Origin Town | HomeTown | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
This could just be a town called "Moto", but it can't be mere coincidence that the town the adventure proper starts in has a name meaning "origin". Ryu and Bosch stand in an office, facing an older man behind a large desk or small table. |
||||
{Bosch} 「Doyen! Please give us an assignment! We're ready for it! |
{Bow} 「Elder! Please give us work! We're full-fledged workers now! |
||
A doyen is a senior member of a group, profession, or society. I wanted something less generic than "elder" and this seems to work. |
||||
Doyen 「I know, I know. Here, have this one... |
Elder 「I know, I know Here's a job for you ‥ |
||
{Bosch} 「Hmm, what's this...? What!? "Find a pet"!? |
{Bow} 「Hum, let me see‥? What! `Find a pet'!? |
||
Doyen 「...you don't care for it? |
Elder 「‥ You don't want to do it? |
||
{Bosch} 「Of course I don't like it! It's such a lousy assignment! Besides, anyone whose pet runs off on them can't be very... |
{Bow} 「Of course I don't want to do it! A silly job like this! Beside, you've got to be pretty stupid to lose a pet‥ |
||
Just then, a young woman with purple-tinged white wings walks into the office. No, she's not Nina. |
||||
「...excuse me, master doyen? Are these the people who are going to find my pet? |
「‥ Sir? Are these the men that will find my pet? |
||
Doyen 「Ah, lady Mina... Well, they don't seem interested in... |
Elder 「Oh, Mina‥ Well, they don't seem to want the job‥ |
||
{Bosch} 「H-hold on a minute! No one ever said we wouldn't do it!! |
{Bow} 「Wait, wait a minute! Nobody said we wouldn't do it!! |
||
{Bosch} 「Lady Mina! Just leave your pet to me, {Bosch}! Mina 「Oh my, thank you. |
{Bow} 「Mina! You can leave it to me to find your pet! Mina 「Well, thank you very much |
||
{Bosch} 「So, doyen! Just leave it to us, and everything will be perfectly fine! |
{Bow} 「Elder! Leave it to us and everything will be fine! |
||
Mina 「Then please take care of things... Please find my Suzi. I shall see you later... |
Mina 「Well, I'll leave it to you then‥ Please find my Suzy. I'll be seeing you later‥ |
||
The credits give the pet's name as Suzy Q, which is believed to be a reference to musician Suzi Quatro. Mina leaves. |
||||
{Bosch} 「Just leave it to us, doyen! If it's for a girl that cute, we'd be glad to find a pet!! Doyen 「.........quite calculating of you. In any event, do your best. |
{Bow} 「Please, elder, leave it to us! We would be happy to help such a pretty girl find her pet!! Elder 「‥‥‥ You are a calculating man Well, try your best |
||
{Bosch} 「Wahoo! I'm raring to go! Let's get moving, {Ryu}! We'll ask around out in town! |
{Bow} 「Ya hoo! I'm really excited now! Let's go, {Ryu}! Let's leave this village and ask around! |
||
Let's talk to some of the other Rangers first. |
||||
「Hey, {Ryu}! Have you found anything about your father? He disappeared a long time ago, right? We'll let you know if we hear something. |
「Hi {Ryu}! Did you find out anything about your father? Didn't he disappear a long time ago? If we hear anything, we'll let you know |
||
「Rangers are like handymen... We get all kinds of jobs. But spare me the weird stuff. |
「A ranger has to do anything‥ There's all kinds of work But I don't want to do any weird stuff |
||
Sylvia 「Ranger assignments aren't all glamorous, you know. Finding a pet isn't so bad. Some people ask us for housecleaning! |
Silvia 「A ranger's job is not all cool Looking for a pet is not so bad There are people who come and ask to have their house cleaned! |
||
It seems the Rangers are basically a guild of contract workers for hire. Though interesting from a worldbuilding standpoint, that doesn't help with our mission. Mina and two white-winged guards are staying at the inn, though, so maybe they can give us a little more information. |
||||
「Suzi loves taking walks, and often wanders far away... |
「Suzy loves to take walks and she often goes far away‥ |
||
「Lady Mina comes to this town now and then... I don't know what she does, but my gut tells me that she's seeing someone. A boyfriend, maybe? Tee hee! |
「Mina comes to this village sometimes‥ But I don't know what she does here I think she comes to meet someone here Could it be a boyfriend? giggle giggle |
||
「Please locate Suzi, Lady Mina's pet... |
「Please find Mina's pet Suzy‥ |
||
That doesn't really help either. Lets ask some of the locals. |
||||
「I hear lots of monsters show up in the regions north of this town. I don't know what you're looking for, but you might not want to go north. |
「There are many monsters in the northern part of this village. I don't know what you are looking for but I suggest you don't go north |
||
「My grandpa said there was a town beyond Futabi Mountain when he was a kid. Don't know about now, though... |
「When my grandfather was a child, there was a town on the other side of Mt.Fubi. I don't know about now though‥ |
||
「Looking for something? I spotted an unfamiliar man near Futabi Mountain to the south... Does that work as a lead? |
「Are you looking for something? I saw a strange man near Mt. Fubi in the south‥ does this help you? |
||
「My kitty's been eaten! Some foul monsters have moved into Futabi Mountain, south of here. Do something, Rangers! |
「My little kitty was eaten! There is a bad monster living at Mt. Fubi in the south. Ranger, please do something! |
||
I think we know where to go now. But first, there's a dragon statue on the edge of the town... |
||||
「Oh, are there still eccentric people who would worship me? Lately, it's Evaism this and Evaism that. No one pays the Dragon God any mind. I miss the old days... Oh, sorry, sorry. Age is no excuse for grumbling. Would you tell me about your journey? |
「There are still curious people who would pray to me? Lately everybody prays to St. Eva. Nobody pays any attention to the Dragon God. It was so nice before‥ Oh, I'm sorry. When you get old, you tend to complain. Are you going to tell me the story of your journey? |
||
As in Breath of Fire I, the Dragon God statues will save the game, though they generally sit out in the open, largely ignored. And, as the Dragon God's complains hint at, the Evaist churches will also save the game, though the one in this town is currently inaccessible. While looking at the shops, I noticed another useful change in the GBA version is that items now have icons to indicate their type (helmet, armor, and so on). Especially with the dubious translation, this does a lot to help avoid confusion. Shop menus additionally display indicators when the merchandise would be stronger or weaker (based on raw attack/defense) than what a character currently has equipped. Also, when in one of the random hunting zones that may appear after battles on the world map, dashing is disabled, so it has no effect on gameplay there. That would have been easy to overlook, so count me impressed! The whole area doesn't quite fit on the screen and should perhaps have been shrunk, though. On that note, Bosch's field action uses his crossbow to hunt animals in special hunting zones that randomly appear as tufts of grass on the world map after combat. The animals tend to spook if they spot someone, though, and his firing range only slightly exceeds their awareness range. However, when firing horizonally, he can strike animals that are one tile above his line of fire, so take advantage of that. He can also shoot through rocks, but animals can't see through them. Most take two shots to finish off, and the meats they drop act as healing items and also sell for a decent amount of money. Ryu's field action, on the other hand, is fishing in special predefined fishing spots that may appear as leaping fish along shorelines on the world map after combat. He'll need to equip a rod and bait to fish. Try to cast as close to Ryu as possible to minimize the distance to to reel the fish in, thus reducing the chance of breaking the line and losing the bait for nothing. Like meat, fish tend to have healing effects, though they don't generally sell as well and are frankly more trouble. Fishing is also the first place I noticed any text changes at all in the English GBA version. They corrected "Equip lod/bait" to "Equip rod/bait". The fact that this error was ever in an English release in the first place is pretty indicative of the quality of the translation as a whole. Speaking of the world map, there's also a sideshow tent just outside of town, but it's not important yet, so we'll save that for later. |
||||
Futabi Mountain | Mt.Fubi | ||
Futabi might be 双尾, which roughly translates to "twin tails". The enemy encounter rate seems to be significantly reduced in the GBA version. That helps to offset the increased gains per battle, anyway, and makes exploring less tedious, especially when combined with the dashing ability. They were either clever with these changes or just lucked out. Soon after entering, Bosch hears someone talking... |
||||
「*whisper*... *whisper* Here come more......... {Bosch} 「.........huh? Did you say something? |
「Psst, Psst It's back again ‥‥‥ {Bow} 「‥‥‥ uh? Did you say something? |
||
After we pass through a cave with a handy healing spring, perfect for grinding out a few levels, the voices return... |
||||
「...it's our lucky day! What a looker! I'm sick of dogs and cats! |
「‥Lucky! It's handsome! I'm tired of dogs and cats! |
||
...and a few steps later... |
||||
「Okay, time to make our move!! Three, two, one, go!! |
「Well, I've got to go!! Three two one go!! |
||
A trio of harpies dramatically swoops down from the cliffs and attack! They'll focus their attacks on Ryu... |
||||
| 「I'll take the appetizing one, here! | 「I'll take the best one! | ||
| 「No fair, big sis! I want that one too! | 「No fair! I want that one! | ||
| 「Hey! Putti wants this one too! | 「No!! Pooty wants that one!! | ||
...except in the second round of combat, when they attack each other instead... |
||||
| 「You two can eat that other one! | 「You guys eat the other one! | ||
| 「Big sis, what are you doing, you dummy! | 「What are you doing, meanie! | ||
「やーん やめてー おねえさま! | 「Waaah! Cut it out, big sis! | 「Please stop, Sis! | ||
...before going back to cooperating. |
||||
「すききらい してたら ダメ! | 「It's no good being a picky eater! | 「You must eat everything!! | ||
「そうだわね! | 「That's right! | 「That's true! | ||
「なかよく たべましょー! | 「Let's all get along and eat together! | 「Let's eat without fighting! | ||
Putting Ryu in the rear of the "scramble" formation will help protect him. Fortunately, the harpies don't have all that much health. |
||||
{Bosch} 「Could it be... Suzi was... eaten by that bunch!? .........I sure hope not! Let's hurry up and find her!! |
{Bow} 「Could it be‥ that Suzy. was eaten by those guys! ‥‥‥ I hope not. We better hurry and find her!! |
||
A rock blocks the next cave... |
||||
Seems like we could move it... | I think we can move this‥ |
||
...so we push it out of the way. Unfortunately, that knocks over a much larger rock, which tumbles down the mountain and crushes the first cave entrance, startling a passing merchant fish. On the plus side, it also creates a much shorter path between the east and west sides of the mountain. |
||||
{Bosch} 「.........w-wow, this is getting out of hand. ...well, whatever! |
{Bow} 「‥‥‥, Th, this is a lot of responsibility, ‥ but I can handle it! |
||
There's a Deadly Flame (FireRock) in one chest in the cave. Hold on to that for now... Continuning, we have to hop in a hole in the floor of the cave. There's a man here who seems significant, but he's of no relevance for now. |
||||
Azusa 「I'm Azusa, a hunter. I got lost tracking game and wound up in here. |
Azusa 「My name is Azusa, and I'm a hunter. I was hunting an animal and ended up here. |
||
Later on, he'll be one of many possible villager recruits, but we'll save that for then. That's it for the mountain. Beyond lie the remains of a former village. A fishing spot north of the village has a treasure chest containing an Iron Bracelet (IronBR), but good luck fishing it up without a better rod. |
||||
Ruins | Ruins | ||
Only one house remains standing, and it's in poor repair, though at least there's a Dragon God statue next to it. As we approach the house... |
||||
「Aaaagh!! Help! {Bosch} 「What? That came from inside! |
「Woh Oh!! Help me {Bow} 「What is that? It's coming from inside! |
||
In the building, a swarm of cockroches corner an old man. |
||||
「Help! C-co... cockroaches!! {Bosch} 「Oh no!! We've gotta help him! |
「Help me! A, a‥ Cockroach!! {Bow} 「Oh no!! I must help him! |
||
The cockroches aren't strong, but they are quick, and there are a lot of them. This might sting a little. With any luck, Ryu may counterattack a few times. |
||||
「..................? Gaaah!! S-s-s-s-stay back!! |
「‥‥‥‥‥‥? Aaagh!! Don't come near me!! |
||
And a giant cockroach attacks. It's considerably tougher than the smaller ones, but there's only one of it, and it's not nearly as quick. The biggest problem is that sometimes it just refuses to die. |
||||
「ゴキブリは、しぶとくよみがえった! | 「The cockroach stubbornly revived! | 「The cockroach got up!!! | ||
Worse, it may do this repeatedly, though that typically won't happen. Regardless, it eventually stays dead. Although reminiscent of how most bosses in Breath of Fire keep fighting well after their visible health bar runs out (they actually just have more health than shown), the cockroach merely has a random chance to revive with partial health when killed. Dead bosses in this game normally just die. |
||||
「Phew, that was one huge cockroach... This old man Niro has roamed the world for many a year, but fighting cockroaches over my food is a first... |
「Wow,it sure was a big cockroach‥ I've been wandering for many years but I never had to fight for my food against a cockroach before‥ |
||
Niro 「I'd better eat up before they come back again... I was going to eat this on my own, but I'll share it with you as thanks for saving me... |
Niro 「We've got to finish eating this before they return‥ I was going to eat this all by myself but since you saved me, I'll share it with you guys‥ |
||
He pulls out a pig from somewhere. |
||||
Niro 「Looks tasty, doesn't it!? I'll let you have the legs! |
Niro 「What do you think? Doesn't it look good! I'll give you guys the leg! |
||
He sticks the pig in a pot of boiling water. |
||||
Niro 「Now, little piggy. ...let's get this collar out of the way... You'll make delicious boiled pork... |
Niro 「Now, little piggy ‥ let's take off this bothersome collar and boil you‥ |
||
{Bosch} 「By the way, old man... We're searching for a pet. Niro 「What! Are you trying to say I've eaten a dog or cat!? How rude!! I haven't, not recently!! |
{Bow} 「By the way, old man‥ We're looking for a pet. Niro 「What! Are you insinuating that I ate a dog or a cat!? How rude!! I haven't eaten one lately!! |
||
The pig is turning red... |
||||
{Bosch} 「......... Let me see that collar... {Bosch} examined the collar... it read Suzi!! |
{Bow} 「‥‥‥ Let me see that collar for a minute‥ {Bow} checks the collar Suzy is written on it!! |
||
(insert dissonant noise as Bosch reads it) |
||||
{Bosch} 「Oh no!! That pig is Suzi! That's Lady Mina's pet! |
{Bow} 「Oh no!! That pig is Suzy! It's Mina's pet! |
||
Whoops. Maybe someone should have mentioned that Suzi was a pig and not a more conventional pet. Bosch rescues her from the pot. |
||||
{Bosch} 「Phew, good thing she's not cooked yet! Niro 「...bah, such a shame. Could you at least let me chew on a leg? {Bosch} 「Not a chance! |
{Bow} 「Woh, I'm so glad we realized in time! Niro 「Darn, it's a shame Can I just have a bite of the leg? {Bow} 「Nooo! |
||
{Bosch} put the pig in his bag! {Bosch} 「...uheh heh, I bet Lady Mina will be thrilled. Maybe she'll thank me with a kiss!! |
{Bow} puts the pig in his bag! {Bow} 「Heh heh, Mina will be so happy Maybe she'll give me a kiss!! |
||
{Bosch} 「 |
{Bosch} 「Come on, let's hurry on back, partner! |
{Bow} 「Buddy, let's rush home! |
||
So it's a happy ending for Suzi, but I can't help but feel a little sorry for the old man... |
||||
「ひもじいのぉ‥ | 「I'm so hungry... | 「I'm so hungry‥ | ||
Origin Town | HomeTown | ||
Back at Ranger headquarters, we find Mina and her two winged guards already in the doyen's office. |
||||
{Bosch} 「Doyen! We have good news! We've found Suzi! |
{Bow} 「Elder! We've done it! We found Suzy! |
||
{Bosch} 「 |
{Bosch} 「Feast your eyes on this! |
{Bow} 「See, look! |
||
He puts Suzi on the table. |

Mina 「Suzi!! Suzi 「Oink, oink, oink! |
Mina 「Suzy!! Suzy 「Oink oink oink! |

Mina 「‥‥‥? Suzy is so clean‥ Did you bathe her? |

{Bosch} 「Y-yeah... s-something like that. Mina 「My, thank you so much! ...I'm glad you're here in time. |
{Bow} 「Well, ah, something like that Mina 「I thank you very much! ‥ I'm so glad you came back in time. |
||
{Bosch} 「In time for what? Doyen 「Ah, yes... Lady Mina is returning to Windia. |
{Bow} 「In time for what? Elder 「She is going back to Windia |
||
Mina 「...thank you ever so much. Please do come visit in Windia... |
Mina 「‥I really appreciate what you have done Please come and visit us in Windia‥ |
||
Mina 「Farewell, everyone... |
Mina 「Goodbye everyone‥ |
||
She leaves with her guards. |
||||
{Bosch} 「That's not how it's supposed to go! I though we'd be getting friendly! |
{Bow} 「That's not fair! I thought we could become friends! |
||
Doyen 「Oh, don't you grumble... Here, have your reward. Received 500 zeny!! |
Elder 「Don't pout‥ Here is your pay Received 500coins!! |
||
{Bosch} 「.........phew. If you think about it, no way would we be right for each other anyway! Anyway, we finished our assignment... always a good thing, right, partner? |
{Bow} 「‥‥‥ sigh‥ When you think about it, there is no way that Mina could fall for anyone like me! At least we got the work done‥ Right, Buddy! |
||
That we did. The doyen seems pleased as well. |
||||
「It may be about time to let you handle bigger assignments... |
「I think it is about time I give you a bigger job‥ |
||
Let's head home, then. |
||||
{Bosch} 「*yawn*... I'm wiped. Wanna go rest in our room? |
{Bow} 「Yawn‥ I'm tired Shall we go to our room and rest? |
|
Sounds like a plan. Let's go take a well-deserved rest. The Dragon's Tear appears here, and Bosch's Mood increases or decreases based on how much he has to nag before Ryu agrees to go to bed. However, because it was initialized back in the introduction and has been affected by dialog options then and combat since, it could conceivably be anything at this point. If combat has been going fairly well, there's even a good chance it's gone rainbow already. Not that it seems to have much of any meaningful effect. |
||||
? | {Boche} 「
{Boche} 「*yawn* .........good... night. |
{Bow} 「Umm ‥‥‥ Good‥night |
|
