The battle is much easier than before. The party has grown in strength, while the Magus was recently weakened by Lavos. If Frog is in the group, he fights alone, but even like that, it's quite winnable. Ayla can steal a Last Elixir. When fought here, the Magus is monster ID 250, and though his level, attack power, and magic power are higher than they were in his castle, he lacks the special defenses and most of the attacks he had then. Add to that how much stronger the party is likely to be now, and this battle is underwhelming, even if he does start counterattacking when his health gets low. If Frog is in the group, he holds his sword aloft. |

He now joins the group. The option to change his name exists, but he's 魔王 (or Magus in the English version) by default, even if the 魔 looks like a 广 with a マ inside it on the character screen thanks to the small font size and lack of detail. This is, incidentally, the only time you can have kanji in a character name. The naming input is limited to kana, numbers, and some basic punctuation. The Magus is clearly a powerful mage, and unsurprisingly has the highest magic points, magic power, and magic defense of any character. His physical attributes aren't bad for a sorcerer, either, with his hit points and power comparable to Frog's, though his stamina isn't much better than Marle's or Lucca's. He also has an exceptional hit rate that even surpasses Ayla's, plus an unusually high evasion that doesn't rival hers but still puts him solidly in second place in that category. Unfortunately, the only skills he has at the moment are the all-enemy lightning, ice, and fire spells, which are essentially the same as the ones Crono, Marle, and Lucca use, though with almost a third more raw power. He comes with Sara's Charm equipped, and as in the earlier battles, fights with a scythe. Appropriate to his loner attitude, he learns no cooperative techniques with anyone. His status screen holds a deep violet 冥 (Dark) in the top corner, and as is usual, he has an innate 20% resistance to the element. And as a side note, if you take the Magus to the village square, Jyaki's cat Alphard gets excited and follows him around. |

The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0xD4. Clearing the game while Crono is dead leads to one of two variants of the secondary ending "Resumption", depending on whether the Sylbird remains intact. The 黒の夢 (kuro no yume, Black Dream), as the structure is called, now appears in all time periods except for 65 million B.C., but there are more pressing concerns to attend to first. Crono, mostly. By now, you've probably noticed how useful he is to have around. No group of three can learn trio skills without a special item unless Crono is one of them. He's also the cornerstone of your Aether attack capability—without Crono, the only options are Elec Attack (the very last tech Robo gets) and ★Thundaga as cast by the Magus, neither of which allows for precision targeting. In addition to that, Crono has speed on his side and tends to match or surpass the other fighters in damage output, especially once he gets his final weapon. Besides, Marle will hate you forever unless you do something. :-P |

But first, a side trip. This is the blue pyramid north of Medina Village that looks just like the one on one of the islands in Zeal. The pendant has been able to dissolve the seal since being energized, but since the Magus can speak here, it could be a spoiler to list it earlier. Players should, of course, come here as soon as they can break the seal to get the items as early as possible, though on the other hand the flying Sylbird also makes it more convenient now. |

The Nu fades out, leaving two chests. Whichever one the party takes, both disappear in a flash of light, and the party only gets the contents of the chosen chest. The chest on the right contains the Swallow, a weapon for Crono, and the other contains a Protect Helm. No other Swallow exists anywhere, though other weapons will outclass it, and the only other Protect Helm comes from stealing from a boss at practically the end of the game. Take your pick. As you may recall, an NPC in Enharsa described this visible portion as merely the entrance to a temple where equipment forged from the planet's power was sealed. Exploration of a prerelease version of the game suggests that, at some point during development, the floor under the glowing pyramid was to rise up, revealing a sealed doorway leading into a larger area that presumably would have served as an optional dungeon. As a side note, outside of this event, all characters can win dopple-dolls of themselves, which are delivered to "home" areas for each (Marle's room in the castle, Lucca's room in her house, Promethe Dome where Robo was found, Frog's hideaway in the Frog Monster's Forest, Ayla's tent in Ioka Village, and the Northern Cape where the party encountered the Magus). Each dopple-doll cycles through a series of poses when examined, so they're good for showing off some of the character sprites. Winning the game that costs 10 silver points awards a Poyozo doll, sent to the lead character's home location. It plays music when examined, usually the character's theme music (Lucca gets "Fanfare 1", which serves as her theme though it isn't named as such, while both Crono and Marle get "Crono and Marle ~Distant Promise~"). For winning the game that costs 80 silver points, a second cat is sent to Crono's house. Winning any game after already getting its prize results in extra cat food for Crono, which can lead to even more cats, up to eleven total, including one with Alphard's coloration, though I'm not clear on exactly how the game decides when to add another one. |

The creature turns into a tree, sheltering the party from the winds that would otherwise blow them off the mountain. Past the entrance, the winds die down, and "Silent Light" plays. In addition to snow and rocky cliffs, there are, of course, monsters. Variety is minimal, with groups consisting of the Eater (Krakker) and Macabre. Frog's Demon Killer works well on the Eaters, as they're considered magical creatures, but other than that, neither enemy has any resistances or vulnerabilities. Note that the Brave Sword found here does not get this bonus, even though the English version claims it does, making it generally inferior for this area despite its higher attack power. Further in, there is a cave, and in the cave... is a pint-sized Lavos! It can dish out some serious damage (hint: leave the shell alone), but shouldn't be a real problem. There's another one one the far end of the caves. Past the second mini Lavos is a narrow ledge, and another of the strange creatures. The shell and head of Mini Lavos (Lavos Spawn) are monster ID 215 and 216, respectively. In addition to the nasty counterattack, the shell is nearly invulnerable, while the head has normal defenses. |

Finally, some historical impact! While the manifestation of the Black Dream surely wasn't the sort of effect anyone was trying to have on history, the very fact that it has appeared and persists across eras flagrantly demonstrates that the party's actions can have a lasting impact on history. After twenty three chapters of doing little more than seeing through events that would have happened anyway and not having any noticeable effect, that's significant. The question of why it manifested on this timeline but not the original one is not entirely clear, but presumably it has something to do with Sara using up her pendant's energy to send away several people who wouldn't have been there originally. Given that the pendant was lifeless when it came into Marle's possession to begin with, Sara had presumably drained it doing something else, and whatever that something else was seems to have been enough to keep the Abyssal Temple where it belonged. And then there's averting Crono's death. While it hasn't noticeably changed anything yet, as the Philosopher of Reason himself said, this couldn't have worked unless Crono's existence was truly important and necessary. What exactly that means isn't entirely clear, but it would seem to bode well for their chances of being able to stop Lavos. On a side note, that the Magus's flashback shows the three philosophers there with the queen when the disaster occurs supports my hypothesis that, as the prophet, he was responsible for imprisoning Bosch and driving the other two away, presumably into hiding. The village elder mentioned that Bosch chased after Jyaki and both were sucked into a black distortion, so it's not much of a stretch to assume that the other two philosophers also surfaced after the temple's completion and Bosch's reappearance, meeting with the same fate either way. |
