Matango Kingdom | MATANGO |
---|---|---|
Mushrooms, mushrooms, everywhere! Not only do mushrooms cover much of the ground, but the residents themselves appear to be mushrooms as well, resembling the common Myconid enemies, but with more intelligence and less aggression. The regular version of "Dancing Beasts" plays in town. |
||
: We Matangoans live in peace, unlike the savage Myconids. |
Unlike others of our kind, we're peaceful! |
: Matango! This is a word for greetings! |
We say "MATANGO" to greet each other! |
: Ognatam! This is a word for farewells! |
"GONTMA" means goodbye! |
It's literally just the same word with the characters reversed. That should at the very least be "GONTAMA". |
||
: As you can see, we are a weak people. We stand no chance of being able to fight the monsters living in the northern cave. |
We aren't equipped to fight monsters. |
: The forest has been in an uproar lately. Could it be a portent of ill to come? |
The forest has become a dangerous place... |
: This is Mush Castle, home to our King Truffaut! |
This is Fung Castle, home of King Truffle. |
Well, the mushroom people have been friendly enough so far. Wtih any luck, their king might help us out. But first, let's visit the item shop to buy some new armor. Watts has somehow beaten us here, too, and he's chatting up one of the locals. |
||
: I've been hearing a lot about all of you from this person. |
This man's told me allabout you. |
Oops. I think that sentence was expected to have an automatic line break sooner than it actually does. |
||
Watts: Took you long enough! I figured you'd come here, so I've been waiting. |
WATTS:Whew! I thought you'd already left! |
On to the throne room! |
||
Oh, what a surprise! They're supposed to be extinct, but I saw a white dragon in the mountain cave! It's true!! |
I saw a white dragon! They're supposed to be extinct! |
: You probably know the legend of the battle between the Mana Fortress and Divine Beast that engulfed the world in flames...... : They don't seem to be the same as the Divine Beast, but our world has long had creatures called beasts of the gods. : Sometimes there are these nonsensical dark things flying in the middle of the forest and such, right? That's them. |
Legend has it that a Mana Beast took on the Fortress. Animals similar to Mana beasts live in our world! Sometimes you see them flying through the woods. |
: It seems that our ancestors once had command of creatures that let them freely fly through the skies. : They were supposed to have been white dragon-like creatures, but they're believed to have gone extinct by now. : However! One of our people saw such a white dragon in the cave to the north yesterday! |
Our ancestors once rode flying animals. White dragons, I believe! Amazingly, a white dragon was spotted yesterday in a cave to the north! |
Chancellor: King Truffaut is doing a fine job of succeeding our dearly departed previous king. : However, King Truffaut's tendency to act before he thinks causes us no end of trouble. |
NOBLEMAN:King Truffle is a splendid ruler! However, he's reckless! |
King Truffaut must be the one with a chair who wears a crown and sports a remarkable moustache. |
||
Truffaut: You're finally here! The legendary heroes! I've been waiting! [BOY]『?? : Hu hu, it's no use playing dumb! Our country has legends, too, you know! Listen...... |
TRUFFLE:Here at last! The legendary knight! [BOY]:..? TRUFFLE:You don't think we have legends here like everywhere else?! |
"Angel's Fear" plays as the legend appears one line at a time. |
||
......when disaster befalleth the white divine servants, a hero bearing the Holy Sword shall appear and save the country...... |
Riding a white dragon, and wielding The Sword, they shall save the world... |
"Dancing Beasts" resumes as he continues. |
||
: See!? That's you, isn't it? Now, now, don't be shy! I can tell, you see! : Just yesterday, one of my people saw a white dragon and giant snake fighting in the cave to the north! : The prediction is right on the mark! Go on, now, out the right-hand exit on the first floor and to the cave! : Temple? I know about it, but in our legend, the hero goes to the cave first, understand? : I'll tell you how to reach the temple afterwards. Go on, hurry! : Oh, yes, the legends say to let the hero open the treasure chest upstairs when he comes. Go open it! |
TRUFFLE:That's you guys, right? I knew it right away! Just yesterday one of my people saw a white dragon fighting a huge snake! Use the 1st floor exit on the right for the cave. Palace? I know where it is, but first find the cave! Then I'll tell you how to reach the palace! Oh, and there's something upstairs for you! |
He may be a bit pushy, but it's nice that someone finally takes us seriously, even if he is a mushroom. I'm not sure how the topic turned to temples, though, since we came here looking for dragons, and no one has said anything about there being a temple around here. Regardless, let's get that chest... |
||
| Javelin's power up! | Got Javelin's Orb! |
Nice. Next to Watts, then on to the cave! We have to pass through a mushroom field with forest creatures along the way, though. |
||
Cave North of Matango | ||
"The Boy Heads for the Wilds" plays in the cave. Numerous Molebears, Blood Owls, and Garashas appear, along with a few Sahagins. Enemies that are out of weapon reach but can still use magic may cause problems. The cave system has a few visible stairways that remain forever out of reach, even after solving all the tricks and traps. Were they always just there for decoration, or were the caves once meant to have further passages to explore? Perhaps they would have opened up later on in the storyline. After hitting a few blocked paths and dead ends, we come across a crystal orb. This one responds to Earthquake (Earth Slide). |
||
It sounds like rock collapsed somewhere... | Heard the sound of falling rock somewhere... |
That breaks some stalagmites on the floor below, opening a new pathway that soon leads to a mushroom field where "Crisis" plays. There's that giant snake they were talking about! The Great Boa (Great Viper) may attack with Diamond Missle (Gem Missile), but that's the least of our worries. Its sinuous movement makes it difficult to strike or avoid, and its attacks may cause Munchkin status, causing the damage to rack up even faster, especially combined with a tendency to stun lock characters. Keep a safe distance, aim for the head, and, of course, use plenty of magic, specifically Jinn's attack spells. The Girl may also be able to use her enemy-targeted spells to help pin it down, though only for the duration of the spell animations, and she'll more likely have her hands full with healing anyway. The Great Boa explodes differently from most bosses, bursting in segments from head to tail. |
||
| Sword's power up! | Got Sword's Orb! |
Let's keep going. We pass through another cave, without any more monsters, before coming to a larger cavern with beams of light shining in. A strange creature stands here. It does look dragonlike and mostly white, but it's hardly any bigger than the boy is. |
||
| 『This is the legendary white dragon? | THIS is the legendary white dragon? |
It makes an interesting noise, and "Soul of the Night" starts playing. |
||
......oh, that monster before must have gotten the parents...... |
Its parents must have been beaten by that serpent... |
It makes its noise twice more. |
||
[GIRL]『He'll die if we just leave him here! Let's take him with us!! |
[GIRL]:It won't make it if we leave it here. |
『...but, child or not, he's just too big for that to work out. Let's try talking it over with Truffaut. |
It's way too big for us to carry! Let's ask Truffle. |
The dragon makes its noise twice more, and the scene fades out... |
||
Matango Kingdom | MATANGO |
...and we return to the throne room. The dragon sits next to the king now. "Soul of the Night" continues playing. |
||
Truffaut: I see...... We didn't make it in time...... Very well! I shall look after him! |
TRUFFLE:He'll only slow you down...so I'll raise him! |
They did say he tended to act before thinking. The chancellor steps up to protest... |
||
Chancellor: K-King Truffaut! Truffaut: Silence! I've made up my mind! Understand!? |
NOBLEMAN:K...King Truffle! TRUFFLE:QUIET, you! |
...but quickly gives up and returns to his place. |
||
: You have other things to do, I'm sure. Now, go on your journey and leave the rest to me! Sorry for holding you up! |
You three get going. I'll take good care of him! |
: Do come see how he's doing from time to time, though. How's Flammie for a name? |
By the way, how do you like the name "Flammie?" |
( やだ いいよ ) | ( No way All right ) | (Ugh! Not bad!) |
It looks like an ordinary prompt, but the cursor never appears, and after a moment... |
||
Truffaut: Just a moment! : ......I was a fool to have asked! I would never simply back down if you were to say you didn't like it. |
TRUFFLE:Hang on..! I sound like an idiot! You'd agree with me whether you liked the name or not! |
: And so, Flammie it is! Good name, isn't it? Ha, ha, ha! |
So let's call him "Flammie" and be done with it! |
: It seems the cannoneer in the forest to the south is back. Kakkara Desert is where they say the Fire Temple is. |
Cannon Travel is open again in the forest to the south. |
Exploring more of the forest earlier would have revealed a temporarily closed cannon station just southeast of Matango. |
||
: If it's temples you're looking for, I think that's the closest one? Do your best! I'm cheering you on! |
You'll find the Fire Palace somewhere in the Desert of Kakkara. |
Well, yes, we are looking for temples, but I still don't recall mentioning that to him. Oh well. |
||
Chancellor: You surely are the legendary heroes! |
NOBLEMAN:You ARE the knight! |
: That giant snake, the Great Boa, is actually how our last king, Matsuketan... Now he is avenged at last. *sob*... |
A vile serpent took our last king. |
Ah, so there was a personal aspect to this mission, too. Interesting. We have business with a cannoneer, though. Thanks to kahran042 for catching my initial spelling error and for noticing out that マツケタ is an anagram of マツタケ (matsutake), a type of mushroom. |
||
Upper Lands (Great Forest) | Upper Land (Great Forest) |
As promised, the cannoneer has returned. |
||
: Gu shi shi, welcome, yo! Where to? Any one's 50 Rukh! ( Kakkara Desert Ice Country ) |
Slap me 50 GP and I'll send ya flying! (Kakkara Ice Country) |
Well, the temple is supposed to be in the desert, so let's head there. Though note that we could tackle the Ice Country first, and unsurprisingly end up needing to go both places regardless. |
||
: The desert... w-well, I'm not too sure about that... but I guess it should be okay? |
All the way to the desert, huh? Well... let's try it. |
That... does not sound promising... |
