Let's do some looking around.

That could come in handy. The chest containing the spell sits at the end of a secret passage that should be obvious even without the Thief's skill.

A moogle runs around upstairs among the less remarkable human-type people.

They find Karulu on the roof, tending to the wyvern, which doesn't look very energetic.

Everyone looks downcast, but then Butz perks up.

ケルブ (KERUBU) appears to be a Japanese rendition of the word that English normally spells "cherub". However, as kahran042 points out, here it's far more likely to be a rendition of the Arabic word for "dog", romanized "kelb".

Let's keep exploring the castle first, though.

This castle continues in what seems like a tradition of castles having mysterious basements. As promised, the door there won't open.

If you like, you can fight Statues (せきぞう) down there. They're tough but slow, die easily to Level 5 Death or the Gold Needle item, and make a good source of job experience. Stealing can rarely yield a Twin Lancer, though you'll mostly just get High Potions.

You can also learn Death Claw from them if you haven't gotten it yet. You'll need to !Control one, and also give it a little bit more MP to enable the skill.

Anyway, back to exploring...

Probably got eaten by a Sand Crawler. What were they looking for, though...?

The castle has shops and an inn as well, though none sell anything new except the Gauntlet, and it's unclear why Galuf should have to pay for supplies and especially lodging in his own castle. Regardless, searching the roof of the main shop area turns up a hidden second stairway down. The chest has an Angel's Raiment, and going through the wall, where it has a switch, to reach the shop counter results in a silly little scene.

Butz waves his arms. The actual merchants are not amused.

Despite their polite tone, the way they throw him against the wall seems a bit over the top. One of them has second thoughts about it, though.

The pond in the southwest corner of the courtyard has a hidden current leading to the moat. Hiding in the corner all the way around the castle...

The switch next to where the current led in the first place sucks the party back inside.

Talking to the soldiers guarding the gate, once ready to leave the castle, starts a scene.

Last chance to back out. When ready, the soldiers escort the party out instead of doing the sensible thing and staying inside.

The soldiers return inside and shut the gates.

Although three monsters approach on the map screen, only one, a different variety of Abductor, appears in combat. Death Claw in Blue Magic will take care of it quickly, but the monster is nothing special and shouldn't be too much trouble regardless.

This Abductor may use Bloodsuck (33% chance every second turn), for what it's worth.

The village lies a short distance to the north. Oddly, there's no one outside, not counting the sheep.

Most of the buildings are locked. So is the gate.

Based on Google results, Kelger is a Japanese trade name for terbinafine hydrochloride, an antifungal medication also known by the trade name Lamisil. I'm not convinced this is truly relevant, but it's all I have to go on.

One house seems to be Kelger's, but there's no one in the common room, and the inner door is locked. The party starts to leave, but...

Werewolves drop from the ceiling and burst through the outside door, surrounding them.

A more distinctive werewolf enters from the inner door.

Galuf nods, then approaches Kelger.

Butz is unamused and confronts him.

Kelger knocks him aside, continuing to stare down Butz.

Lenna and Faris move to flank him, but Butz won't have any of that.

The others move to the side as Butz and Kelger face off in the center of the room. Kelger dodges away as Butz makes the first move.

Kelger flickers, then begins spiraling around Butz too quickly to see and getting in some cheap hits. However... Butz seems to close his eyes and concentrate, allowing him to locate Kelger...

...and quickly strike, knocking him through the door deeper into the house. Galuf reacts disapprovingly.

As the others head to the back, Butz just scratches his head.

After a scene change, Kelger lies in bed, with Butz and Galuf next to him, while Lenna and Faris wait at a nearby table.

The Dolgans are an ethnic group that mostly live in northern Russia, for what it's worth.

Kelger and Galuf react with shock. Lenna and Faris turn to see what's going on.

Galuf nods.

Since the new name doesn't have any obvious significance, I'll just stick with the most straightforward romanization.

A flashback begins. Galuf, Kelgar, and two others stand in a cave, facing Exdeath, who lies on the ground.

Exdeath flashes and flickers.

Galuf, Kelger, and Zeza step forward and raise their arms. Dolgan, though, hesitates, then turns away.

Dolgan clearly doesn't like this, but finally he gives in and raises his arm with the others. The cave shudders, and a hole opens beneath Exdeath. Outside, lights swirl around the forest. Then, back in the cave, the ground seals shut, taking Exdeath with it.

The following pair of lines seems to go unused.

The scene fades out.

Fade in to see Kelger, Galuf, and Zeza standing by the warp tile of a meteorite, while Dolgan has started up the stairs to leave.

Dolgan begins to leave, and with one last look back...

...exits. Galuf takes a few steps forward.

The flashback ends.

The party reforms, but Kelger remains in bed.

The equipment shop stocks some new options, and the magic shop has level 4 spells again, for anyone who missed any before.

A trio of werewolves run in circles in one corner of the village. One has something useful.

Requiem will inflict substantial damage on all Undead monsters in combat. Bring a Minstrel, or the !Sing command, wherever many of them appear.

The werewolf by the well mentions something odd...

...so we'll try checking the well itself.

As Butz stands scratching his head, an old man hops out of the well!

The frog monster Colnago (コルナゴ) often appears nearby, especially in the forests. Catching one with the Beast Tamer's skill (though they tend to flee when low on health; Death Claw helps with that) and bringing it to the man gets a response.

Colnago can also use Frog Song, on its own (33% chance every other turn) or when controlled.

Equipping that helps while catching monsters, allowing the skill to work once they're under half health instead of needing to bring them under one eighth.

There's not much else to do here. One villager in the inn will treat the party to a meal and provide some complimentary supplies, but each time that happens, one of the sheep outside disappears... oh, dear. Naturally, this becomes unavailable once no sheep remain.

Drippy (ドリッピー) is the first non-boss monster with Magic Hammer, and may use it when under !Control, or with 33% chance every second turn.

In this area, an unidentified rock monster has a tendency to appear, take a swing, and then immediately flee before the party can react. While moderately annoying, it shouldn't cause much real harm. Eventually, it will appear with two Undead dragons, which soon turn against it. Killing off the dragons (that new song works wonders) leads to a brief scene.

Similar to Ramuh, Golem drops an item to learn the corresponding Summon magic.

What look like dragon bones litter one screen. That's rather ominous. However, searching them turns up the Bonemail, which has high defense, but gives the wearer the drawbacks (though also some of the advantages) of being Undead.

One cave seems to have a dead end, with a sealed door and a switch out of reach, but we can just walk around to find a weak spot in the floor and fall through to another section of the same cave. The door opens from this side, while the switch creates an extra path outside.

The Kazekiri Blade and Hypno Crown in the next cave are well worth collecting. After saving, going outside, and continuing on, we find a familiar plant.

The two of them approach it. Unfortunately, it lunges up out of the ground, moving far more than any plant ought to.

They collapse, so Butz grabs Faris while Galuf grabs Lenna, then carry them to a safe distance.

Boss battle! The Wyvernweed keeps producing flowers with attacks that, though otherwise weak, cause a wide variety of status ailments. Summoning Golem blocks them, and their low attack power means that should last for quite some time. Most status effects also work on them, so the Love Song or Tempting Song, for example, will shut them down temporarily. The Wyvernweed itself has a lot of health, but lacks any protection against percentile damage like Gravity, Missle, and, most of all, Death Claw. If that connects, one more hit will finish it off. None of the enemies have anything to steal.

The plant goes back to being just a plant.

He hops into the moat.

The others join him. Faris goes first, while Butz shows the most reluctance. Regardless, remember the secret tunnel between the moat and the pond inside? Galuf evidently does. We circle around behind the castle and hit the switch. The soldiers are appropriately humbled.

However, on the way to the wyvern, a woman rushes out of Karulu's room and stops them.

The party follows her into the room, where Karulu lies in bed.

As far as I can tell, that's from the French word "guide", which means basically the same thing as "guide" in English but has a different pronunciation. I decided to go with a name I've seen elsewhere that matches the pronunciation, though perhaps reminding people of a certain greedy merchant might not be the best choice.

Everyone nods to each other. Now for that wyvern... Lenna leads the others onto the landing.

The wyvern just shakes its head.

Lenna considers, then nods.

This time, the wyvern eats, and recovers immediately.

Lenna, however, collapses.

Then Karulu rushes out.

I hate trying to translate family terms when not used for actual family. They always seem to come out too awkward, too standoffish (like "ma'am" or "miss" here would), or, if you go the more literal route, too much like unrelated characters are related. Often the easiest thing to do is pretend they were speaking English all along and just use names, assuming the context allows it.

Lenna recovers.

Lenna just nods.

That way she collapses says otherwise.

They all get on the wyvern, Lenna giving Karulu a parting look. Karulu waves as they fly off...
