasyType), Priest's Hat, Knight's Armor, Crystal Mail, Robe of Light, White Robe, Gauntlet, Crystal Bracer

The quantity of diamond equipment with thunder resistance presumably involves the word 金剛 (kongou), an originally Buddhist term linked to the Sanskrit "vajra" that refers to both diamond and thunderbolts (and, more generally, to indestructable materials and irresistable forces).
