This document is not intended for any commercial purpose, real or imaginary. It exists primarily out of curiosity about both the Japanese language and the changes between the Japanese and English versions of the game. If you're interested in the game, go out and buy it if you haven't already... a summary of what happens can't compare to actually playing it. A worthwhile game with an engaging plot, even if the graphics were dated even when it was released.

Recent Updates

2021-10-30: More storyline, up to drilling back out of the underground and finishing the sidequests available before getting the final mode of transportation. Added combat messages related to status effects and character commands. Finally stumbled across a term I'm actually happy with for the tiny people and related status effect. Corrected some oversights on the effectiveness of the Asura summon healing effects, mainly noting that it's far more potent than comparable white magic due to the healing not being split. Added notes on the DS version differences up to Edge joining the party.

2018-11-24: More storyline, up to getting the hook on the airship to carry the hovercraft around. I've also picked up a copy of the DS remake, and will include brief notes here and there on some of the changes. Also various other revisions.

2016-05-30: Revisions in this update include paying more attention to the tone of various characters. For example, Cecil talks in a way that's frankly a bit stuffy, while Golubaeser goes out of his way to be polite in his words even as his actions are rather less affable. I've also made reference to a few odds and ends from the Legends of Localizations analysis, as noted when they occur.

2015-03-01 - Besides more revisions with a focus on making the dialog sound more natural, I've added notes on text changes in the EasyType version, a page of monster data, and sections for the tutorial and developer rooms. There are also now notes in the item section on where to find some of the rarer equipment, and summary information on what equipment has elemental and racial bonuses.

2014-03-01 - Various minor revisions all over.

29 Apr 2012 - Changed "Fearsome Foursome" to "Elite Four" to reduce the cheese factor, changed "HP Leak" to "Slip" and "Clones" to "Decoy" in status effects, and made various other minor revisions.

27 Feb 2011 - Added more storyline.

21 Aug 2010 - Attack attributes are now color-coded. Revised text. Added an incomplete, but nevertheless interesting, statistic and damage calculator.

05 Sep 2009 - Added story up to Ordeal Mountain. Added character attribute growth data to the classes page. Also made some minor fixes.

07 Apr 2009 - Initial version. Items, skills, magic, general information.

Credit goes to Deathlike2's FF4 Algorithms FAQ as the source of most of my technical information on damage formulas, etc. Substantial amounts of other information, including character growth data and monster scripts, come from the data dumps found on a Japanese site for a program called ff_analyzer.
