Kingdom of Magic: Zeal | The Magic Kingdom | |
---|---|---|---|
The Farthest Reaches of Time | The End of Time | ||
Now that Ayla can stay behind, here's her usual dialog: |
|||
Ayla: Ayla go. |
Ayla: Ayla go. |
|
No: |
|||
| Ayla: Take Ayla, Cro! | Ayla: Take Ayla, Crono! | |
She also fidgets. |
|||
Yes: |
|||
Ayla: Ayla go wild, make |
Ayla: Ayla fight for world! | |
In other words, she'll cause so much havoc it makes up for all the sitting around doing nothing. She cheers, and "Ayla's Theme" starts playing as the party select screen appears. |
|||
? | |||
The ground outside is covered with snow, and there seems to be a never-ending blizzard. The year display confirms that this is 12,000 B.C., much as Robo indicated. The group soon finds a strange, apparently magical, structure, marked (Road to the Sky). It houses a teleporter, which the party uses. The destination is outdoors in a seemingly tropical area. "Corridors of Time" plays, replacing the shrill wind noise. Leaving the teleporter, Crono and the others see that they're actually on a small island floating in the sky, with thick cloud cover below. There's a city nearby, and another teleporter on the other end of the island. |
|||
12,000 B.C. Enharsa | Enhasa | ||
It's a small town, but lavishly decorated. Many of the people are in beds. Among other oddities are books that produce fire, water, and wind when opened. |
|||
Welcome to Enharsa. Enharsa is the Magic Kingdom Zeal's dreaming city. We are searching for truth within the bliss of sleep. Hm...? But who are you...? |
Welcome to Enhasa, in the magical kingdom of Zeal. We find truth in the bliss of sleep. Dear me! And who might you be? |
|
There's a creature near the entrance who looks much like Gran and Leon in their true forms. |
|||
This is the eternal Magic Kingdom Zeal. The place where all desires come true... However, there's no telling how steep the price for that will end up being... |
This is the eternal kingdom of Zeal, where dreams can come true. But at what price? |
|
The creature disappears, and shows up elsewhere in the town. |
|||
The world that you see with your eyes and the world that I see with my eyes may be completely different things. Got it? There are as many universes as lives. Don't think that only the things you can see and touch are the truth. |
Am I a butterfly dreaming I'm a man... Or a bowling ball dreaming I'm a plate of sashimi? Never assume that what you see and feel is real! |
|
生命 (translated "lives") is the quality of living things that makes them living and not inanimate. She (it's apparent from how she speaks that she's socially feminine) disappears and shows up elsewhere, again. |
|||
I'm Doreen. Seek the way that was shut. Get the order correct and open the doors of knowledge. |
I'm Doreen. Seek the hidden path, and open the doors of knowledge, each in turn. |
|
(Doreen) is almost-not-quite the same as ドリーム (dream). There are other odd people and/or creatures to talk to here too. |
|||
Do you think that "fate" exists? That everything in this world is already decided in advance... What do you think? |
Do you believe in Fate? Which means our lives are all predetermined? |
|
The player gets three choices here. In order from least interesting to most... |
|||
| It's not your place to know. | I don't have time for this! | |
…………。 | ............ | ...... | |
| I think it is indeed so. | Yes, of course. | |
I see, so you too... I suppose that, in the end, you can't do any such thing as opposing fate with merely human strength... |
So! You're a believer! Yes, it is useless for us to fight destiny! |
|
| That's absolute nonsense. | No such thing as Fate. | |
| Yes, just as I thought! We go on cutting open our paths for ourselves. Are you listening? There may be a door for that purpose here as well. |
You're right! We're the masters of our own destinies! Speaking of which... I believe there may be a doorway of destiny somewhere around here! |
|
Weapons and armors brought forth from the planet's powers of Aether, Dark, Fire, and Water were since sealed in the northern temple on the queen's orders. What you can see on the northern continent is its entrance, but nobody can approach it any more. |
The Queen has sealed the Elemental Weapons in the north palace. You can see its entrance on the northern continent, but no one is allowed there. |
|
Switch to an overview of the region, which scrolls north to show the structure. It looks just like the mysterious blue pyramid north of Medina... The phrase "Elemental Weapons" is doubly incorrect in that it implies that no armor is sealed there and in that the term "elemental" in an RPG typically means inflicting (or resisting) damage of a particlular trait. The line actually indicates both weapons and armors that were born of the four elements from the planet's power, but do not necessarily embody any particular element, and when the party finally releases the seal thousands of years later, the items actually remaining are a non-elemental katana and a non-elemental helmet. On the other hand, it's also possible that the various sealed chests strewn about are supposed to have originated from the sealed temple, and many of those do have elemental armors, so perhaps it's not completely inaccurate. Elsewhere in the city, there's a boy with pale blue hair, wearing violet robes, and being followed by a pale purple cat. Rather striking to begin with, but then... |
|||
| Boy: ......... | BOY: ...... | |
Everyone except Crono speaks, in the order listed. |
|||
Lucca: Is something the matter, I wonder? |
Lucca: Hey, what's wrong? You have something to say? |
|
Marle: What's up with this kid? |
Marle: What's wrong with him? What a weird kid... |
|
| Frog: Oh, an antisocial kid. | Frog: 'Tis a sullen lad... | |
| Robo: MIGHT you have some business |
Robo: How may I help you? | |
Ayla: What wrong, you? |
Ayla: What wrong? That animal good food? |
|
| Boy: ......... | BOY: ...... | |
He walks past them with his cat, then stops and speaks without turning around. |
|||
Boy: The black wind is howling... |
BOY: The black wind howls... |
|
Both speak again, in this order this time. |
|||
Robo: C-can this BE true? |
Robo: Is, is it true? |
|
Lucca: H-hey! |
H, hey! |
|
Marle: Wh-what's with that!? |
Marle: What?! |
|
Frog: Hey, kid! |
Frog: Urchin! |
|
| Ayla: ???? | Ayla: ??? | |
The boy and his cat leave, with no further words. The black wind howling, though... someone else has spoken of such a thing... |
|||
And again, with yet another ordering. |
|||
Robo: THAT boy, WHY say |
Robo: Why did he say such a thing? | |
Marle: Crono... |
Marle: Crono... |
|
Frog: I don't know what it is, |
Frog: I knoweth not what this |
|
Lucca: A bad-natured joke. |
Lucca: It's only a bad joke. It's unscientific. |
|
Ayla: That runt weird... |
Ayla: Strange one... |
|
The party leaves the town and takes the other teleporter. It leads to another frozen continent on the ground, which has another teleporter. This one leads to the central and largest aerial island. Water flows down a small mountain to form a lake, and another city and an airport of sorts are nearby. |
|||
黒鳥号 12,000 B.C. The Blackbird | Blackbird | ||
This is the airport. "Zeal Palace" plays. Two odd-looking guards stand at the end of the dock, by the plane. |
|||
| What do you guys want!? | Who're you guys?! | |
A man approaches. His most notable feature is the oversized orange cape that he wears. |
|||
| How's the Blackbird's condition? | Everything okay with the Blackbird? | |
| Soldier: No anomalies, Dalton, sir! | SOLDIER: Everything's A-okay, Sir Dalton! |
|
Dalton: Naturally; if there were something |
DALTON: Of course it is, you idiot! |
|
On second thought, his most notable feature is his baseless sense of self-importance. He approaches Crono and the others. |
|||
Dalton: Hm? Those outfits... |
DALTON: Aha...it was true then...! |
|
Dalton is hoping to use them against the Prophet, not... well, honestly, I can't figure out what the NA version sounds like it's trying to say. Dalton leaves. |
|||
| The Blackbird, here, symbolizes Zeal's civilization. | The Blackbird's a symbol of how advanced Zeal's culture is. |
|
It's completely unbelievable to you guys that such a huge thing flies, right? |
Never thought somethin' so big could fly, huh? |
|
Okay, enough of that... |
|||
12,000 B.C. Kajarl | Kajar | ||
It looks much like Enharsa, but with fewer beds and a more hi-tech-ish color scheme. There's another set of the fire, water, and wind books here, but let's talk to the natives. |
|||
Hm? Your power would seem to have a slightly different feel to it than that of we People of the Light. What could it be...? I sense a mysterious kindness. |
Your power differs from ours... In you I sense a strange aura of...kindness... |
|
Apparently, if you were to combine the Solar Stone with the Prismatic Shell said to have existed in the Primeval era, you could make magnificent weapons and items. But these days, the Philosopher of Life is the only one with that kind of skill... Besides, there's also Queen Zeal's order to abandon the planet's power... |
Combine the ancient Rainbow Shell and the Sun Stone to create incredible weapons and items. But now, only the Guru of Life has the skill. Elemental power usage is forbidden. |
|
What you can see on the small southern continent is the former Solar Temple. We had enshrined the Solar Stone that stored up the planet's power there... But ever since a new energy came into use, it's been completely closed off. The northern shrine is the same way. It's said we don't need any such thing as the old planet energy any more. |
That's the Sun Keep you see on the southern continent. A Sun Stone, once the source of this world's power, was kept there. But when we began using our new energy source, it was sealed up just like the north palace. They claim we don't need the energy of this tired, old planet. |
|
A brief cutscene of the region scrolls southwest to show what he was talking about. It's an odd-looking but unfamiliar structure. |
|||
Here in Zeal we have the three esteemed Philosophers of Life, of Time, and of Reason. None can match them in wisdom or skill. |
The Gurus of Life, Time, and Reason, live in Zeal. Their skill and knowledge is supreme. |
|
I've heard rumors that a mysterious prophet appeared at the palace. I don't know the details, but I've heard he possesses amazing magical powers. |
I heard a strange prophet has come to the palace. I don't know the details...but I heard he has uncanny powers. |
|
Queen Zeal has two children, lady Sara and lord Jyaki. Lady Sara is a magnificent girl. She possesses amazing magical powers far beyond those of the average person. With that much power, she's sure to have a rosy life ahead of her... |
Queen Zeal has two heirs, Schala and Janus. Schala's an incredible child who has extraordinary magical powers. Being so gifted, she'll breeze through life. |
|
This is just a rumor, but they say that lady Sara's magical powers far surpass even those of her mother the queen. Her brother lord Jyaki, on the other hand... Despite his royal blood, he doesn't seem to have any magical powers whatsoever. |
I heard Schala's powers far exceed those of her mother. Then there's her step-brother, Janus. He's of royal blood, but he doesn't seem to have a speck of magic. |
|
There's no indication that Jyaki is Sara's step-brother, here or anywhere else in the game. His name is pronounced something like "jockey" or "Jackie", but more importantly, it's a homonym for 邪気 (jaki), which roughly translates to "malice", "toxic gas", or "evil aura". |
|||
It's quite unusual how often we've been seeing lord Jyaki recently. He always seems to be ill at ease and out walking around... |
We've been seeing a lot of Janus lately. He appears upset and paces around. |
|
He hardly ever talks to anyone but his older sister lady Sara and that cat he always walks around with... Who can say what lord Jyaki might be seeing or hearing...? |
His only friend, other than his sister, is that stupid cat. What tempest rages in his head? |
|
Visible in the depths of the central ocean is the Abyssal Temple, proof of her majesty's greatness. The Abyssal Temple will be the source of the radiance to guide all life. Oh, how great you are, Queen Zeal! |
The Ocean Palace lies deep beneath the waves. It's a symbol of the Queen's power! The Palace is the source of light which sustains all living things. Queen Zeal, the great! |
|
Literally, the "Ocean Floor Temple". Aside from being more compact and poetic, "Abyssal" carries an appropriately sinister connotation. |
|||
Many People of the Earth are assigned to temple construction on the ocean floor. Even that sort of people are useful at times. |
The Earthbound Ones are being allowed to work on the construction of the Palace. So they do have a purpose after all. |
|
Water calls wind... Wind makes fire dance... |
Water summons wind... ...wind makes fire dance. |
|
That sounds like it might have something to do with those books. Sure enough, open them in the order water, wind, fire, and a bookcase slides into the floor, revealing a hidden room. There's a book in the corner, statues around the room, and a some sort of doll in the middle. |
|||
Eons ago, mankind's ancestors happened to take hold of a mysterious fragment of red rock... Everything started from that point. Power surpassing human knowledge fostered dreams and gave birth to love and hate... What manner of ending will it see...? Perhaps only time knows the answer. |
It all began aeons ago, when man's ancestors picked up a shard of a strange red rock... Its power, which was beyond human comprehension, cultivated dreams... In turn, love and hate were born... Only time will see how it all ends. |
|
I don't think it's saying that people didn't have love, hate, or dreams before contact with this mysterious rock, as I've seen some claim. Rather, the power that it brought became a focal point and inspiration for all three. Crono takes a closer look at the doll. |
|||
Found something peculiar !! Just then, a Black Rock came out from inside! |
You've found something strange! But a "Black Rock" is inside! |
|
With little else to do here, the party heads up the mountain, passing through a series of teleporters. |
|||
ジール宮殿 12,000 B.C. Zeal Palace | Zeal Palace | ||
The decor doesn't look any different from the other towns, but the music... "Zeal Palace" is a slow, ominous tune. |
|||
This is her royal majesty's palace. The heart of our Zeal Kingdom... which of course is another way of saying it's the heart of the universe. |
The is the Queen's Palace, the center of Zeal Kingdom. Which makes THIS, the center of the universe. |
|
Arrogant, much? Anyhow, Gran and Leon are standing around inside the castle too, in their goblin-like forms. As usual, Gran spins around once each time he speaks, and Leon does two little hops every time he speaks, though their neckbands aren't different colors this time. |
|||
Wonder what he's up to, old man Philosopher of Life... He hasn't been around lately. That's the trouble with humans... |
I wonder how ol' man Melchior is... Humans are so odd... |
|
Spoiler tags added, since you're not meant to discover the Philosopher of Life's name until meeting him face-to-face. |
|||
Gran, big brother, I wanna be the wind... |
I wanna be the wind, Masa! | |
Yeah, you'll be able to. Some day, for sure... |
Oh, you will some day. | |
Big sis Doreen went to have fun at Enharsa again. |
Big sister Doreen's at Enhasa again | |
Yeah... It's 'cause sis likes dreams. |
Yeah... That's 'cause she likes dreams. |
|
I like the wind better. whooshwhoooosh! |
I like the wind better! Whoosh! |
|
Elsewhere, a woman stands by a sapling. |
|||
| Do you like greenery, travelers? | Visitors, do you like plants? | |
Sure, why not? |
|||
Well! I also like plants very much! But her royal majesty said to burn up this sapling that I received from the Philosopher of Life... And yet the Philosopher called it a mysterious sapling with the power to protect greenery... Ahh, what should I do? |
Oh, you're just like me! But the Queen ordered me to burn this sapling I received from the Guru of Life. He said it was a magical sapling, with powers to cure the environment. What shall I do? |
|
The preferable option is: |
|||
Plant it somewhere secretly | Secretly plant it. | |
You're right! Even with orders from her majesty, how could I possibly burn up what I received from the Philosopher...? I understand. I will plant this sapling somewhere with care. It may someday be of use to someone protecting greenery. |
You're right! Even if it IS the Queen's command, the Guru of Life gave it to me. I can't burn it... I'm going to grow it with love. Someday it may save the environment. |
|
The Subterranean Desert in A.D. 600 and the entire forest sidequest become available as soon as you tell her to plant the seedling. |
|||
A few more random people... |
|||
That man wandered into the palace just recently and won the queen's trust with his reliable predictions. Nobody knows where the guy came from. He's not one of we People of the Light, and of course he couldn't be of the People of the Earth... Hmmm... |
That man's a newcomer but his accurate prophecies earned the Queen's trust. He's a drifter... He's not one of us Enlightened Ones, nor of the Earthbound Ones either. Hmmmm... |
|
Previously, the queen's right-hand man lord Dalton managed the Abyssal Temple project entirely, but now, the traveling prophet is advancing the plans. You'll have to make sure not to get too close to lord Dalton for a while. He's really ticked off. |
The Queen's aide, Dalton, was in charge of the Ocean Palace, until some traveling prophet took over. He's in a bad mood so you should avoid him. |
|
When we complete the Abyssal Temple, our Zeal Kingdom will be enveloped in eternal light... There will no longer be either fear or sadness there. Only endless tranquility awaits us. |
The completion of the Ocean Palace will allow Zeal to last forever! And there will be no fear or sadness, just eternal peace. |
|
Listen well, the earth is alive. Over long periods of time, it gradually moves... Plains to mountains... mountains to oceans... After many thousands, tens of thousands of years pass, ways may be found to places where none can now approach, such as the sealed northern shrine and the Solar Temple. |
The Earth is alive, and it has changed over the aeons. From flat lands into mountains... From mountains into oceans... You may find THE WAY... That is, if you could pass aeons of time at the forbidden palace, or the Sun Keep. |
|
Lord Hasch, the Philosopher of Time, is quietly continuing his research into time on a small island somewhere, it's said. He's making an "Egg of Time", or something... However, it has been many years now since anyone has seen him... |
They say that Gaspar, the Guru of Time continues his work on some deserted island. He's making a "Chrono Trigger" or "Time Egg," or something. But no one has seen him for ages. |
|
The whereabouts of lord Gasch, the Philosopher of Reason, who designed the Blackbird and Abyssal Temple, are also unknown. Who could have expected that all three of the Philosophers who guided Zeal Kingdom would disappear at once...? |
Even Belthasar is gone, after designing the Blackbird and the Ocean Palace. How strange that the 3 Gurus who guild Zeal have all disappeared. |
|
THIS is the source of Zeal's power. The Nether Relic extracts and amplifies the great Lavos's limitless energy. |
THIS is the source of Zeal's strength. The Mammon Machine...it draws and magnifies the infinite power of Lavos. |
|
In order to control the Nether Relic, you need magic power strong enough to regulate the energy it draws out. The only one besides the Three Philosophers who can manage it any more is lady Sara. |
Magic strong enough to control the extraction of energy, is needed to control the Mammon Machine. |
|
The Three Philosophers created this Nether Relic from the red stone passed down in the royal family. The Philosopher of Life, who was the leader of the project, researched various things concerning the great Lavos. And then... |
The 3 Gurus made the Mammon Machine from the royal family's red rock. Melchior, who has studied much about Lavos, was in change of the plans. But then he disappeared... |
|
There's that name again... there's a reason the Philosopher of Life is, in the original, never referred to by name until later on, though I understand the translation was done without any useful context. Also, there's nothing here about him disappearing. It sounds more like the "and then" after his research is simply that they came up with this device, though a mysterious disappearance is also a possibility. |
|||
Ever since one of the Philosophers, the Philosopher of Life, opposed the queen's plans, he hasn't been seen... You don't suppose...? |
Melchior, who opposed the Queen's plans, has vanished. You're not thinking what I am, are you? |
|
Now we have a mention of his disappearance. And that name yet again... |
|||
Since the Nether Relic was completed, the queen has grown cold, like a different person. Just between you and me, rumor has it that not just the People of the Earth, but even the People of the Light are mercilessly eliminated if they oppose her... |
When the Mammon Machine was completed, the Queen changed almost over night. Just between us, I heard that ANYONE who opposes her, and not just the Earthbound Ones, vanishes. |
|
All this is rather disturbing, especially the talk of Lavos energy... Elsewhere, there's a Nu walking around funny. |
|||
My back... Scritch-scratch a bit? Yaay, yippie. Yeah... There, there... Ahhhh...! Phew... Thanks... |
Could you... Scratch my back? Umm! Thanks! Uhh... You got it... Phew... Phew... Thank you! |

Over in the living quarters, the party finds the eerie blue-haired boy, with his cat following as always. The boy is talking to a young woman with similar, but longer, pale blue hair, and matching violet robes. (Sara's Theme) plays. |
|||
| : Elder sister! | Schala!! | |
姉上 (ane ue) is a respectful and somewhat dated way of saying "big sister". |
|||
: Ah, welcome back. |
Oh, you're back Janus! Is something wrong? |
|
| Jyaki: The black wind... | JANUS: The black wind... | |
Sara: You feel it, the ominous aura...? |
SCHALA: You feel it too? |
|
She hands him something shiny. |
|||
| Jyaki: This...? | JANUS: What is it? | |
Sara: It's a charm. |
SCHALA: It's a kind of amulet. |
|
Jyaki: That bitch isn't our mother! |
JANUS: She's NOT our mother! |
|
| Please excuse me, lady Sara. | Excuse me, Highness. | |
A woman walks into the room. |
|||
Her majesty the queen calls. She would like to have you descend to the Abyssal Temple immediately. |
The Queen asks for your immediate presence at the Ocean Palace. |
|
Sara: ...understood. |
SCHALA: All right. |
|
She notices Crono and the others. |
|||
| Sara: Oh... |
SCHALA: Oh! |
|
| Lady Sara, please hurry. If we are late, then her majesty will... |
Miss Schala, please hurry. If you're late, I'll be punished! |
|
Vague unspecified bad consequences for the servant. |
|||
| Sara: Yes. I'm sorry. | SCHALA: Oh yes, I'm sorry. | |
Sara and the woman leave. Crono tries talking to Jyaki. |
|||
Jyaki: ......... |
JANUS: ...... |
|
So he tries the cat. |
|||
Jyaki: It's useless. |
JANUS: Don't waste your time. |
|
The party follows Sara. She heads down the central hallway, to the sealed door. The door reacts and phases out in response to her pendant, then closes up again after she passes through. The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0xA2. Leaving to go clear the game at this point—before advancing the plotline any further—leads to the elusive alternate ending "Review Meeting?" The party tries using Marle's pendant, but nothing happens. |
|||
Everyone but Crono speaks, in this order: |
|||
Marle: Huh? |
Marle: Hmm... |
|
| Ayla: Mysterious. Why? | Ayla: Strange. |
|
Robo: The door HAS a powerful |
Robo: This door has a strong |
|
Lucca: Hmmm... |
Lucca: Hmm... |
|
Frog: Dammit, who'd have guessed |
Frog: 'Tis a mere DOOR that keeps |
|
The saying 手も足も出ない (te mo ashi mo denai) refers to a complete inability to do anything about a situation. Frog throws ベロ (BERO, tongue), in with 手 (te, hand), and 足 (ashi, foot), to make a bit of frog-themed wordplay. |
|||
Crono tries going around and talking to people. |
|||
This sealed door will not open from outside, unless you have a powerful spellbreaking key, such as lady Sara's pendant. Oh, that pendant...? It looks just like lady Sara's. I have heard that whenever lady Sara prays to the Nether Relic, her pendant emits a mysterious radiance... |
To open the door from outside, an item like Schala's pendant is needed to break the seal. Y...your pendant!! It looks just like Schala's! I heard that when Schala communes with the Mammon Machine, her pendant starts to glow. |
|
Crono tries using the pendant with the device, and the pendant seems to absorb energy. The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0xA5. The alternate ending "Review Meeting?" is no longer available after this, as guards blocking the city exit make the final boss inaccessible for now. Meanwhile, in the Modern Age, a barricade now blocks off the clearing with the Gate in Guardia Forest, leaving the Gate itself the only way to get there. |
|||
Oh, that radiance...!? That is without a doubt what the Philosophers made for lady Sara!! Why do you...!? |
That glow...?! That's the pendant the Gurus made for Schala!! How did you get it?! |
|
Now, Marle's pendant glows when held up to the door, which opens in response. |
|||
More talking that depends on who's here... |
|||
| Marle: Yaaay, it opened, it opened! | Marle: Yea, we did it! | |
Lucca: Hu, hu, hu... |
Lucca: Heh, heh... Even a door of this caliber can't keep science at bay! |
|
Ayla: Ayla go! |
Ayla: Ayla go! |
|
Frog: Now then, will we wind up |
Frog: What doth challenge us |
|
Frog's line is a saying that basically means there's no telling what comes next. That, and frogs don't get along with snakes. |
|||
Robo: Marle's pendant IS the |
Robo: There is no doubt. |
|
You know, that thing alchemists thought could turn base metals into gold, create an elixir of life, and probably do everything else imaginable for good measure. The connection to the Three Philosophers of Zeal would have inspired the comparison, but it's mostly the alchemical miraculous meaning that's relevant. |
|||
And so, they pass through the doorway and into the throne room. A woman wearing an overly garish outfit sits on the throne. Sara, Dalton, and a man wearing a black hood and cloak stand facing her. |
|||
Queen: Who are you!? |
QUEEN: Who are you!? |
|
Sara, Dalton, and the other man turn to face the intruders. The black-cloaked man looks strangely familiar, but he turns back around almost immediately. |
|||
Prophet: Queen... |
PROPHET: Your majesty... |
|
Queen: What!? You foreigners. |
QUEEN: How DARE you think you could |
|
Dalton: Yes, ma'am! |
Dalton: Yes ma'am! |
|
Dalton gestures, and he, Sara, the prophet, and the queen disappear. A portal opens in the middle of the room, and a grotesque creature with really big teeth comes out. It's time for a boss battle! The Dalton Golem (Golem) copies attack types, which means it uses skills of a given trait after being hit with that element, and physical attacks after being hit with anything else. When copying physical, it also mentions that this is its strongest mode. This is a difficult battle to win, but that's fine because the game continues even on a loss. Of course, it's best to try winning since the Golem does give experience, tech points, and money. I suggest bringing Lucca and Marle, with everyone in the party equipped with the flame-resistant Ruby Vests. Have Marle use Haste and heal as needed, while Crono and Lucca use Fire Sword to inflict damage and force the golem to use only fire attacks. On the other hand, if you bring Ayla, she can steal a Magic Capsule (note that this will put it in physical mode, as will anything you do to it that isn't an elemental attack, so have a different trait ready to follow up). After some investigation, I've verified that the golem's wait time resets when it changes modes. This means that if you keep hitting it with different attack types and never leave it set to any one for too long, it won't be able to do anything until it dies. The timing is trickier, but it works wonders. Either way, keep your health up, because it does a final attack when beaten (unless it dies on a counter attack). |
|||
If you do win, there's a little extra dialog... |
|||
Dalton: My golem...! |
DALTON: My poor Golem! |
|
He does some kind of magicky thing and locks them in a stasis field or something similar. From here on, the only difference is that they're locked in the field instead of laying on the floor knocked out. |
|||
Queen: Hu hu hu... |
QUEEN: Mwa, ha, ha... |
|
The queen uses an unusual pronoun for herself, わらわ (warawa). The associated kanji, 妾, literally means "concubine", though it's simply a humble (inappropriate as that may be) way to say "I". The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0xA8. Scene change to another room, where Crono and the others are now floating captive in an beam of energy. "Sara's Theme" plays, and Sara, Jyaki, and Alphard the cat walk into the room. |
|||
Jyaki: Hmph, idiots... |
JANUS: Hmph! |
|
| Sara: I shall assist these people. | SCHALA: Let us rescue them. | |
Jyaki: I think it's pointless, though... |
JANUS: I think it's useless. |
|
Sara: I'll be fine... |
SCHALA: Don't worry about me. The just might be able to rescue the Gurus. |
|
Sara does something to the controls, and Crono and the others float to the ground. |
|||
Sara: Are you all right? |
SCHALA: Are you all right? Quickly, escape from the palace! And if you can, please rescue Melchior! He was sent to the Mountain of Woe for opposing the Queen. Please! You have to help him! |
|
| : I will not allow that... | I'm afraid I can't allow that... | |
"Zeal Palace" starts playing, and the prophet walks into the room. |
|||
Prophet: I won't let you all hinder |
PROPHET: Your meddling tires me. You'll...just have to disappear! |
|
| Sara: No! | SCHALA: You mustn't! | |
| Prophet: ...! | PROPHET: ......! | |
| Jyaki: Stop! | JANUS: Stop! | |
Alphard meows at him too. After a pause... |
|||
Prophet: ...hmph. |
PROPHET: Okay...I'll spare them. |
|
Prophet: Now, if I could have |
PROPHET: Now, show me how you came |
|
Scene change to the cave where Crono and the others arrived. The party enters, followed by the prophet. |
|||
| Prophet: Oh? From such a place... | PROPHET: Hmm...so you came in through |
|
Sara finally enters as well. |
|||
Prophet: Now, Sara... |
PROPHET: Now Schala! |
|
| Sara: N-no! | SCHALA: N, no! |
|
Prophet: If you do not do as I say, |
PROPHET: Obey me! |
|
| Sara: ...I understand. | SCHALA: I...oh, all right... | |
Crono and the others pass through the Gate, and Sara puts a barrier over it. It looks a lot like the blue pyramid north of Medina, but it's smaller and pink. The prophet walks out of the cave, and Sara falls to her knees. |
|||
| Sara: Forgive me. | SCHALA: Please forgive me... | |
ティラン城跡 65 million B.C. Tyran Castle Ruins | Lair Ruins | ||
The Gate opens where it always did, and an identical barrier appears on this end as soon as it closes. |
|||
The first of the characters listed below who is in the active party will speak. |
|||
Marle: I wonder why that prophet |
Marle: Why did the prophet let us go? |
|
Lucca: That prophet should have been |
Lucca: The Prophet could have just done away with us. |
|
Robo: WHY did he not eliminate US? | Robo: Why would the Prophet spare us? |
|
Frog: That prophet let us off with our |
Frog: 'Tis true, he hath spared us. But something is amiss. |
|
The other non-Crono character responds. |
|||
Ayla: They were sucking |
Ayla: They take energy from Lavos. Lavos not get weak? |
|
Frog: And another thing, just what |
Frog: Where hast Magus gone? I shan't allow him to get away. |
|
Robo: HOWEVER, it IS an era that |
Robo: The key to defeating Lavos must exist in that era. |
|
Lucca: But it seems like that era |
Lucca: The key to defeating Lavos must exist in that period. |
|
These lines are in the game data, but I can't get them to display. |
|||
Marle: But we can't return to that |
Marle: But we can't get back to that time. What can we do? |
|
Lucca: But that era's Gate |
Lucca: But the Gate to that time was been sealed. Is there another way back? |
|
Robo: HOWEVER, the Gate has |
Robo: But the Gate has been shut. | |
Frog: But that Sara girl sealed |
Frog: Yet Schala hast sealed the Gate. 'Tis not possible to returneth. |
|
Ayla: But Aylas no can go there |
Ayla: Door gone. No can return. |
|
The character who spoke first continues... |
|||
Marle: Come to think of it, I feel like I've |
Marle: Wait a minute. I've seen the design on the doors this pendant opens, somewhere else... |
|
Lucca: !! Haven't we seen the crest on the door |
Lucca: The crest on those sealed doors... We've seen it elsewhere, haven't we?! |
|
Robo: CONCERNING the crest on the door |
Robo: Wait. The crest on the doors that the pendant opens... I have seen them in my own time! |
|
Frog: Come to think of it, the crested door |
Frog: Thou hast seen elsewhere the crest on the doors that the pendant opens, correct? |
|
Cut away briefly, panning by the Watcher's Dome in the ruined future, then inside and up to a very similar door, then the usual message about it not opening. |
|||
...and continues some more. |
|||
| Marle: Let's try going, Crono! | Marle: Let's check it out, Crono! | |
Lucca: We might be able to get our |
Lucca: We may yet find our way back to that era! Let's get cracking, Crono! |
|
Robo: LET US try going. |
Robo: Let us return to my time! | |
Frog: Guess there's no choice |
Frog: 'Tis time to depart, eh, Crono?! |
|
The internal storyline progression tracking variable is now 0xAB, starting the next chapter. All party members are at 1 HP if they lost the Golem battle, and unchanged from then otherwise. Fortunately, the Pteran are still waiting outside the ruins. As before visiting Zeal Palace, clearing the game at this point leads to the alternate ending "What the Prophet Seeks..." |
|||
Honestly, most of what the party did in this chapter basically amounts to tourism, but without leaving a mess behind. Charging the pendant will be important, but doesn't affect history directly. Confronting the leaders might have made a difference, except that it resulted in being summarily ejected from the time period before having a chance to make any historical impact. |
